Martin Scorcese in my book is the greatest film director since Hitchcock or Welles and he has yet to win an Oscar. Sucks, doesn't it. What do you think was his best work. I'm kind of on a toss up between Bull, Taxi or Goodfellas.

Yes he is good, but there are better.

Ok. I went with Goodfellas. That's a film I just never get tired of watching.

Goodfellas, every time (the first DVD I ever bought, and still one of the most watched) - Ray Liotta in his best role ever, even managing to act DeNiro off the screen.

Honourable second goes to Casino - DeNiro & Pesci together again; marvellous (even Sharon Stone came out of that one with full honours)

Mind you (and I know it was sl*gged off at the time), I did (and still do) enjoy 'Gangs Of New York'; complete hokum, I know, but visually brilliant, and Day-Lewis (Mr Method Acting, himself) was excellent as Bill The Butcher... it would have been interesting to see Scorcese's favorite, DeNiro in that role, had he not turned it down.

I've gone for:

1) Taxi Driver

2) Goodfellas

3) Raging Bull

4) King Of Comedy

5) Mean Streets

The Scorsese/ De Niro partnership was priceless

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

My choises:

1. Taxi Driver

2. Goodfellas

3. Raging Bull

4. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

5. Casino   (a good film but I can't help but think this as the poorer version of Goodfellas)

I'll tell you one thing about The Last Waltz. It's hard to compare that to his other films being a rockumentary, but compared to other concert films, I think it's one of the best concert films ever done. Beautifully shot with great sound and great performances.

Trivia: What earlier concert film did Marty work on as assistant director?

I voted for Mean Streets

I'll admit the last 2 films lack the high-octane impact of his previous masterpieces like Goodfellas and so forth. But his visual flair is well intact. I thought his replicating of the 3-tone Technocolor process done in the 30s and 40s in Aviator was just pure genious. Look at it again. Notice how the grass is BLUE?! That's exactly how color films looked back then. All the colors are delibratley enhanced for that effect.

the god of cinema.  hugely inspirational in my book.  I never tire of watching his films, but Taxi Driver is my personal favourite - the way the film was shot is just near to perfect as you can get.

I don't know what to say... I know a lot of people won't agree with me but I honestly think that The Aviator was a f**king masterpiece.  Still need to see Taxi Driver, though...

Only seen Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Casino, Cape Fear, Bringing Out The Dead and Goodfellas ... thought they were all quite good, but none of them are in my Top 100 movies ... at a push I'd say Taxi Driver was the best of them

I confess I've owned Last Temptation Of Christ for an astonishing 4 years without watching it ... this is awful ... should do so this weekend ...

My actual favourite De Niro/Scorsese flick is not directed by Marty (he has a part as an extra) ... it's Irwin Winkler's 1991 movie Guilty By Suspicion about the McCarthy era witch hunts ..

I voted for Casino for including in its soundtrack the best rock ballad ever (imho): "Nights in white satin".

This poll reminds me I've never watched "Goodfellas"...a huge failing in my celluloid education!

Of those I have seen, (including Taxi Driver which everyone's voting for), I'd pick "Raging Bull"

Now I realize that I had already voted and posted.

BTW, talking about the Oscar - is it sure that Scorsese will receive an honorary statue?
