Trespass for me, Animals has a mediocre second side.

Animals by a very long way. Accomplished, assured, angry. Trespass.....a band trying to find its way but not there yet.

I don't really understand the reasoning for this comparison.

Both are decent albums, but neither are even close to the best works by the respective bands. I think out of these two, Trespass is the better one.

My opinion = Genesis' weakest (post Gabriel not included) vs  Pink Floyd's best.
No contest !

Both are masterpieces, but indeed very, very different.

Not only different in sound/style, but in maturity.

Trespass shows Genesis as a recently born band, not perfect at all in many aspects, but that innocency makes this album what it is, a masterful set of folky inspired tunes with great though simple interludes and solos, plus top-notch vocals and lyrics by Peter.

Animals shows Pink Floyd as an already matured band, compositions are very strong and so is the playing. Mind-blowing solos and moods, daring atmposphere and lyrics, all in all making a very dark though "excellently" executed album with some of the band's greatest moments (Dogs).

No vote.

Dogs is a masterpiece due to Dave Gilmour's contribution, but the rest of Animals is dominated too much by Roger Water in my opinion. Trespass is a masterpiece of 12 string acoustic guitar playing and is thus Anthony Phillip's masterpiece.

This^ is spot on, except the Water slam. It Is Mr. Phillips's work to the hilt!
This poll is comparing 5 albums of Genesis to 5 albums of Floyd.

It is argued that Genesis can be beat by so many bands (Trespass-Lamb). I'm throwing the ONLY band out there that I think has a chance. I still don't believe it will top over-all.

Floyd's best album which is a total classic against a decent Genesis album (far from their worst but nowhere near their best).  Easy vote.

I think it would be more relevant to compare Trespass with Atom Heart Mother (both 1970) and Nursery Cryme with Meddle (both 1971).  (and Dark Side.. - Foxtrot, WYWH - Selling England... etc... )

Both PF albums here are in the PA  top ten, so the poll result is no surprise. But to my tastes these are probably my two favorite Genesis-albums up against two of my least favorite Pink Floyds.

Trespass has some classic moments and helps establish what would become the sound for Genesis over the next several albums, but lacks a little bit of polish which was perfected with Selling England by the Pound. Every minute of Animals holds your attention and I will give a slight nod to that album.

Animals. I don't particularly care for Trespass, and it's certainly overrated here on PA.

I was thinking the same thing when it comes to comparing albums, and for 1969 Ummagumma vs. From Genesis to Revelation would be interesting.  Pink Floyd's would trounce it, I think.

I  prefer Pink Floyd up to Meddle over later Floyd (Atom Heart Mother being my fave thanks to Ron Geesin's excellent work).  I used to really love Animals, however.  Trespass is one of my favourite Genesis albums -- in fact it's the one I enjoy most after The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, but aside from The Lamb I'm not a big fan of Genesis and generally much prefer Pink Floyd.

I'm still choosing Animals as it has been the more important album to me over the years, and I do still enjoy it considerably.  I think it's a very fine album, and love lyrics off it. It is my favourite post-Meddle Pink Floyd album.

I must say, I play a side game with my brothers. I Chose Dogs as best lyrics. But how can you escape Gabriel "Hang them high let the blood flow down, in this ugly world, it is time to destroy all this evil now!." I could ramble on but.

Good lyrics, but the lyrics on Animals resonate more with me -- I find messages more poignant, wry, and meaningful.  I'll take the knife part in Dogs "You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to, so that when they turn their backs on you, you'll get the chance to put the knife in" over poetry in The Knife.

Incidentally, i'm not someone who commonly pays much attention to lyrics, as I tend to prefer instrumental music to songs. And  I like Yeats, Dylan Thomas, and Blake, but I'm not much of a poetry guy.

Seems that you are always confronting one of the best albums of Pink Floyd with not one of the best of Genesis..... (my affirmation is supported in the Progarchives ranking). By this way always Pink Floyd will win the poll....

in a certain way two opposite recordings - one marks the rise of a prog group, the other the decline of another group. yes, I say decline - "Animals" is in my opinion a bad album - a bunch of boring old farts don'tmanage to get their asses into motion and are overtaken by punk and new wave. the album is "behäbig", to use a German word which roughly translates as "sedate", though there is no fitting English translation for that word.

so my vote of course goes to "Trespass", though it suffers from bad drumming, in my opinion. Genesis knew why they were searching for a drummer and were lucky to find Phil Collins for the next album

If you're basing your opinion on the rising popularity of punk and new wave in the late 70's and falling popularity of Prog Rock, you're chosen the wrong band to criticize, because Pink Floyd were one of the few Prog Rock bands to make a successful transition into the 80's, with sales of The Wall album outstripping sales of most punk and new wave bands combined. Until the arrival of U2 many punk and new wave bands didn't know which end of the guitar to play, so give me the bunch of boring old farts any day of the week.

Maybe it's just me, but I wasn't distracted by the drumming at all. John Mayhew clearly wasn't the right drummer for Genesis and it was fortuitous that Phil Collins happened to be around at that time, but I still think that Trespass is a superior album to Nursery Cryme. To draw a comparison to Marillion, Ian Mosley IMO is a much better drummer than Mick Pointer, but Script For A Jester's Tear is a much better album than Fugazi.

I am basing my opinion on the album "Animals" alone. I mention punk and new wave because of their energy only and nothing else; compared to that "Animals" is "behäbig" indeed.
Sales have never interested me; if anything they are an indicator of mediocrity. There are exceptions to that; even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while, but as a rule of thumbs it works pretty well.
