Definitely my favourite is "A Plauge of Lighthouse Keepers" with so many beautiful melodies and motives. No. 2 is "Pioneers Over C.", and no. 3 "Man-Erg".

PS. I discovered VDGG about a year ago (I'm a young prog fan). The first song I heard was Firebrand, demo - 1minute version with an awful quality, but after first 5 seconds I had a feeling of assurance that it would be a great band. Strange, don't you think? Have you heard that demo - necessarily demo (!), not the full song which appeared on the first album. This is the link: http://www.vandergraafgenerator.co.uk/mp3.htm
Tell me what do you think about it.

Just today (in the real world no less) I was swearing to someone who just heard VDGG for the first time ever that Refugees is clearly the best VDGG song and that as great as the rest of the material could be, the band could never touch that moment of true blue perfection ... looks like I'm the only one who feel that way ...  ... which is good of course

1. Refugees

2. House With No Door
3. Sleepwalkers
4. Emperor In His War Room
5. A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers
6. Out Of My Book
7. Man Erg
8. Arrow
9. Killer
10. The Undercover Man

Meurglys III, Killer, Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, House with no Door.

Apart from those, VDGG is one of the few bands where I can treat all their songs pretty much equally, and thats equally well.

A Louse is Not a Home- Peter Hamill (basically VDGG, has most of the members)

The Emperor in his War Room

Killers

Modern- Peter Hamill

Forsaken Gardens - Peter Hamill

I haven't yet heard "A Plague of the Lighthouse Keepers", but I should be getting Pawn Hearts very soon.

"WONDERING"

Whenever I'm in a rut I just need to listen to Peter singing along with the regal chord progression of this song to pull me out of it.  The song works more magic than any self-motivation speaker on Earth.  I must triumphantly pump my fist in the air while listening to this hymn.  If you've never heard this tune, download the MP3 from this great website and be prepared to conquer your conquests.

"I will arise...Survive"

'Still Life' the vocal dexterity alone wins it for me.Any would be singers should try and wrap their larynxes around this.

Honorable mention: Nutter Alert!

I love Meurglys, especially the last few minutes of jamming. Hammill plays such a weird guitar there.

Meurglys III is a great tune( although I love the beginning and wouldn't mind seeing the last 3-4 minutes chopped off, but hey...at least we agree about it being a good tune. )and World Record is truly under-rated. It is probably the heaviest of VdGG's material...even more so than Godbluff.
