Let us try this again.  Lets talk about the new release from Norwegian prog metal band Leprous, which is titled Bilateral.  I have not had a chance to hear their other albums yet, but I have had the pleasure of hearing Bilateral, and I think that it is fantastic.  Anyhow, I am going to post youtube videos below for those of you who haven't heard it, and hopefully some of you will take the time to listen to them and tell us all what you think about this album.  I didn't find anywhere else where this album could be listened to in streaming format, so if you know of a place please post a link.  Thank you.

I was listening to this album earlier today, one of the best releases from what has been quite a good year. I'd point out the tracks that I find to be really good, but I'd end up listing most of the album!LOL I've got to admit I found the previous album Tall Poppy Syndrome OK but nothing special, this one is a big improvement.

Damn, only one UK gig and it would of course be in London.Angry

I posted a review about their previous album which was totally ignored of course but I remember I realized back then what a great band was being born. This album only confirms it. Deserves more opportunities here.

Ha ha.  Yes, Teo, I actually read your thread and review today which made me all the more interested in hearing the Tall Poppy Syndrome.  Before creating this thread I did a search and found a couple of threads discussing that album but none discussing this one.  To be honest, I was kind of surprised since there are over 100 reviews/ratings on this album so I would have thought that there might have already been a thread about this album.  I don't think there was one, unless I did a bad search of sorts.

    Given this one another spin.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to make this thread concept more interesting?  There seems to be a desire to talk about artists that aren't the same 10 bands that are talked about to death, but it seems that none of these threads that try to discuss lesser known bands can ever pick up any steam.  I hoped that posting all of the videos to give easy access might help spur a discussion on this album but obviously i have failed once again.

I think thatr your failure resides on the fact that there isn't much to discuss about this album. It is excellent, one of the finest releases of 2011 by a clear mile, and I believe that there isn't many things to say other than saying it is extraordinarily amazing.

Well, not many people know the band, that could be a reason for the small amount of responses, but there are some few cases out there that simply have very few or no haters. The new DT album is a good example: it is nowhere near good and yet it has an unreal rating. It is almost as "good" as the other classics, which are much more accomplished and diverse, but when you take a look at the rating data, you can see that there are fewer negative feedback  than the other DT albums, making it score very high.

Just an example, please let us not de-rail this into a Dream Theater thread.

I figured that it had over 100 reviews or ratings so it might be slightly better known than the Fond of Tigers album that I used for the 1st thread which only had 4 ratings.  I guess I really don't know what I expect people to discuss.  I suppose that there could be 40 pages of I like it, I don't like it posts, but I thought that it might make for an interesting discussion.  What is your favorite track?  Which instrument sounds the best?  etc....  All of you musicians can discuss all of the different time signature changes, or the lack thereof, if that is the case.   Not really sure.  Preferrably, I'd like to see posts that say "hey thanks for bringing this to my attention I really like this" but I'd settle for "go back to listening to Rush you moron you have no idea what good music is".

Listened to Bilateral several times. They have a very unique style, and the fact that lead guitar is pretty much absent of it all is worth mentioning when it comes to prog metal imo. I think it's a great disc every prog fan should give a listen to.

Unfortunately I can't really get truly fond of it. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the album never stops (as far as I remember). What I mean by that is that I felt like it was going roughly at the same train of speed and intensity throughout the whole disc, and however original they are, at one point my ears just want to rest from the Leprous sound. But they've got more than enough talent as well as a very likable singer.

I got this album in the mail just yesterday.  After one spin I know this is one of my favorites of 2011.  I wish I knew more about the band.  Good singer, riffs and more melodic than most for sure,  I'll be back.

Did you listen to both bands recently? You can read reviews to know that i am not the only finding this similarity. And as far as i am concern, there are listed on the same categories (tech/extreme/prog metal) Just that Leprous have a lot more quieter moments, but when they show there more extreme side, there some Unexpect influence, (vocals harmonies, time signatures)

I've only heard a couple of Unexpect songs; if I recall the vocals were on the extreme side that I don't care for too much.  They appear here and there on this Leprous album but don't seem to bother me at all.  Anyhow, I am give Bilateral another spin now.

What are some of your favorite songs or parts of songs that really make you go wow!?  I really like the opening track Bilateral, which I think is a great opener.

Anyhow, I said originally that this album reminds me a bit of Haken.  As I am listening to it again, at least vocally, it reminds me of Devon Graves (aka Buddy Lackey) and Deadsoul Tribe.  Is anybody else reminded of him/them?

Yes, repeatedly (both of their new albums are amongst my most heavily listened to this year) and its still no. TPS reminded me a lot of Opeth but they've backed off the metal and shouty vocals a fair bit for Bilateral. Unexpect are an Avant-Tech-Death band with all sorts of goodly weirdness thrown in and whos vocal melodies are closer to classic Pain of Salvation (with added growls) than anything else.

Personally Leprous arent that technical or extreme, they're just bloody good.

Hard to pick out favourites since there are no weak tracks IMO, but the Bilateral, Forced Entry, Thorn, Mb. Indifferentia and Painful Detour are all brilliant.

The only DST album I've got is A Murder of Crows and I havnt listened to that for years since I dont like it, but I wouldnt compare them to Buddy Lacky circa Psychotic Waltz. To an extent I can get the Haken comparison though.

I've not listened to Deadsoul Tribe in quite a while, but for some reason that is who came to mind while listening to this album this time around.  Don't really know why.  My ears/brain work in strange ways.  I have all of the Deadsoul Tribe albums, but I've never gotten around to listening to Psychotic Waltz, other than a handful of songs.  I really must do that one of these days.

I like Leprous and Bilateral is a step up from Tall Poppy Syndrome. (Incidentally, I read Teo's review about 5-6 times when I was an obsessive PA dude.) The review may have ruined the band for me because I was expecting so much after reading the review. They were much straighter than I expected. Good, but no real surprises.

While very strong, it doesn't blow me away. Unexpect blows me away and this is nothing like Unexpect. The band Shaolin Death Squad sits somewhere midway between the two bands, and I would steer people who like Leprous and are willing to go a little more avant to that band. Unexpect is insanity and on a whole different level.

Haken is a much better comparison. Enslaved also has some similarities as they've moved more prog and less black. I also hear Styx.

I don't hear the Psychotic Waltz / DST that much either. But if anyone is interested in DST get Lullaby for the Devil, it's their best. PW best is Into the Everflow by far.
