Subject: Help Me Pick My Next Marathon
Date Posted: March 11 2011 at 16:28

I recently copied my entire collection to an external hard drive to use during the day at work and have been listening to bands in marathon fashion.  I've recently listened to Rush, Yes, Lana Lane, and Van Halen.  I don't know who I want to have a marathon for next.  My next marathon will start on Monday, so please let me know who I should listen to next.

Had to go for Pain of Salvation. Marillion and PT in a close second place.

Then name of the band I voted for is Talking Heads.  ZZ Top would be a good choice, too.

Recommending U2 here, assuming you have the majority of their albums because it would be interesting to hear them evolve, devolve, and evolve again as a band.  Really, though, it's whatever you will be in the mood for Monday morning.

Epignonsis: Nice message.  That bass is just over the top!

Has to be Vanden Plas ... Something about their new one that instantly put it in my top 3 of all time, but I can't work out why, and no one else thinks it's a masterpiece... Odd.

Good list, lots to choose from.

I voted for Primus. Also, if you have Les' solo stuff and FFFB add it to the marathon. It's all good.

CCBBoBB?  I believe it's commonly abbreviated as C2B3, you got an extra B somewhere.

A Who marathon would be nice, I haven't listened to them in a long while. One of my first musical loves.

It's very interesting and entertaining to listen full discographies of many of 70s bands because you see how they evolved in so many ways and mature. You really don't see much of that in the 90s and 00s bands.

Primus. Caught them at a festival just the other day and they were as good as ever. Even prompted me to take my bass of it's stand for the first time in ages.

If you listen to the while working it has to be 'light' enough, so I suggest Marillion.
Queen are light but a marathon would include too many rubbish stuff.

You know, a I've read a lot of people bemoaning the music experience changing from one where you have to physically put on an album and sit down and listen to it, but it's way cool to be able run a 'thon without having to do so, to be able to shuffle through your whole collection.  At first I thought the whole "mp3" thing was just going to be a novelty for me.  A way to take a bunch of music on vacation instead of having to spend way too much time picking things to take with me on CD.  Having access to my entire collection while away from it is a beautiful thing.  Anyway, I am the current lone Umphrey voter.  Plenty of good stuff, unknowns, and unfamiliars in your list.

I'm not familiar with the band Marathon, but reading their bio, they sound like a band that I would enjoy.

I am always lugging a case of CDs around with me wherever I go, but I find myself listening to the iPod, or now just the computer more and more.  Since I am at work much of the time, I lose out on the dynamics of playing at at home on the stereo as loud as I like, but it is still an enjoyable experience to be able to work while I am listening to music that I enjoy.

John Zorn.
His discography is huge, so it would make you busy for a while.

Honestly, based on what bands youve marathon-ed already, I am going to say Umphrey's McGee is the best choice. They also have a lot of material, so you shouldn't run out of things to listen to. May I ask what you have by them?

Dont marathon Porcupine Tree... You might kill yourself Wink

I have UM's last 5 studio albums and one live concert.  I don't have their first studio album, which they ironically call Greatest Hits Volume 3.  And I like most Porcupine Tree, although I find some of their earlier stuff somewhat boring.

that first release was never officially released. There's only something like 1000 copies out there, i think. So basically you have all their studio albums (all the songs on GHvol3 are better live anyway, especially since there was only one guitarist at the time of recording. Also some of the songs are on The Bottom Half)

You need more shows. Live At The Murat is their only official live album, so i believe there are some overdubs, but it sounds fantastic! but i have 4 live shows besides that, and man, they dont need overdubs, it's so good.

i like PT too, i was just joking. Though a marathon (chronologically) might feel weird, as they changed their sound dramatically. I personally can only listen to one of their albums (older or newer) and be done. I dont think I'd enjoy a marathon of their music.

The live album that I have is Live At The Fox Theater from March 29th, 2003.  I get weekly emails from them for their website where they sell download versions of every single one of their concerts.  I've not downloaded any yet, but I am tempted to do this one of these days.

I find ambient music to be extremely boring, and that is what I am referring to.  Stuff like Voyager and Metanoia are just awful.

I have never ran a Marathon before, but I just finished a 15K.  Of the bands listed above the one that would help me jog/run the best would likely be Talking Heads, or possibly ZZTop.

Wait...  lemme re-read the original post again... Ermm

no, no, and have not heard the other 3.  I've only heard really small doses of Steve Roach and Brian Eno, but both left me waiting for them to be over so I could move on to something more lively.

And it appears that I will be listening to Porcupine Tree's discography, or at least most of it as there are one or two albums that I don't have from earlier on.
