Let us not overlook the latest albums by WOBBLER, PÄR LINDH PROJECT, PHIDEAUX and VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, plus the debut album by SANHEDRIN. Lots to enjoy this year.

Almost all of the albums on the top 2011 list I've found to range from being really good to great, and there's a lot of them. It looks like (I hope anyway) that this decade may be prog's finest since the seventies, especially if most of the follow-up years are this good. Smile

the thing with prog its a massive genre ive found you can have something like jethro tull and then transatlantic to dream theater and then early genesis and its a huge selection of good music....i do have one fault though i recently filled my ipod up with prog 32 gigs worth went for a bath put it on shuffle the first record came on thick as a brick part 1, 20 odd minutes later out of the bath and the same song was still on...Tongue

The only prog album released this year that I actually enjoy (and I enjoy it a LOT) is Make A Rising's free EP New I Fealing.

It's a great year for music, but unfortunately not for prog. At least yet.

Devin Townsend Project released TWO absolute masterpieces this year, Deconstruction and Ghost. Also, Toby Driver's Tartar Lamb 2 released their fan-funded masterpiece, Polyimage of Known Exits. You should check them out.

Testimony 2 is great but my two favorites are Snowtorch by Phideaux and Memories In My Head by Riverside.  I am eagerly awaiting COMM by The Tangent and Steve Hackett's Beyond The Shrouded Horizon.

The year's not over yet by any means, and I think it's been a very strong year.

Deconstruction and the Unexpect are among the wildest prog metal rides ever recorded.

All the way down to the new Yes album which doesn't blow me away but adds a nice flavor to the years menu of prog.

It certainly is a pretty awesome year so far, maybe like 2009. But in that year Anno domini High Definition came out, and that's one of my favorite albums ever, so I'm not sure which one is best. Definitely 2011 is better than 2010.

I heard Wobbler's new one once, and I think it is their best one yet.

Pastures by Halcyon is pretty good (and free to stream).

I very much enjoy the new Yes album (most of it, anyway).

I've not heard a lot of 2011 albums, but I'm remedying that now that I am teaching again.  Big smile

2011 albums I have

Beardfish - "Mammoth" *****
Neal Morse - "Testimony 2" *****
Bela Fleck & The Flecktones - "Rocket Science" ****
Yes - "Fly From Here" ****
Karmakanic - "In A Perfect World" ****
Symphony X - "Iconoclast" ***

Ive heard many good things about Phideaux, Hiromi, and Riverside's new albums, so they're on my list.

I'm expecting Dream Theater's new one to be a 5 star album; their first since Six Degrees. Opeth, Umphrey's McGee, The Tangent, and Steven Wilson's new ones may all be at least 4 star albums. A great year.

This was the thread that got me wanting to join, I found a couple new groups via this thread. Wobbler being the big one, never knew about them and their new album is something else.

Now for my favorite albums from 2011 that I've heard so far...

Phideaux - Snowtorch
Riverside - Memories in my Head EP
Wobbler - Rites at Dawn (usually I wouldn't want to hear someone try and mimic Yes, but this is just outstanding)
Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction

I've got a lot to check out, and some that I've heard only a few tracks, but these have been on repeat.

Looking forward to..

Steve Hackett - Beyond the Shrouded Horizon
Van Der Graaf Generator - A Grounding in Numbers (have yet to grab it, been slacking, but so excited)
Proto-Kaw - Forth
Steven Wilson - Grace for Drowning (Pre-ordered, insanely stoked, going to see him in November)

I've felt really spoiled this year so far, and it's only going to get better.  My favorites so far this year:

Wobbler - Rites At Dawn (My introduction to this band, and a fantastic one at that!)
Beardfish - Mammoth
Riverside - Memories In My Head EP
Phideaux - Snowtorch
Amplifier - The Octopus (Technically came out in 2011 to non-fanclub members)
Sky Architect - A Dying Man's Hymn (I actually think this is a stronger album than EotM, which is great as well)

I, too, am anxiously awaiting Steven Wilson's second solo album and also Opeth's new album since it's mellower, like Damnation.

Abacab tour was the first concert I ever saw, and have been hooked on prog ever since.  Worked my way backwards with Genesis too!  Ironic that their first "commercialish" album is the one that pulled us in!

As long as you're enjoying music I guess.

It might be a record year for me picking up new releases.  You might be missing out on some good stuff.

Me too, also.  I've been keeping a list.  26 2011 releases so far.  I doubt I've ever gotten more than 5 current year releases before.

Was waiting for these two and they're both amazing. Haken is without a doubt my favorite up and coming band, of any genre.

