This idea came to me when I saw those Mikael Akerfeldt vs. Jon Anderson vs. Mike Oldfield polls and I don't know if this poll is done before but I felt obligated to make this because they are my favourite musicians and vocalists having quite a varied range. But please after voting make your comments about the reasons of your choice and their positive and negative sides. Oh...oh dear! This is tricky! As a vocalist I think Devin Townsend definitely wins. Mikael Åkerfeldt can do two things with his voice pretty well, whereas Devin Townsend's voice is much more versatile, I think. As guitarists...I'm not entirely sure, they are very different in style, and it depends on mood, I think. As song-writers...this is very difficult! Again, very different to each other, and both mighty fine. So Townsend is more varied, but I love Åkerfeldt...I'm sorry, this was a rather inconclusive post! -------------

Well Devin has a unique vocal range from operatic singing to screaming, from clean to brutal etc. He is an incredible vocalist! But on the otherside Mikael Akerfeldt can load so much meaning and passion to his both clean vocal and growls. I don't know I guess this post is really inconslusive.

Harsh vocals - Mikael hands down
Smooth, pretty vocals - Mikael
All other clean vocals - Devin
Guitar - Even
Keys, layering, orchestration, technical music stuff - Devin hands down
Pure songwriting - Close, slight edge Devin
Stage persona - Devin
Very very close, but overall originality wins this one. Opeth evolved pre-existing forms into something more than they were. Devin pretty much wrote his own blueprint from the beginning.
Devy by a nose.
Mikael is singing on the new Devy disc, so you can have your cake and eat it too...a little. ------------- You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all. |

Very tough call. Both are very good songwriters. Both are good guitarists. Both are diverse and capable singers. Both are good frontment. Both have a cool sense of humour. But because Opeth are closer to my heart than SYL or The Devin Townsend Project, I have to say Mikafeld.

\m/ Heavy Devy \m/, with a slight preference ... I like Opeth a lot, but Devin Townsend also manages to regularly put a grin on my face, he does not take himself too seriosly all the time, while Opeth sounds pretty serious to me all the time, thats why Heavy Devy gets my vote. |

| Really tough one. I like both of them so much, and their styles are so different that it is very hard to compare them. I really had to think about this one but it's Devin by a nose mostly because I am usually more excited to hear new stuff from Devin than I am to hear new stuff from Mikael. But that may be just because Devin teases us with little snippets in his YouTube posts. Anyway, my vote went to Devin. |

IMO Townsend is the greatest living vocalist. Åkerfeldt's growl is not from this world, but he doesn't really compare to Devy, who basicly does almost any vocal style better than almost anyone. It's difficult to say who is the better guitarist. Again, I think both are incredible, but their styles are so different that I can't really decide. Both are great composers, but I feel that Townsend is more diverse as a writer. And I just adore his humour! In addition to everything, Devin is one of my favorites at the electrics. Mikael tonally has both a better screaming style, and a better clean voice (only marginally), but Devin has much more diversity in his style, and he feel is a better song composer. As has already been said, it's really hard to compare their two guitar styles. The Dev by a hair.

Can't say I agree with this statement. Mike's signature sound is extremely recognizable and has been a huge influence on modern metal. With that said, I prefer Dev's sound, especially his atmospheric side.

| Like apple and oranges. Townsend can´t growl like Åkerfeldt, and even more so will Åkerfeldt never be able to reach the high pitched screeches of Devin. Two extremes sorta, look up on youtube (mikael akerfeldt teaching the crowd) and listen to the fluidity of his growling technique, sounds like something coming from a 1000 ibs lion. Aswell look up Townsends live performences of "Deadhead" it´s not something you can teach, the "will you save me" part is sickening, he does it to perfection all the time! Musically Townsend have the egde imo cause he´s sorta more independent and versitile, love Opeth and Devin/SYL allmost equal thou, depends. |

Awesome poll - a tough choice indeed. I think others before me have gone over the strengths of both chaps really well. How to split two of my favs?
For me I had to look at my collection - I own more Opeth, but something about Devy's range and humour almost tipped the scales.

Two greats! That being said Mikael is still the clear winner for me. Devy has produced some great stuff, but also some that wasn't so great. That's normal and he has a good discog but Mikael has 8 albums that are 4 stars or higher, and another that was decent enough... Also Opeth's actual music is just superb. |

This was a good poll idea; I can tell because its being cut so evenly. Devin Townsend though; I care less and less about Mikael Akerfeldt as the years go by, at least Devin keeps trying to reinvent himself.

Hey guys, this actually my first post on here... So rock on! I came across this thread while searching for some Devin Townsend forums, as I just got Addicted and Ziltoid in the mail today and am totally buzzing on some DT/DTP at the moment. This is definitely an interesting poll.. Pretty tough to choose an outright winner when they both have written music that redefined prog metal, and have certainly had a huge impact on my world throughout the years. I think right now Devin has more momentum going than Michael does with Opeth. *Artistic/Creative momentum; Not commercial success momentum* Maybe that's a more productive debate? |

Devy has some really inconsistent output, and his production sometimes really takes me out of his work. Mikael is pretty golden(outside of Storm Corrosion), so I gotta go for Mikael
