DT are much more consistent, and exciting, even with a few duds, so, them :)

Devy, when DT do something half as decent as Terria, give me a call.

Dream Theater, they are probably my favorite band of all time even though their past 2 albums have been kinda lame.

DT.

I mostly find Devin lacking, mostly because he does not focus in one idea and develop it and, whenever he does develop his ideas, he streches it for waaaaaaaay too long. Terria has both problems.

Devin by a mile. He created his own style of metal that no one else does to this day.

DT added new twists to music that already existed. The guitar hero genre already existed but was very one-dimensional. DT made it into a viable band music. But Devy has more music in his soul than all of them combined.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Dream Theater is great and commercially has a wider appeal! But first of all Townsend does near anything himself and expresses a passion and a certain honesty and personallity in his music which DT lacks, but thatīs allso because itīs soloprojects and more selfbiographical at times than it would be in SYL. But i think some of his records are some of the most sonically pleasing yet some of the more interresting YET accesable metal/rock music out there! DT, are prog giants and i like them nearly as much. Allso they are better technicians and rythmically more complex than Townsend could Dream of, but they are five men! Townsend is himself with a band, the guy can write two masterpieces a year where DT as a unit of five men has a couple of years behind releasing 1 either amazing or mediocre album(Townsend not perfect either) I think itīs a tie, both DT and DT lol has amazing albums in their catalouge! But Townsend is like the Roger Federer of music, in Rogers prime he won  three GS a year, Townsend released two or three great albums a year!

Devy by a trillion country, city, and astral miles. I mildly enjoy DT, that's it. I adore Townsend.

Errr... just a note. Stop using the "DT" abbreviation on this thread, because, well...

Dream Theater
Devin Townsend

Anyways, I have to say Townsend. I love Dream Theater, but Townsend is just such an amazing and versatile musician!

Where the hell did this come from? If all he'd recorded was Ocean Machine: Biomech, I'd take him triply over Dream Theater.

I voted based on The Devin Townsend Project, I have 4 of their albums and love them dearly. DT has a special place in my heart but they have worn off over the years.

Dream Theater used to be one of my favourite bands, but as for the last few years they've done such a marvellous job of deconstructing themselves, it's just got to be Devy, who's going from strength to strength.

Dream Theater for me... even though lately I have been more interested in Devin Townsend, and I believe he is more likely to release great music than Dream Theater is capable of doing ringht now. However, because of their best moments, I go with Dream Theater.

For me:

Dream Theater - Awake

vs

Devin Townsend - City, Ocean Machine, Infinity, Terria, Alien, The New Black, Ziltoid, Ki, Deconstruction, Ghost, Casualties

Is it really a competition?

I'm not sure if it's just me but as a former Dream Theater nerd (at one point), those 4 original DTP albums have more variety than Dream Theater's entire career Shocked

This is the answer.
Maybe include "A change fo seasons", the last Kevin Moore composition for DT (played by Derek Sherinian in that album)

ACOS is possibly their best "epic" song, to me it's the only one that consistently keeps the seriousness and lyrical depth, plus it's cohesive and flows well. ITPOE, is also very good and the only track/s on Systematic Chaos I give a damn about.

But really, Devin is known to constantly shift the ball-park (granted not recently, besides Casualties), he's not as prone to stay in a pigeonhole Smile
