I suggested this band about a year ago but nothing really came of it. They've released another album since which is much more eclectic in sound than their debut, though it retains the same basic formula of Gentle Giant-y/Steve Reich-y/math rock-y jiggery-pokery...-y, albeit cunningly disguised under catchy indie pop trappings. Oh, I wasn't aware they'd actually been evaluated. Looking at the old threads I couldn't find any input from any of the Crossover team. I do think they deserve another crack of the whip, seeing as they've released a new album since their last evaluation, and one which really adds to the range and depth of their sound. It's a pity that the Crossover team are down on the math pop scene, because there's some really exciting music emerging from that realm at the moment. Bands like Everything Everything and Dutch Uncles really embody what it means to be a progressive rock band in the 21st century, IMO. |

There certainly are some progressive qualities in some indie-pop / math-pop bands (like the recently suggested Syd Arthur, or Sufjan Stevens or Fang Island), but this has to be the least progressive of all I've heard, sorry David.  Groovy interplay inside a super simplistic new-wave/post-punk song structure does not make progressive.

Well, obviously I hear a lot more than "groovy interplay" in their tunes or I wouldn't have suggested them. And yes, whilst they're not averse to a 4/4 beat they've also done plenty of stuff using some pretty wonky time sigs, not to mention dabbling with a capella and whatnot.. Having said that, I was aware they'd always be something of a controversial suggestion because the overall sound is pure indie pop, albeit indie pop with plenty of interesting things just below the surface. I won't lose any sleep over it if they're not added, but I will think we've missed a trick, just as I did when Everything Everything were rejected. |
