I don't watch much myself. What I've seen of Curb is really great.

I love the Office and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

I like oldies;  Twilight Zone, Honeymooners, Wild Wild West, Days & Nights of Molly Dodd, Star Trek, Fawlty Towers.   For newer stuff, Slings&Arrows was good, and pretty much anything on BBC (Ramsey's F-Word, Top Gear, etc.)

Currently enthrawled by The Killing (a Danish crime series called Forbrydelsen in Danish) being shown on BBC4 at the moment. Apparently it's being remade in "American" by Fox - let's hope they do it justice.

I'm a bit of a TV geek (especially when it comes to comedy) so I shan't even attempt a comprehensive list, but in recent years I've been especially enjoying the following:

Mad Men
The IT Crowd
Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!
The Venture Bros.
Limmy's Show! (A new series starts this week! Huzzah!)
Doctor Who
Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe/Newswipe
Community
Life on Mars (UK version, not the sh*tty US remake)
Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle
Battlestar Galactica
The Trip

I've doubtless left out a load of gpod stuff but that's off the top of my head.

As for Curb... meh. I watched the entire first season but the situations seemed SO contrived. It would work if it was a heightened farcical show like Fawlty Towers but the "naturalistic" direction and acting makes it all the more unbelievable. I just couldn't get into it at all.

If you don't like Doctor Who or Top Gear than BBC America sucks.  They don't show any classic British comedies and don't even offer Monty Python on their OnDemand anymore.

I don't watch much TV, but when I do I try to find the following shows:

- Dr. House (love it, seen all seasons, and watching the new one)
- Burn Notice (fun action series)
- Seinfield
- Whitest Kids U Know (hillarious, though sometimes way too much)
- The Mighty Boosh
- Law & Order (SVU or normal, but the latter has already finished)
- Family Guy

Maybe I'm missing one or two, but that's mainly it.

House for having Jennifer Morrison. Big smile  Burn Notice for being fun even though the premise is implausible.  Plus I like a chick character that loves weapons and blowing up things.  I find that very sexy.  My wife got me hooked on Law And Order, that and Angie Harmon being on the first series.  On the funny end: Boondocks and Robot Chicken.  I've been watching Bill Maher since he was on Comedy Central and still like him.  Speaking of political humor I've been watching Jon Stewart since he was on this thing as a host called Short Attention Span Theater.

House MD, Lie To Me*, Bones, Chuck and Leverage. I try and keep up with the series's and really like to watch them in the right flippin' order, though Sky Broadcastings scheduling (some mystical process involving an Ouija board, an incomplete pack of Tarot cards, half a jar of bat's eyes, the ground-up bones of a dodo that has been blessed by the Pope and a silver nickle cast by the light of a blue moon by a one-eyed virgin wearing a pair of shoes made from the hide of a unicorn) makes that nigh-on impossible.

It's a campy superhero show, but it manages to come off as convincing and most importantly, fun.

I couldn't really get into Curb Your Enthusiasm, it was too dry and slow for the eventual payoffs. It would be hilarious if I were around Larry David acting like that in real life...but I'm watching it on TV.

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION: The American Office is vastly superior to the UK Office. Well, the US Office isn't so great these days, but in the middle of its run, when it grew out of being a clone of the UK and before it turned into live action cartoon. I like British humor generally, but it's just ugh. Part of it, I admit, is my intrinsic American impossibility to find straight-faced ironic racism funny.

I don't feel like posting a list, but I wanted to plug It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on Hulu if you guys aren't watching it already. It's pretty much the only show I still follow, now that House has turned to crap.

I don't care for either version and Ricky Gervais just isn't funny and never was, even on the 11 O'Clock Show. Humour of embarrassment just isn't amusing to me - it's the whole I-know-that-he-knows-that-I-know-that-he-knows-that-I-know he's being ironic routine that I simply can't be arsed to buy into - too much effort for such little gain.

Pretty much this, though "comedy of embarrassment" when done right (i.e. I'm Alan Partridge, Peep Show, etc.) can be great. There's nothing controversial about preferring the US Office to the original UK series though; a lot of British comedy fans are of similar mind. The critics shriek and squawk away about how brilliant and revolutionary and game-changing The Office was but such opinions really don't stand up to scrutiny.

I think with The Office it needed to be remade for the American audience for it to work over there - that the remake worked over here was incidental. Other TV shows that have been remade (in either direction) have tended to be hit or miss: Till Death Do Us Part (UK) vs All In The Family (US) - hit; She's The Boss (US) vs. The Upper Hand (UK) - hit; Coupling (UK) vs Coupling (US) - miss; That 70s Show (US) vs Days Like These (UK) - miss...

I tend to watch most TV shows on DVD, so I can get through a season in a week if I choose. My top shows would be:

Battlestar Galactica (best series ever made IMO)
Alias (still the best thing JJ Abrams has ever done)
Stargate SG-1 (at least for the first 6/7 seasons)
Rome
Band of Brothers
The Pacific
Top Gear
Prison Break
Dexter

I cant wait for the new HBO series A Game of Thrones to start, I expect it'll join the list.

I really enjoyed Rome though it didn't seem right that all the actors had British accents.  I guess it's always possible that the Romans actually had British accents and gave it to the Britons.

Would you rather they all spoke in false Italian accents? We don't exactly know what a "Latin" accent is so it made sense for the actors to speak in their native accents and just concentrate on delivering decent performances. It was a joint HBO/BBC production filmed in the UK so really the British accents were inevitable.

