the two most defining bands of their sub-genere two iconic bands of the 70s who started or was re-ignited in the 70s
both have very distinct styles of music, and varied alot in sounds and often very dramatic and cinemtaitc
both bands characteristic for their high-pitched vocals (or 50% for Tramps),
both Fools Overture and the Camera Eye feature Big Ben in their tracks

Give Crime of the Century another listen.
No. It is totally boring.
In what way? I'm not trying to start an argument, just interested.
In what way.......
I just find the singing and the songwriting and just about everything uninspiring and uninteresting. I have difficulty understanding their popularity in the Prog community.
Just doesn't do anything for me on any level. School for example.......what? I don't want to offend anyone who loves the band but that is just how I feel.
Ok I will play Crime again. Never say I don't try.

More than anything they have songwriting ability, IMO. Rick Davies is particularly underrated as a soulful singer and master of chords. Hodgson could come up with the best melodies (hence all the band's hits). I don't particularly think of prog when I listen to them, but I do love some of their songs. The only album I can listen to all the way through however, is the more conceptual, grand Crime of the Century. The others contain a lot of sh*t hidden amongst the hits.
They are definitely a band that polarise people. But it's less common to dislike both the main songwriters, given that they are so different.

I don't differentiate between the songwriters. I don't like anything they have done. But as I said above in my edit, I will try again.

I was only familiar with their hits, which I enjoyed, until recently. In the past couple of years I have picked up a couple of their CDs and I found a couple of good deals on vinyl so I picked them up. I really like what I hear, but even though, I am still a Rush fanboy, so my vote goes where it goes.

only Supertramp I like (and like very much in this case) is Crime Of The Century. Fantastic album. Unfortunately it's the only masterpiece in Supertramp catalogue.
And Rush then, lot's of excellent albums - my vote goes to them!

For me it's Supertramp. Sure, there's the proggier moments - CRIME OF THE CENTURY and QUIETEST MOMENTS. But how about BREAKFAST IN AMERICA? May not be prog, but a great pop album that didn't compromise the band's sound, and it really defined my childhood coming-of-age, like a soundtrack to my childhood.

This......as I said before the importance of Rush and all that goes with them seems only now to be recognized by some, to the point where they are being compared to umm Supertramp? Sorry I don't get it......in some way it could be viewed as a compliment.
I don't care, I have been listening to Rush since about 1975-76...and for very good reasons. I have Crime and its good, the best Supertramp did......but that's it.

I like Crime of the Century more than any Rush album but I don't think any of their other albums, not even Breakfast in America, really approach that level, so overall, it's Rush for me, far more consistent and prolific.

This is slighty amusing to me as when I was at school there was a chap who leant me All The Worlds A Stage and Breakfast in America around about 1979. At the time I was deeply unimpressed with either. Rush were a heavy rock band pretending to be a bit prog while Supertramp were just very dull. I did like Logical Song though but that was it. As time progressed Rush became interesting and developed. Supertramp just went backwards with tripe like 'Its Raining Again'. Now I would count Rush as one of my favourite bands while Supertramp made one great song that I still love.

if i have to choose ! for personal reasons i have to choose Supertramp , only cause in 1970 , i had my first pair of shoes to walk in progressive rock , their self tittled album still my companion since 1970 , but Rush are something very special to me , if Supertramp have three excellent albums , Rush have three times more than that !

Rush has grown in leaps and bounds musically and conceptually over the course of their career. Supertramp, to me, were a good pop band with a few prog moments. I also think they didn't really grow much other than changing their sound by necessity when Roger Hodgson left.

I have to admit that out of Supertramp's discography I have only heard Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America. I enjoyed both albums, but never felt any serious drive to check out more, unlike Rush, which had me hooked from the first album I listened to on.
So I guess my vote would go to Rush, had I been allowed to partake in the poll. still, sharing my opinion, because I am under the impression that's what forums are for.

Well if you do feel like further listening I strongly suggest trying out Supertramp's first album. It's got a very different sound and has an overall melancholy that you don't often hear in their following discography. Also I find Richard Palmer does a better job on guitar than Roger Hodgson (In particular on 'Try Again'). Hodgson though doing a terrific job on bass (Especially on 'It's a Long Road').
And alternative further listening, try Hodgson's first solo album, 'In the Eye Of The Storm'. Such a similar sound to Supertramp and some brilliant tracks on it too.

The 'Tramps by far for me. Every album they've done up to Brother Where You Bound is a 4 or 5 star album for me.
I could never get into Rush the way that others have, they've always seemed to be a 'wannabe' prog band. I find Geddy's voice to be ear piercing most of the time, the production to be too cheesy, and the subject matter is quite silly. I'd gladly accept recommendations, though.

Supertramp. Rush is quite obviously the more technically skilled band, but their collective songwriting ability doesn't compare to Supertramp's (not to say theirs is extremely exceptional-just better than Rush's).
I'd also say that Rush's music leans toward rhythmic complexity and Supertramp's leans toward harmonic complexity and is more varied than Rush's. I'd rather be Hodgson any day of the week for his songwriting ability rather than have the amazing technical skills that the members of Rush possess.

Quite difficult, Crime Of The Century is probably my 5/6th favourite prog album of all time, and I also love Even In The Quietest Moments but I own way more Rush albums. Rush are a lot more consistent and to this day are still releasing albums that I love (especially Clockwork Angels). They're also the prog rock band that I own the most albums of so I suppose it has to be Rush for me
