Fusion giants Weather Report, it is usually agreed, peaked around '76/'77.
Black Market seems to be more artistically respected (on this site anyway). Heavy Weather is, of course, their best-selling album and one of jazz's most popular. Which is your favourite, and why?

I don't like any of those in particular. I'm a fan of their first phase, so those two don't count as WR peaks for me, either.

Oh com'on. If it makes any difference, I do agree it is usually agreed those two would be the band's peak.
Except I don't agree with those two being the band's peak.

Black Market
And why : think its just a personal thing, the times i had listning to it.
The people it reminds me of, stuff like that. And the title track, is wonderfull. One of my favorite J/F tracks.
Only got 8.30 on vinyl, so dont have the possibility to listen to that one much, (my turnable is not on, unless i dig it out) but that is a great album too.
Heavy Weather/ Mr. Gone shares 3 spot i guess.
------------- Prog is whatevey you want it to be. So dont diss other peoples prog, and they wont diss yours

Black Market, because while Heavy Weather has Jaco, it also has (mostly) unexciting music (a few tracks are exceptions, aka Birdland, Teentown and Havona).

I agree with Rico...for me WR peak was the beginning of the band. For me, the first four are wonderful. Tale Spinnin' is hit or miss and then...well it's very hit or miss. Though I only have one past Heavy Weather.
All that said, I"ll vote for Black Market.
------------- Dig me...But don't...Bury me I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

Agreed. Heavy Weather doesn't do much for me besides the tracks Jon mentioned above. Black Market is good though.

Black Market for me. I still listen to it and think that it's their best album, followed by I Sing The Body Electric. Heavy Weather hasn't moved my soul a bit ...

"Sweetnighter" was their peak & best. But from the poll, "Black Market".

Heavy Weather was my first encounter and introduced many people to JRF. I didn't hear Black Market for many years after it came out. So I absolve it for its commercial success and inspiring a Manhattan Transfer cover and give it my vote.

I'll give it to the more popular one, Heavy Weather, it's less adventurous than Black Market, but has such killer compositions.
And I prefer the mid-period of Mysterious Traveller, Sweetnighter and Tale Spinnin.

I don't have Tale Spinnin or have heard it. My favorite of the lesser regarded ones is Mr. Gone.

Mr. Gone is not bad at all, it has 'And Then' which is excellent in my opinion, it reminds a lot of Duke-era Genesis.

Of the two, I would go for Heavy Weather, mainly for Birdland, but I also believe Palladium is Wayne Shorter's personal peak.

Like many others, I don't think either of those albums is WR's high point. For me, the high point is Mysterious Traveler.
Of those two albums, I prefer Heavy Weather.

Black Market was my gateway to fusion, but I haven't listened to it in years and I don't know if I'd like it that much today, when I'm a fan of their early era (the debut especially). But still I can vote easily in this poll for Black Market, for the same reason as Jon's.
