He only did a handful of films, but they are sooo unforgetable. Actually I should nudge him even up over Marty on my scale of directors. Being that 2001 is about my all time favorite flick. Straight or high, I've loved it everytime I've seen it since I was 11 in '68 when it first came out.

This is a hard one. I have seen all these Kubrick movies (actually I'm
pretty sure there was one before The Killing and I haven't seen that
one).
It was a tough choice but I voted for Paths of Glory.

You're right. There is another film before Paths. It's the only one of his I haven't seen. I just can't think of the name.

Actually there were 5 before Paths.
Killer's Kiss (1955)
The Seafarers (1953)
Fear and Desire (1953)
Day of the Fight (1951)
Flying Padre (1951)
Hadn't seen any of these.

Wow. I'm not sure that all these are full lenght movies.
The one I was referring to is "Fear and Desire" and it is a full lenght movie. I thought it was considered his debut.

Ok, I went to one of my reference books (Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide). Fear and Desire was his feature debut. Killer's Kiss his 2nd. The others were either shorts or military promos.

My 3 pics:
2001
Dr Strangelove
A Clockwork Orange
I have to say, I did like Eyes Wide Shut. Great atmosphere even if it did move at a snail's pace. And I could've done without Cruise in it too! The guy couldn't even act in Brady Bunch episode. I think William Hurt would've been a much better choice. Or Michael Douglas for that matter.

Who here besides me thinks that the Shining is funny?

I think The Shining is Stan's funniest film since Dr Strangelove. Only 'cause Jack's in it. It's not the least bit scary. But it does have some great Kubrick moments in it. Like when Jack looks over the maze model and then the camera shifts over to the overhead view and you see the little figures of his wife and son moving to the real maze. That's just pure Kubrick!

It doesn't get funnier than watching Jack Nicholson act like a psycho. I remember watching it with my brother and his girlfriend at the time. While she was scared senseless, I was laughing so hard I was crying. Not that is was a bad movie, it was great, but scary does not describe it.
And yes, there are some great Kubrick moments. I really enjoy the recurring elevator filled with blood while the entire film was quiet, it really reminded me of 2001.

My favorite moment is when Jack encounters the "lady" in the bathtub. The look on his face just kills me everytime! It's like "What the hell is this!?". I was rolling in the isles in the theater on that one.

Shelley Duvall's facial expressions were just as hilarious too. The look she gives when Jack tells her "I just want to bash your face in!" is classic! Not to mention the "Here's Johnny!" moment when she's just going "What the hell's going on with my husband?!" And of course, the look on Jack's face when he's frozen stiff.
That whole movie was a laugh!

I'm a big fan of Kubrick, and have voted for 'Paths Of Glory' in this poll... any of you here who haven't seen it really should... it will make you think for a long time afterwards about the futility of war.
It's interesting that Kubrick directed 3 anti-war films, and I describe them as Paths of Glory was aimed at the heart, Strangelove was aimed at the head and Full Metal Jacket was aimed at the gut. They bring out 3 different (but equally strong) emotions in the viewer.
Those of you who love Kubrick, and have never seen The Killer's Kiss (1955), should do so. Its not a classic, and stretches to just over an hour, but its a highly original Film Noir with many Kubrick touches which you can see develop in later films.... enjoy.
PS 'The Killing' is also absolutely superb...one of the most tightly directed heist movies of the 50's... don't miss out!

Extremely tough call there - in the end I went for Full Metal Jacket. Although the film is a bit uneven overall, the first act (basic training at Parris Island) remains the most stunning thing I have ever seen in the cinema.
I have to agree with Memowakeman about Barry Lyndon, massively under rated.

I can understand some people thinking 2001 as boring. It does move at a snail's pace. That film was basically an experiment with what is called "absolute film". Other examples of this type of filmaking are like Bunuel and Dali's Un Chien Andalou and Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi (anybody seen that one?) where the "story" is basically told through visual means with little or no dialogue. Tough to appreciate.

Luis Bunuel was a genius...although it does help to be French to appreciate all his Political & Social Nuances..still, Belle De Jour and The Discreet Carm of the Petite Bourgoisie are superb...

"Paths of Glory", what a superb movie!!!
Kubrick is my preferred American director (although I like several others) and from the list I'd also point "Spartacus" - the battle scene is amazingly well filmed!
Dr. Strangelove, 2001 and Clockwork are also classics! The only funny thing is to see the spacecraft belonging to PANAM in 2001 - Verne's spirit could have helped Kubrick!!!

Un Chien Andalu is fantastic. Got me hooked to surreal film. I still cringe everytime he cuts her eye open . Now that is what I call prog film. Anyone that like prog will diffinetly love that movie, it's so crazy and orriginal.
By the way, has anyone tried the sync between Echoes and 2001, it works alot better than Darkside/Oz and I actually think the Echoes one is intentional.
