Pretty, but eventualy boring. Is it just me or do some tracks remind anyone else of Joanna Newsom?

I'd like to invite the debate of Tori's inclusion in the archives here.  part of the definition of prog is drawing influence from classical music as much or more than rhythm and blues.  I think this clearly shows her influence,  if it's OK for ELP to do classical interpretations...

I think of Tori Amos as being rather progressive in her own right. Much of her early material was clearly a departure from the typical singer/songwriter pianist cliches. Boys For Pele being a good example of a modern masterpiece. Just my 2 cents on her. Love her stuff.

Yeah but generally more mellow and less annoying, and I like Joanna.

My RYM review:

Tentative 4.0. Now, there's not really enough variation to warrant a full on 4.0, by other standards, but this is an incredibly well-recorded album and I love the sound to it. Tori always has a problem with meandering ever since about 2002, but I do think the classical style really benefits her. Her voice is rich and elegant, and the music is flowing, theatrical but high class, wintry and gorgeous. Sometimes there are problems with memorability, but that can be the price to pay for a cohesive album in a specific style. Especially if it is songwriter based.

Also, her child sounds exactly like Emiliana Torrini. It is spooky.

Best songs: "Your Ghost", "Shattering Sea", "Carry".

My first spin was my usual disappointment when listening to new Tori/Kate/Bjork projects.  My expectations are just too high I will readily admit.  But after time I might come to appreciate it.

The highpoint for me was listening to her daughter sing.  Very intriguing vocalist, she may be a natural talent just like Mom.

I think this is actually the strongest Tori Amos album since Scarlet's Walk. Some really excellent stuff although (like so typical of her) it doesn't hold the highest quality throughout, but rather goes through ups and downs along the way.

But a great opener and closer track save a lot. Solid 3, possibly even 4/5 from me.

Just came in the mail.  On my second listening, the first being streaming from NPR at work.  I ripped it for my computers and players and Windows media player classified it as classical.  OK, so Tori really isn't prog after all. Tongue

Oh cool, The Chase was the one that didn't stream properly.  A riff on Mussorgsky.  Big smile

The DVD is pretty cool.  Just kind of supplemental with two song videos and a piece with some interview/background on the album.  The Ireland scenery is really nice.

That off the wall tori gal!! Always comes up with fantastic stuff. I dig her songs and so do many prog geniuses such as Daniel Gildenlow.

Right on right on right on. Big smile

She can out piano any of our favorite old prog keyboardists.  The thought provoking lyrics...
