OMG two of my favourite swedish band.. Well I got to choose Anglagard because of their perfect career ( only two albums + 1 live ) but PoS first 4 albums are simply mindblowing. Too bad they changed their path. BTW I can't wait for Anglagard new album !!

Anglagard even though POS has made some excellent albums.

Don't really care much for Pain Of Salvation, so Anglagard for me.

OK, going to have to re-listen some albums for this one. And I really don't have the time.
I'm edging to Anglagard though.

Thanks !! Your topics always so good and informative. I like you talk.

I agree with that.
ANGLAGARD with that melancholic Swedish atmosphere with loads of mellotron makes it an easy choice for me.

I almost like Anglagard (though not really) whereas I just don't like PoS, so Anglagard gets my vote.

Another hard one, but I went with Pain of Salvation as they seem to constantly evolve in different directions. I love Anglagard also but they seem to sound too much like mid-period Crimson. IMO Daniel Gildenlow is the most talented individual in prog right now

This seems to be the first match-up where the ones I vote for will advance. Anglagard is one of the truly original prog bands from the 90s.

I like some of PoS's stuff, but they don't consistently blow me away the way that Anglagard's two studio albums do.

Anglagard would ahve probably won for me if they were up against most of the other acts in this contest, but not against PoS.

I used to like both Anglagard studio albums considerably (especially Epilog), but never return to the music as I subsequently discovered other musical avenues that I much prefer; however, what PoS I have listened to was a pain to listen to, so Anglagard it is.

They took symphonic prog and mixed it with King Crimson. They're a gold mine for retro symph fans.

This result puzzles me this time and I'm not being pretentious lol Anglagard has two studios albums that while very good sound like a rehash of mid-period Crimson. On the other hand POS has numerous albums, all different and amazing. Could it be fanboys on here are a little fickle. Until the last couple of albums PoS could do no wrong. The fact that they keep on changing is a good thing, afterall it is called progressive rock?

Didn't King Crimson already do that in 1969?

No, it's because whenever a non-symphonic band comes up against a symphonic band the result is always the same.

This site is a gold mine for retro symph fans.

I am 100% certain that the winners of this will be either The Flower Kings or somebody equally intolerable and retro sounding.

My guess is either Porcupine Tree or Marillion win.

I'd love Marillion to win. Though i'd know in reality people would be voting for Fugazi and that neo-prog stuff and not the great original sounding albums that followed.

The finals will probably be Porcupine Tree vs Opeth. Porcupine Tree will win.

That's my opinion, of course.

If I had to guess the semifinalists, I'd say:

Porcupine Tree- Marillion

Riverside- Opeth (perhaps Transatlantic instead of Opeth... I hope not)

After that, anything can happen.

PoS is one of the few Metal related bands I really like.

But Anglagard is almost unbeatable in my book.

Anglagard and me do not connect, so POS (although it's quite a long time ago that they produced something decent)

I still believe that Änglagärd can reach the finals.

I totally agree.

I followed Marillion in the early 80s and saw them at the Marquee and various other venues around that time up to the Misplaced Childhood gig at Hammersmith Odeon.

However, it gradually dawned on me that they were just not up to the job.

Move forward to the late 90s where I finally found, in Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings a couple of bands that were comparable to the bands that I'd grown up with in the 70s.

The Flower Kings are easily my favourite band from the past 15 years and, like you, I'd never compare them to Marillion becase there is no comparison in terms of musical ability a compositional skill.

Smile