Haken - Visions
Steven Wilson - Grace for Drowning

First time listening to these guys with this album and I'm a big fan.

Sky Architect - A Dying Man's Hymn

So far it's been a great year, still have a bunch that I've yet to hear.

The year has turned out great so far. Love Haken's new release and of course the new Dream Theater.
The real kicker for me this year though is the new Anubis release - to my mind it easily takes the accolades and I doubt that it will replaced by anything else as my own favorite album of the year.
For the first time in a long time music stopped me in my tracks and the rewind feature saw a lot of use - the Anubis offering really is that good Smile

Top for me so far, in no particular order:

Phideaux - Snowtorch
Amplifier - Octopus
Hiromi Uehara - Voice
Beardfish - Mammoth
The Dear Hunter - The Color Spectrum
Opeth - Heritage
Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events

High hopes for new Steven Wilson, Haken and Karmakanic which I haven't heard yet.

Everything I've heard this year has bored me to tears. Both Devin Townsend albums were 'competently mediocre.' The clips I've heard of Harvest sound dreadful. The ONLY album I'm looking forward to this year is Tom Waits' 'Bad as Me'.

Posted By: Earendil

This really has been a great year.  Prog I've listened to:

Good:

Symphony X- Iconoclast
Rhapsody of Fire- From Chaos to Enternity
Vessels- Helioscope
Vampillia- Alchemic Heart
Phideaux- Snowtorch
Opeth- Heritage
Mogwai- Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will
Explosions In the Sky- Take Care, Take Care
And So I Watch You From Afar- Gangs
Battles- Gloss Drop
The Decemberists- The King is Dead
Beardfish- Mammoth
Saviour Machine- 20th Anniversary Demos
CPR Volume 4

Excellent:

Haken- Visions
Steven WIlson- Grace for Drowning
Theocracy- As the World Bleeds
Unexpect- Fables of the Sleepless Empire
Radiohead- King of Limbs
GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES!- Pink Magic
Dream Theater- A Dramatic Turn of Events
Devin Townsend Project- Deconstruction
Devin Townsend Project- Ghost
Jon Anderson- Survival and Other Stories
Iona- Another Realm
Neal Morse- Testimony 2
Jon Anderson- Open

Meh:
Yes- Fly From Here
Jolly- The Audio Guide to Happiness
King Crimson- A Scarcity of Miracles
Blackfield- Welcome to my DNA

Posted By: Alitare
Date Posted: October 11 2011 at 19:23
King of Limbs didn't do anything for me. Haven't gotten a chance to get Fly From Here, yet. I probably won't for a long time. I barely cared about Yes after 1977, what faith would I have in this year?

If anything, I'd say Waits' 'Bad as Me' is the best song of the year, thus far. I may go far enough to buy the limited edition version of that album.

I did too. It's the liveliest work I have heard from him (though I haven't heard all of his projects). Frankly, I am surprised Wilson came up with something like this. Dark, edgy music and brilliant pacing/build-up and arranging.

I am new to this site...an older progger living in Australia who still pines for the prog of the 70s   ...and this topic seemed to resonate with the current Prog/Experimental scene in Melbourne and Sydney Australia which are currently very healthy...there has been a groundswell of support for these bands over the last 12 months which is now coming to fruition.....part of the reason is the support and promotion through local labels/promoters Anon Islet (in Melbourne) and Birds Robe Collective (in Sydney)....so yes 2011 is definitely the year where Prog bands have flourished and gained attention over here....probably the first time in Australias musical history- as it has never traditionally been recognised as a significant contributor or adherent to the Prog scene...but this could all change if the current scene is allowed to flourish and gain momentum.

the bands to watch out for are as follows

A LONELY CROWD
ENNIS TOLA
XENOGRAFT
UMLAUT
GLASFROCH
MUSHROOM GIANT
A STATE OF FLUX
MENISCUS
PIRATE
TANGLED THOUGHTS OF LEAVING

....but there are many more....I urge you all to take a listen to some of these bands...the more attention/feedback/exposure they get through sites such as this...the healthier for everyone involved

From what I have listened so far:

Phideaux is a must; Snowtorch is a masterful album, to say the least! PoS's Road Salt 2 is more of the same, if you didn't /did liked Road Salt 1, Road Salt 2 isn't much different. Mastodon's newest takes the band back to the Leviathan days, but with considerable more prog. Despite being a HUGE fan of Riverside, Memories in my Head isn't a bright release at all; enjoyable, but that's it. As for Agents, I did not liked the album at all; it is terrible! I am really surprised to see it scoring so much higher than the other first two because it isn't a considerable departure from those at all.
