I've thought about making a blog for a long time that would be focused on giving some info on and incentive to listen to an album I feel needs to be listened to. This will be solely my opinion but I think I can make things interesting enough for you guys. 
This week's album is most definitely Sing the Word Hope In Four-Part Harmony by the post-rock band Maybeshewill. A great atmospheric album worthy of listen solely because of it's atmosphere, one that sounds like something Sigur Ros would create yet has a totally different texture because of the band's more electronic approach.
  The best song off the album is the title track, a grand 8 minute long piece that starts off with just simple piano playing but continually gets heavier from there. The voice clip used also creates a effect remniscent of Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Another great track is Co-Conspirators which contains the above-mentioned electronic Sigur Ros effect but contains some more voice clips which is something this band uses very well.
Downright nummy post-rock, get to buying this album my friends.

It's been long over a week, but here I go: This time the album is Hospice by the indie folk band The Antlers. It is an album that although musically simple in many aspects, the lyrics and atmospherics of the album all are very complex. It is a emotion-filled concept album (a concept I leave you to decipher) and I love the concept album. Great songs = great album. The folky sound is remniscent of The Decemberists but it shows many post-punk qualities throughout that although subtle really add to the overall sound.
  The best track is probably the closer but I don't want to give that away just yet so I'll start you off with Kettering, the introduction to the concept. It's a very soft and gentle tune that contains the emotional vocals that are omnipresent on the album. Each time I hear this song I am reminded of how great the rest of the album is going to be:
After Kettering, there is a more pop based song which further reveals the concept (I am always dumbstruck by the theme) and flows greatly with the previous track. This song is the one that is stuck in my head as I speak:
Not strictly prog, but very progressive qualities found throughout. For lovers of emotion in music.

We gon' revamp this thread, ain't we?
This post I have yet another post-rock band in mind, Mogwai. Their release Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will is one of the highlights of the year so far and is definitely a high point for the band. Mogwai is one of the front runners of the post rock scene and this album does everything to show you why, it's powerful, unique and always a little bit odd.
  The highlight is without a doubt the closing track which is a epic, intense but still strangely quirky track. "You're Lionel Richie" sort of swims around in an ironic feel for it's eight minutes and leaves the listener wanting to hear it again. The atmosphere it creates sticks with the listener in a way that no other track is able to do.
Of course, there's probably not a weak track on this album so the next track to show you guys is hard to choose but I think that "Rano Pano" is a good one. A just plain solid post-rock track that was the sort of first taste fans got of this album as a free download. It definitely would've hooked me had I downloaded it before the album, the track is just a great one in almost all musical aspects and is even a bit sinfully catchy.

The pseudonym for Andy Othling, a New Mexico native, Lowercase Noises creates a beautifully ambient post-rock sound that every fan can appreciate. The album Carry Us All Away carried me away to the corners of my mind where nostalgic thoughts of beauty roam, maybe it will take you there too. Something different was requested but maybe you should be careful what you wish for. This week I wanna introduce you to the excellent trip-hop project Metazen which just last month released an absolute gem titled The Conscious Cicatrix. There have been two albums released so far and both have full streaming and download free of charge.   Now, I'm not a huge rap fan but this album in particular really just struck me as fantastic on first listen. The lyrics are fantastic and the sound effects and production really create one heck of record. This is actually pretty good. The way he raps is less aggressive/harsh than the stuff that really bothers me. It's almost like talking rather than rapping. The background music is good too. Mind, I'm only one track in so far.

