both switched from bass to el-guitar in thier bands, both also are quite addept at both instruments, not virotuse but have done splendid guitar solos, aucustic plaing and background guitar, both have similar guitarstyles, sort of GIlmoureesque just less bluesy and more folk/eastern modes, both also are skilled bass-players, who have a melodic style of playing Roger is a Fender man and Mike is a RIchenbacher man,

Roger have some really amazing guitarsolos (5 or 6 which are great), MIke also have at least one (Burning Ropes) nice solo on guitar.

Saying Mike has only one great guitar solo in 30 years of playing lead guitar isn't a very much about his guitar solosLOL
But you might be right!

I have got to go with Rutherford, just for playing that awesome 12-string/bass double neck!

Hodgson, simply because I think he makes the best songs with his guitar.

Still one of my favorite songwriters ever, though Rutherford's work with Genesis always was excellent!

To be honest, I never really noticed Roger Hodgson's playing that much, with the exception of a couple of brief guitar solos that are fine but nothing astonishing.  I'll vote for Mike.  I'm sure both of them are great at their instruments.

Mike Rutherford gets my vote. Roger Hodgson is arguably better - or at least more distinctive - on lead guitar, but Rutherford is a more inventive and adept bassist and his 12 string playing was an integral part of the classic Genesis sound. While he may not have been a great soloist on the electric 6 string, he came up with plenty of catchy and inventive riffs in the post Hackett years.

Both great, but I went for Rutherford. Hodgson is a much better singer and songwriter IMO.

As much as I love Rutherford's work in Genesis, especially through Wind and Wuthering, I've never felt he was more than an adequate guitar player. He's a great bass player. Voted for Hodgson, who is a better guitarists, singer and song writer.

Rutherford because some of his work in Genesis doesn't need technical skill but sounds oh so sublime.

This isnt comparing like for like, both are great in their own ways, but my vote to Roger because of the songs.
