Hi all. My brother just gave me Mastodon's "Crack the Skye" and I really, really like it. I only enjoy certain heavy music like this-Tool for example. What really impressed me was the complexity and actual melodies, not growling vocals.

Not being familiar with music like this, I'd love some suggestions for other music that is similar-heavy, yet melodic and complex. Look forward to all your suggestions!! Thanks! Smile

Have u checked out ISIS, they have heavy vocals sometimes but their brand of heavy music is like no other. I never thought metal  could be so epic!

Start with the album Oceanic, if your interested.

Try to dig into Mastodon some more. Their earlier albums are better in my opinion. Leviathan and Blood Mountain are great albums.

Thanks. I will check out Isis. I have a copy of Blood Mountain, but wasn't as excited by it, but I'll definitely give it another listen.

Well Mastodon themselves would probably state The Melvins and Neurosis as their two biggest influences, so those two are clearly worth investigating. Mastodon seem to border on post-metal at times so there are a lot of bands in that genre that may interest you. The aforementioned Isis and Neurosis, but also Cult of Luna, Minsk, A Storm of Light, and many others. Titan have their moments as well.

But honestly I think that Crack the Skye is rather unique in it's sort of nauseous and psychedelic atmosphere.

I've been really into Amia Venera Landscape. It's like Mastodon, Isis and some hardcore and ambient influences all mashed together. Their new album The Long Procession is amazing.

Agreed. I liked Crack the Skye at first, but Mastodons earlier albums are much better.