Honestly, this is one of the coolest things I've heard in awhile: The album Collage by Oomkah / Black Sky Chant (projects I know very little about) struck me as a real gem. It's glacial yet mechanical at the same time and there is really never a dull moment. The album consists of two long tracks that touch base with many genres including ambient, electronica, shoegaze, drone and post-rock. Field recordings and recited poetry also fill the dark caverns of this album making it so different from everything I've heard, it's just a cool listen. Looking at Alan's blog reminded me I have one of my own so I'll go ahead and update it. This is basically one of the coolest bands I've had the pleasure of finding out about recently, 6LA8 (just recently added to the site) are an amazing Pakistani post-rock/electronic/ambient/drone group and that amazing blend I just mentioned is what makes them so much fun to listen to. Great music made by two guys with a passion for great music. They enjoy what they do and it shows in the albums they've released. My personal favorite is probably This Is Not A Conceptual Album which honestly, has such a blend of influences, I can't even explain it. Since the week isn't quite over and this isn't a full release, may this be kind of a "something special" post. I have just recently found out about the excellent Chillwave outfit, TV Girl who has released one of my most-listened to EPs in these last couple months.   Although not progressive in the least (well I guess they sample Todd Rundgren) I think many on this site will find their EP Benny and the Jetts a fun little album to listen to. Besides it's free. Excellent sampling, production and grooves just make this an entertaining listen. Lost Trail is a project to kind of sit back and take in on a rainy day, the atmosphere of the music is dense and during times like that it just soaks in more. Luckily, I had a moment like that yesterday while listening to their collaboration with ambient-folk musician Dave Watkins and the album really, really impressed me.  Post-rock with a very strong folky, lo-fi, ambiance here, it has that blend of genres that I love so much. The best moments are during "Mom Jeans and a Bottle of Fuzzy Naval" when the field recordings and drone grace our ears filled with nostalgic beauty. The album is a real gem and really gives the listener something to do with it's density. One of the most brilliant albums this year came in the form of a lo-fi folk record that is so much more than a lo-fi folk record. Julia Kotowski aka Entertainment For The Braindead dished out The Berlin Kitchen Sessions a collection of songs she recorded in various Berlin kitchens with no permanent home. The product was a heartfelt record of beautiful songwriting and vocals by one of the most talented bedroom (or kitchen) musicians out there. ^ That was really cool, Alan. For this week we've got the new 6LA8 album which I have indeed been ranting about this past week but it truly is something great.  This is a much more lighthearted and spacey release than their previous records but it still retains all of their great qualities such as the use of sound clips and some truly haunting passages of music. It is based on the concept of dreams (obviously) but there is a much more deeper concept that you'll have to decipher for yourself. Not a free release this time, (sorry ya cheapskates  ) but still worth noting is the album I have for you guys this week. Liz Harris aka Grouper released Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill three years ago but it has just recently graced my ears, and let me tell you, I'm blown away. Acoustic ambiance always has a way of getting to me and this is no exception, beautiful vocals treated in such a manner that they are truly heavenly while still having a bit of darkness in their nature. A startling contradiction that really makes the album beautiful. Many prog fans shrink away at the sound of lo-fi with very little production but Guided By Voices is a band who can have very little production but sound oh-so sophisticated while doing it. I'm a member of the GBV cult and while they have very little exposure here, I feel that many prog fans will enjoy them. In order for this to happen, here's a free live release they put out called Last of the No-Hit Wonders, it's a great, raw live piece that is a good example of how sophisticatedly unsophisticated they are.  Basically what's here is all of their hits and then some served in a lo-fi concert environment. It's by no means the great Bee Thousand but it's certainly a cheap introduction. Many artists have a hard time being prolific as well as great, this is certainly not the case with 6LA8 who just released their fourth album in just this year, a collaboration with a past member Rakas.  I won't go into a ton of detail, but I can tell you this is right up there with In the Land of Dreams which was one of my favorite albums from this year. This album will perhaps appeal to the more mainstream listener while the experimental listener will find plenty to love. Not even halfway through the week and I've got something to share.  This free little gem is a Class-A effort from a band I haven't been following too long but have always been pretty good. This album is much more than pretty good, it's brilliant. A light and soft folk with darker overtones surrounding it to create a truly lush album. I've shared Entertainment for the Braindead on this blog before but I don't believe I showed her other project, the instrumental and very haunting The Smallest Bones.   The album is a much more ambient effort and less song-based than EtfB but Julia's voice creates some truly ethereal sound effects reminiscent of the previously mentioned Grouper and the not-yet-mentioned Julianna Barwick. Voice + acoustic guitar + computer really equals some amazing things in this project and it is to be missed. The song titles reflect some pretty everyday activities that I know I have experienced so the album has a truly emotional effect on me. In honor of your 15000th post I am listening to Uniform Motion. It really isn't to my musical tastes, but it has some good parts. It is kind of quiet and slow for my tastes, but when it picks up the pace a bit it is enjoyable. I wasn't paying close enough attention to the lyrics to see what effect they had on me so I didn't really hear the story relating to what they wrote on their bandcamp page. Hopefully next time I'll be able to pay closer attention. -------------

It is just too hard to try and pay close attention to the lyrics while listening to it at work. It brings to mind The Decemberists or even the Fleet Foxes while l am listening to it. Will need to lock myself in a room with the headphones on in order to pay attention to the lyrics though. -------------

^ Yeah, it is kind of reminiscent of theatrical Decemberists, I'm glad you're giving it this much of a chance, Scott. So this week I don't really have an album in particular, more of an entire bandcamp page but the one I like the most is probably this one:   Vestiges of an Inherent Melancholy by Celer is definitely an album worth checking out. Glacial would probably be the best word to describe it. Beautiful, beautiful drone music. And they have a whole bunch of it for a pretty good price on their bandcamp page. Everything this duo does is ambient at it's best and definitely worth checking out. The album I mentioned is one of their best but also worth noting but not available on their bandcamp is Engaged Touches which is one of my favorite dronebient albums ever. Who wants more graceful drone? This free gem will cure your hunger. A relatively little known project, EUS really impressed me on my first listen with the short record Vhinto No Dresce. The whole time I'm, impressed by the sheer beauty this guy creates, excellent soundscapes that reach a level of atmosphere I've never felt before. Seems like I haven't posted here in much longer than six days but here we go, another drone album, this one perhaps a bit more ambient and meditative but good all the same. Exorcism - Xela   Said to be the last album by the electronic artist, Xela's Exorcism is a hauntingly dark yet smoothly reflective record laced with ambient drones that are ethereal and beautiful. It's sad to see Xela go after the after a string of truly great albums but if this album is indeed the last, it's a fine way to end. Who wants to lay back and relax? Fall into a deep dream-state loaded with nostalgia? That's why I'm here, showing you Sea Oleena, a great project showed to me by my good friend Joel (aka progkidjoel) and boy am I glad he did.   Shoegazing, dream-pop folk with a twinge of drone and ambient creates one heck of a trip and I really had some good times with my first listen of Sea Oleena's first two records. Both are caked in that nostalgia I referred to previously and fill the listener with a calm that not many other records have achieved. It's been far too long so I have three albums for you guys, to start of this: A farewell album of sorts (the project is on hiatus now) this is 6LA8's latest record, a collaboration with Aus Rine, two very tight-knit groups creating a very beautiful ambient/electronic/drone/post-rock album that is typical of albums under the 6LA8 moniker. IT LIVES Heard a new absolutely dreamy folk album that I needed to share:   Kind of reminds me of a heavier version of Entertainment for the Braindead but it still has the ethereal voice and folk qualities all through it, the atmosphere is just a tad bit heavier.