As for the UK v US Coupling thing, it was bound to be a flop. Coupling was an unashamed attempt at a British answer to Friends, so it was hardly filling a void...

I've rarely watched dramatic TV series >> especially those where you couldn't miss an episode or you'd be lost... and when I did watch "serious series", I prefered the french series

Always preferred the  comedies in the US tv

throughout the years:

WKRP in Cincinati
Sanford & Son....

big big big time gap.....

Married With Children ,
then Ali McBeal (at first only... it quickly got boooooring) ... ,
Sex And the City (most men would be well advised to take a few tips from that series)
and lately Californication  >> it's got me cracking up everytimeStarStarStarStarStar

Mentions to Friends & Seinfeld

But I'm definitely not a big TV watcher

let's just stay above the moral melee

content to be a doer

Seriously adult comedy especially the last 5 minutes on the last show shown here - who would thought the actress who plays Brian Aldridge's step daughter Debbie in the Archers, would be getting down dirty with Matt Diblanc of Friends..................................

No. I do own a physical TV set to watch DVDs. I do not have any type of cable hook-up or antenna is what I meant. Thank God I have a wife who feels the same way.

I only watch TV shows on DVD... currently I am going through Lost (no spoilers please :P) and the 1950's version of Robin Hood. Other shows I have on DVD that I watch every now and again include Futurama, Scrubs, and Meerkat Manor.

When we have TV, the wife and I like watching Holmes Inspection. But that only happens when the cable company gives it to us for free.

wouldn't Rome have inducted Britons into their ranks?  I always assumed that's largely why English actors can play Romans legitimately

So I've heard. I very much intend to watch it at some point but it is a massive time investment, hence not getting round to it yet.

I'm similarly dismayed at the lack of love for Mad Men round these parts. It's not quite as perfect as many of its fans would claim, but at its best it is miles ahead of the competition.

Stargate SG-1 (at least for the first 6/7 seasons)
Rome
Band of Brothers
The Pacific
Top Gear
Prison Break
Dexter

I cant wait for the new HBO series A Game of Thrones to start, I expect it'll join the list.

If it had been American accents it would have been awful. And as it is a British programme partly who else would they pick? Damn us Brits for picking British actors in British shows.

Limmy's Show, one of the best BBC sketch shows in years is back again, and as usual they refuse to transmit it "south of the border" because us poor southern softies surely can't comprehend a man talking with a mild Glaswegian accent! My favourite TV serie has to be Red Dwarf. I don't know how well know the serie is elsewhere, but here in Finland no one knows it. I've understood it was pretty popular in UK though. For those who don't know Red Dwarf, it's a scifi comedy serie about a guy who is put into suspended animation on the mining ship Red Dwarf in deep space. The entire other crew is wiped out in an accident. The guy is released stasis some millions. His only companions are the ship's senile computer, a hologram of his dead bunk mate and a lifeform who evolved from the ship's cat. Later they're accompanied by a droid. It sounds completely ridiculous, but the show is filled with great little jokes.

Other favourite of mine is Cold Feet

The "English" spoken during the time of the Roman occupation would hardly be recognizable to the modern ear, so I'm not sure if British actors enhance the authenticity. But I agree that the casting was appropriate. Ever hear of a little affair called I Claudius? You might like it if you like Rome. I count British actors among the world's finest.

Hey a Red Dwarf fan _ I just watched the DVD Back to Earth today and loved it. I missed the laughing with the live audience as it made it less humorous without the spontaneity of the characters reacting to the laughter. Lister was excellent on this and I liked the scene where Kryten walks in with Mexican hat, and of course that Russian hologram. Kochanski was a surprise element and I thought it had a nice twist. Rimmer was very funny as usual. A great series! The Blade Runner homages were wonderful and the effects are way better than the series ever was.

This is one of the best sketches from Germany's best comedian, Loriot (he is the wine merchant), with the unforgettable Evelyn Hamann, his congenial female partner in many sketches. It is funny even if you don't understand German, but if you do it is even better of course. Full of sexual undertones, and the slogan for the combination of vacuum cleaner and drying hood, the Heinzelmann, has become a dictum in German.

You'll be happy to know that they are making 2 new series(Series 10&11) of Red Dwarf, and series 10 is actually in production right now.Me and my wife adore RD but couldn't stand the Back to Earth specials. While they really upped the production values there was just something lacking.

Favorite series of the show would be series 5 for me.It's a very consistent season and has two of my favorite episodes(Quarantine & Back to Reality).

Big Red Dwarf fan here - just a little sceptical of this news; whilst I'd love to see new episodes, I wonder if it was a little 'of its time' & wouldn't translate too well after such a break

Any series which comes up with classic scenes like this:

Deserves to be remembered with affection - I hope it's not remembered as "well it used to be really good"

Hmm, there are those (ie me) who think it passed it's sell by date after Rob Grant quit and Series 7 was one series too many. Not that there was anything wrong or bad about the last two and a mini series - the writing and acting was as goos as it ever was, it just wasn't "Red Dwarf".

Oddly No. I mean I remember the programs, and James Burke presenting them, but could not for the life of me recall what they were about. I know they were bloody facinating at the time and "required viewing", but I had to reach for Wikipedia to "remember" what them. Ouch
