Hi please bear with me as i am new to this site and not very good at doing this sort of thing. I am trying to get any information i can about a South African band called Hawk,if anyone can help i will be made up. Many Thanks

It seems to me that their album is African Day(1971),cd release in 2001.They released a second one in 1972:title is Africa she can cry too(cd release also).I never listened to them but I will,you can have more information on Progarchives database.Enjoy lindylou and Good Prog Rock. ------------- I was born in the land of Mahavishnu,not so far from Kobaia.I'm looking for the world of searchers with the help from crimson king |

Great band, their second album was released on Charisma in the UK, with the band and album name being listed as Jo'Burg Hawk with a different track-order and the inclusion of the "African Day" suite from their first album:

That article confirms what I remember from 1973 - Hawk were a multi-racial band and had been harrassed in South Africa because of that: "Hawk was different. They were multi-racial and had been harassed by the police in South Africa for daring to have black and white in the same band. They got permits on that basis Along the way Hawk was "discovered" by Belgium, leading to a tour to Brussels. Bizarrely, the band was entered as the Belgian entry for the Eurovision song festival, earning a credible ninth place and winning them an army of faithful new fans in that country."

I had the pleasure of meeting Dave Ornellas on a few occasions - we kind of grew up in the same place at the same time although I was a bit younger than they were. Likewise Julian Laxton who used to sport a top-hat in public on occasion. I enjoyed Hawks music.
Had it not been for the problems imposed on South African music through apartheid I do believe that Hawk would have gone a lot further. I kind of put their music in the same kind of musical category as that of Osibisa who also mainly hailed from the African continant.
A South African band called Rabbit saw the birth and growth of Trevor Rabin who later left our shores to join Yes. He and I were in the same age group - differently to Dave Ornellas who was a bit older. Rabbit were our first "Supergroup" here and had a very strong fanbase. Rabin was our first - if not only - guitar virtuoso.
