Gotta go with the classic Kashmir on this one.

It is absolutely a classic. I've always had this love ot "Time Of Dying" though. I just can't help but vote for it if just for those sledgehammer drums.

Ten Years is one of my all time faves.   In the Light a close second.

I think Kashmir is one of Zeppelin's weaker songs, so tedious.  I can't change the station fast enough when it hits the car stereo.

Must go listen, then I'll vote. Initial response would have been Kashmir.

I actually like this sort of poll, where I realize I've not listened to some of the selections in a while, and then damn I have to go listen to the album Wink

Ten Years Gone - but In My Time of Dying is pretty close. Sledgehammer indeed!

Have to go with "In The Light" for this one. Something about that intro that always gets to me.

"Ten Years Gone" from this list. Although my favorite off that album is "Bron-Yr-Aur".

Ten Years Gone is in my top 10 for Zeppelin. Possibly their most underrated gem.

My Time of Dy ring! Always had a soft spot for those long bluesy ones. Cool
The others are great as well except Kashmir which I really don't like that much although it's probably one of their most influential songs ever. It's an iconic riff but there's not much more to it.

Love em all! My favourite album from my favourite band! The one that most blew me away when first hearing though was In My Time Of Dying for Bonham's Drums and Page's soloing so that gets my vote.

You probably won't want to try it but you need to hear a Steve Morse cover of Kashmir.

LOL   yeah it can be cloying, I think it mesmerizes people (even non-fans Confused)..  I've always liked it but it isn't in my top Zep 10

From best to worst:

1. Ten Years Gone - Probably the most gorgeous song they ever recorded, with the possible exception of "The Rain Song".
2. In the Light - The synth effects might be a bit cheesy, but they're perfect for the eerie vibe of the song. Also, gotta love the riff that starts of the "rock" portion of the song. Great transition to a more upbeat section. The lyrics blow, though.
3. Kashmir - The thumping drumming is an absolute Bonzo cliche, but nothing else would have worked, I guess. Although the song is excruciatingly repetitive, the main theme is just so mesmerizing that it's a great song nonetheless.
4. In My Time of Dying - I love the actual "song" portion of the track. The jam, while totally overlong, has a lot of cool parts. Might be my least favorite of the four here, but still pretty great (and certainly head and shoulders over dreck like "Night Flight" or "Boogie with Stu").

Yeah, I agree, I dig it - it's got a loose feel but still ends up a nice little rocker that could've been a single - maybe not a amazingly successful one (nor was that LZ's style of course) but it's a quality track for me nonetheless!

Sorry but I can't stand "Night Flight" at all. It's an uneasy cross between sissy-ish pop and uninspired boogie rock. You hear that guitar track in the chorus? That's the most generic rock & roll guitar lick in existence. Now that wouldn't be so bad if they at least stuck to a regular blues pattern (which is was the lick was originally meant for), but instead they decide to superimpose it on a totally unrelated chord progression. The results are catastrophic to my ears. It's fine by me if you like it, but I consider it a failed songwriting experiment and probably the worst song on the album.

As for "Boogie With Stu", the name says it all. It's just a generic boogie jam with awfully stereotypical lyrics. "I don't want no tutti-frutti, no lollipop" makes me cringe. Musically, there's absolutely nothing interesting going on in this song. Anybody could have improvised it.

Both tracks are 95% about aesthetics, and if you don't understand the concept of aesthetics in music then I pity you.

Posted By: HarbouringTheSoul
Date Posted: November 19 2011 at 17:13
"Aesthetics" is a cool word to throw around, but what does it really mean? At the end of the day, it's more or less synonymous to "beauty" (at least in this context), and I see the beauty of music in the enjoyment I get out of a good melody. If not a melody, then anything else that grabs my interest. "Boogie with Stu" is really just a generic boogie that anybody else could have performed, and the players being talented and Robert Plant having a good voice isn't enough to grab my interesting, because that's true for every Led Zeppelin song in existence. I can see why one would find enjoyment in "Night Flight", but for the reasons I outlined above, I think that the different elements clash.

Of course I understand the concept of aesthetics in music. Music is 100% about aesthetics. In the end it all boils down to whether you enjoy a given track or not.

I don't go by what you mean by it, but what I mean by it. And my definition seems to line up pretty well with what the rest of the world thinks. But if it's so important, then why don't you explain?

"I don't want no tutti-frutti, no lollipop/c'mon, baby, just rock, rock, rock,"  yeah, Boogie with Stu may be a generic jam, but Plant wails....and a great cameo from Stu!

Speaking of aesthetics with Zep is overintellectualizing the most anti-intellectual band I've ever heard.  Zep is all about the corporal.....put on some Florian Fricke if you want to navel gaze, put on Zep if you want to boogie your arse off.

When you have "In My Time of Dying" and "Ten Years Gone", you got me! ... Ermm Though, now that I'm thinking about it, I may choose "Ten Years Gone". Maybe because it's got that sweet romantic tone to it juxtaposed with "mean" moodiness, whereas "In My Time of Dying" has worn on me and is a bit too repetitive.

Voted for Ten Years Gone.  One of my favorites.  And Physical Graffiti is my favorite Zeppelin album.

I've never really tired of Kashmir either.  When I was a kid, I remember how badly I wanted a copy of Physical Graffiti - but being a double album it was a large investment at the time.  A couple of times, I called up the radio station asking them to play Kashmir, and they never would, because the song was too long and they couldn't fit it in.  In light of this, it's a little ironic that it's now considered an "overplayed" song by some.

Yes! Thank you! Playing guitar with a bow is pretty badass and all, but do you really have to play the same riff throughout pretty much the entire song? Confused

In my time of dying, but I love all of these tracks.
Really dig the live feel of it, and it seems to have been just that: a jam session in the studio. Particularly enjoy Bonzo's cement mixing on it.

It's got about 3-4 musical ideas featuring some delicious melodies, nice drum work and the flanger in one place. But the repetitiveness really takes it out of the song. I've read somewhere that the Zeps had enough ideas for only an album and a half. Guess that's why they stretched it out.
