Ok, the Mwandishi VS Zappa resulted pretty good, let's how this goes.
Since I left the Mwandishi's debut on the first poll, it's here against the debut of Weather Report which has a similar style of fusion, that has nothing to do with Mahavishnu or RtF.

It's been like 10 nights from now that I've been listening to Get Up With It (or Big Fun) to sleep with, but I mostly listen to it asleep, lol.
I have already listened to In a Silent Way more than a hundred times surely, it's a night favorite.

Good match-up. In both cases the follow-up albums, Crossings and I Sing the Body Electric are particularly stunning albums, but I do really like these as well -- WR's self-titled is my second favourite WR album, but I put Sextant over Mwandishi. Anyway, I consider both essential, but find Mwandishi more essential. |

Weather Report's debut is a pretty solid album that I have listened enough times I think to make a opinion of it. At times dreamy like Miles Davis' 69-70 era or sometimes follows the more chaotic feel of that era in an original way with Joe's great Rhodes, Wayne's sax, Miroslav's unique bass and Mouzon's drumming.
I won't vote till I re-listen to Mwandishi with more attention, this album still needs more spins.

Exactly, I might do that match-up later. I'm listening to Body Electric right now, an album that requires more listens from me. Crossings, as I have said many times in the last couple of days, I already love it but of course, with each new listen I discover new things. Both of these albums are full of details and that's where the magic is.

Guess I'll be the first to vote for WR.
Their self tilted is easily the best thing they've done (though I Sing... comes close). Mwandishi is easily trumped by Crossings, though is probably better than Sextant.
Not that that's what I'm using to judge this. WR is just pretty much brilliant from start to end. ------------- Dig me...But don't...Bury me I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect. |

Agreeing with most of this although I rate WR's two first about equally. ST and I Sing... are both up there with classics of electric Miles/Mwadishi-albums, and I consider Herbie's first album in his Mwadishi-trilogy to be the least great. Still essential listrning, though. Both are excellent entries from the great years of american fusion (69-74). But WR, this time. When you look at his conributions to Miles + Weather Report and add his own three soloalbums you'll see how incredibly creative period 69-72 was for Wayne Shorter (also considering that he wrote many of the compositions). A quick reccomentation by another busy man, for everyone starved at more gems of the era. It's probably not so rare but it's new to me, and I rarely see or hear it mentioned: Joe Zawinul - Zawinul from 1971. Lovely spacy jazz, with a double set of geniuses on both keys with himself & Hancock, drums (Billy Hart & Joe Chambers) and on upright basses (Miroslav Vitous & Walter Booker). Wayne Shorter, Jack Dejohnette and Woody Shaw mm... also joins in on a couple of tracks. -------------

If I went for Crossings against Grand Wazoo (that was a weird matchup, btw), here I'll go for WR's s/t debut, because the Mwandishi S/T debut is the weaker one from that superb trilogy...
To what album will you pit Sextant against??? ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Mwandishi for me - I like Weather Report, and for me their first three albums are their best, but there's nothing on their debut to compare with the adventurousness and out there weirdeness of Mwandishi. ------------- 'Like so many of you I've got my doubts about how much to contribute to the already rich among us...'
