At this concert, we're going to play a full set of all-new material and record the whole thing. Afterward, we're going to take these recordings home and do a million overdubs. This will be our next album. We hope that as many of you as possible can come to this show, especially because there will be some audience participation, which will be crucial to the sound of the record! That's at Littlefield, Brooklyn NY, October 5, 2011, 7PM, openers TBA.

Sounds awesome. More details as they come.

The show has been recorded. Here's what some people over at Last.fm said...

Originally posted by Hagun Hagun wrote:

I was there. New stuff is awesome. High energy, jamming drumming (and plenty of blast beats) and a lot of sax leads, I was really into Toby on bass again as well. I recorded a bit on my iphone...but forget that quality. You will hear my voice on this new album - I hope. I left the show so stoked. Although I love Blue Lambency, Coyote, and Stained Glass, this is really the best thing since Dowsing to me. The played the set once, then again for a second take. Got to hear it all twice. It was so good. So good. So good. There was one f**king blockhead that kept shouting for "gang rape" after "gang vocals" were mentioned being part of a song, but there was bound to be one.

Originally posted by AmpleVoltage AmpleVoltage wrote:

I didn't go ( :-( ), but some guy on Twitter who apparently did said, "No violin, no guitars, just bass, drums and two saxes." And Mia confirmed the band was playing without her.

It's also worth noting that Toby did not sing a single clean note during the set. I don't know if that's going to change for the final recording, but those who miss his brutal screaming will be very happy. The new stuff is so aggressive (especially the drumming).

Here's a pic (soundcheck):

Any chances of Mia being on the album from the studio? They mentioned lots of dubs.

Either way that line up of Bass, Sax and drums amazes me. It should sound amazing. Toby is a genius afterall.

STOP THE PRESSES

NEW KAYO DOT ALBUM DETAILS

We've been keeping a bit quiet about this one ever since our concert of new material on October 5, which we recorded for the sake of turning into an official release. For all of you that were there, thanks for showing your support and participating! Here are the release details:

The album contains four songs, runs a little under half an hour, and is entitled Gamma Knife. It was recorded by Toby Driver and Jeremiah Cymerman. It's going to be mixed by Randall Dunn shortly at the end of November, and released IMMEDIATELY after mastering - so, mid-December. Let's say December 16. If you're one of those weird impatient types that makes your best-of-the-year lists before December is over, well, shame on you.

This immediate album release I mentioned is going to be the digital-only version, self-released by the band, without the help of a label. It'll be available on our own website, iTunes, eMusic, etc. etc. And the hardcopy version is going to come just in time for our May 2012 USA tour, possibly through a label. So, look for that sometime in April.

The lineup:
Live ensemble:
Toby Driver - bass, guitar, keys, and vox.
Terran Olson - alto sax.
Dan Means - alto sax.
Keith Abrams - drums.
Tim Byrnes and Ron Varod - audience direction.

with: Mia Matsumiya - violin.
David Bodie - percussion.

Once again featuring lyrics by the inimitable Jason Byron.

And regarding the album's length, let's just say I prefer Stravinsky's symphonies to Mahler's.

I have a hunch this could be the most intense stuff they have ever released. I'm expecting something in the way of "Twins Eating Fer De Lance"... I also believe the length won't be a problem.

I doubt it, we dont start voting until January and most people wont supply anything like a final list until the last week of voting in the middle of February, and its been like that for several years now.

For a full album a sub 30 minute run time, particularly as they were recorded from a couple of live shows that I expect lasted over an hour each, is a bit short and underwhelming, but I get the feeling that it will be the most intense thing they've ever done. I just hope I'm not left with the feeling that they could have done more.

It is indeed a very intense listen.  Excellent stuff, on par with anything they've done in the past, and HEAVY.  Yes, you read correctly.  There's screaming vocals, distorted guitars, and all the fantastic Kayo Dot progressive/experimental attributes we've come to know and love.  Here's Toby's thoughts on the shorter run times:

"What's an EP? According to wikipedia, it's something under 25 minutes... which this is not. Anyway, it's pretty much an archaic notion; with digital releases now, there's no reason for anything to stick to any sort of standard of running time. We're probably only going to release shorter records from now on for the foreseeable future, because it allows us to produce more output and release things more quickly, etc., as opposed to having to wait 2 years between releases. It sucks to work for 2+ years on a long record, only to be sick of the music by the time it's finished."

My point being, paying $15.00 or more for 25-35 minutes of music doesn't make me feel good. Doesn't matter who releases it.

Admittedly, it would probably help if I was a Driver fanboy.

Don't know if you're a CD zealot, but on Amazon MP3, Stained Glass is $0.99 and Coyote is $4.99.  Quite a bargain, I think.  Smile

The thing is, though I will get the download, just so I can hear the album as soon as possible, I'll still be getting the CD as well, because I'd always rather have the physical product over a file, but I dont really want to pay twice for it, especially if they're charging full CD price.

Doing a Riverside and charging over £10 for an EP would be very stupid.

Also, at the prospect of more regular releasesBig smile, but all of them of a short lengthDisapprove.

Quick note to mention that we just picked up rights to re-release the long out-of-print Bath and Leaving Your Body Map in limited edition CD packages with a few extra never-before-released bonus songs.

Also, the previously never-before-released Part the Second CD.

These will come in limited runs of 250 copies only.

Proceeds from the agreement are going towards funding the final mixing stages of KD's "Gamma Knife."

Now it'll be ok when people review the album and say it's "ahead of it's time"
