Thanks for the heads up.  I should know this already considering I'm a really big fan. LOL

My Guitar teacher recomended this band to me, but being what i believe to be a mostly jam band, i dont know where to start. Assuming their next album will not be the most brilliant thing they have ever done, do you have any album or song recomendations?

It was Mantis that bit me. Big smile

Much of their catalog is composed, and when they do "jam", they don't jam like other jam bands when they do.

Many call them a jam band, and I used to a while back; but they are more than that. They don't "jam" in the sense that other jam bands do. Live, they use ear pieces with mics to communicate to each other while performing, and by doing that, they figure out where a improvisation will go. It's an interesting concept.

But anyway, as far as studio albums go, Check out either Anchor Drops or Mantis for their instrumental chops and progressive songwriting. Local Band Does O.K. is also good, fun album, with more jazz and contains their most well known song, "Nothing Too Fancy".

Of course, their live shows are really where its at. Their official live album Live at the Murat is a fine live album, high quality mix, and you really get an idea of what they are like live. However, all their shows are available on umlive.net in soundboard quality, and I'd recommend 04/11/2009, 02/26/2005 (much of this show contains non-album songs, which are some of their best), and 02/27/2010.

I might mention that there are also three live DVDs out there.  Posted and reviewed by yours truly.

Ohmphrey - collab with monster fusion trio.

One of the best live bands right now.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Death By Stereo will apparently be more like previous albums (unlike Mantis, which were all songs written for the album, then played live). Apparently it's going to be like a mix of Anchor Drops and Mantis, in terms of progressiveness and instrumental interplay, so that sounds cool. The new album contains a few songs Ive already seen live, and they are all awesome songs, so I expect this album to be at least as good as Anchor Drops and Mantis. I do know they've been adding some house/electronic elements recently, so I expect a little of that on the new one as well.

Picked up "Death By Stereo" yesterday. Ive only listened to it twice, but it's a very good album. Not sure if it's better than Mantis, but a solid album nonetheless. Any Umphrey's fan will enjoy this.

I will say, 3 of the songs have been played live since 2009, and Ive seen them at the shows Ive been to. The last song is also an older song that was never on any albums, so I was familiar with that one too, kinda weird for me. But the songs I didn't know are friggin cool.

It's more upbeat than Mantis, more funk and House influenced than prior.
