Hello I'm planning to write a book about progressive rock. My intention is that it will give equal coverage to all the sub-genres listed on the PA site and so will not just be about the 60s/70s bands with a final bit about the recent years - it will cover everything more broadly. I don't want it to focus on the albums exclusively, and I don't want it to just be a series of potted mini-biogs on 200 or so bands (though those may be included as an appendix). I'm still at the planning stage at the moment, nothing's been written yet. Also, I have very little knowledge of prog, so will have to research a lot (which is essential for book writing anyway, of course) So my question to you is - what would you like me to include in the book? ------------- rotten hound of the burnie crew |

The very best of luck to you, but even the most cursory glance at the mighty Prog Archives will inform you that such a book would make War And Peace look like a Bob The Builder novel in terms of length  ------------- Enhance your life. Well, I guess this book will be a way to increase his knowledge? Especially if all that research is done. My only advice is do lots of research, internet (PA, wiki, etc) and listening to the actual music. I think it'd be good to hit on the roots of prog, like psych rock, zappa, etc Start with the definitive album ITCotCK, and as you said go decade by decade. Find the "big" bands of the times, new trends, influences, changes in music etc also try to find some good but lesser known bands, can't have all big names. I did something like this with metal in HS, so good luck and have fun |

The book will partially be a document of my finding things out, my initial thoughts on hearing this-or-that album, and so on.
I am very interested in prog but know little about it beyond the very obvious basics, and I'm sure such a book would have a potential readership of many other people who are also very interested but have little knowledge beyond the basics. The reader can discover things along with me, as it were.
It'll give equal space to the early years and the recent years (and the in between years if possible) and it'll give equal space to the big obvious bands and the newer or less popular bands
But which bands do I leave out? which bands do I include? If I'm including (let's say) 200 bands then where do I draw the line within each subgenre? Do solo artists merit separate attention as well as the bands they sprang from? Should carpet roadies get a mention? ------------- rotten hound of the burnie crew |

Thanks for the list - I already had it in mind to include most of those bands, the exceptions being things like Metallica and Led Zeppelin - just bands everyone's aware of really.
