What was historically earliest progressive rock "epic" composition? To be precise, what I mean by "epic" - It's long multi-part song, similar to classical suite in composition; 20 min jamming of blues/hard rock band is NOT an epic in this context I consider "In Held Twas In I" from 1968 Procol Harum album, ~ 17 min but was there something earlier ? |

As early as 1965 the sadly overlooked band Cauliflour released their 18 minutes long epic called A Milk Snake Charmers Dairy, divided into four parts, or moosements as they called them: Moosement I: The snort of the Cobra King Moosement II: They Tell Us of Your Poison (Now We Know) Moosement III: Milk the Snake Moosement IV: Wee Cow Now  But seriously, I think Procol Harum were the first. ------------- He say nothing is quite what it seems; I say nothing is nothing (Peter Hammill) |

Frank Zappa's The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet came out in 1966 and is twelve minutes long. Oops, did not read all of what you said. I don't know if you consider wierd crazy stuff in your definition so this might be the first or might not.
