Hello all -- I'm a long-time visitor to this site, and I've joined the forum to introduce you to some friends of mine and their band Absinthe Junk, an independent band based in Nashville, TN and Dayton, OH. I was introduced to their music myself by their lead singer, who saw me wearing a Rush t-shirt and told me that her band had been called a "female-fronted Rush". They describe thier music as "progressively alternative" or "alternatively progressive" -- it's a prog/metal/alternative mix (and the Rush it most closely resembles, IMHO, would be from Counterparts to the present). Among their influences they list Rush, Coheed and Cambria, Queen, and Pink Floyd (two members of the band also play in a Pink Floyd tribute band called Set the Controls). One thing that sets them apart is that that their sound includes violin, viola, and cello, all played by lead singer Blair (who also plays keyboards and guitar). They've released one full-length album, Living Ghosts, plus an EP previous to that. They're currently recording their second album, Death in the Afternoon, and one song from it has been released online. For their most prog material, IMHO, check out the songs "Rust", "Road to Damnation", "Commercialized Waste", "Assassin (Someday)", and the new single "Devilish Grin". | I'm probably not the best person to judge this objectively, having a huge soft spot for this sort of orchestral sounding female-fronted alternative rock, but I'm definitely hearing prog here. Sounds a bit like Rush, Evanescence and Kansas all rollled into one, and that's 2/3 prog at least! I love the album to bits, and would be pleased as punch to see the band added to our database - most likely in Heavy Prog (or maybe Eclectic), I would think. 2000+ likes on facebook, samples to listen to in many places, yet their entry on rateyourmusic.com as of this morning was completely empty - no bio, no ratings...no info whatsoever, which I find strange for a band that's been around for a while!! Let's see what the forum pre-eval guys think of it... |

Very nice stuff - and a very nice frontwoman as well  David's right - I hear quite a bit of goth rock as well as prog rock in a nice package, but I'm thinking crossover with a heavy tendency rather than Heavy prog on this one. I'll alert the team. ------------- http://ow.ly/8ymqg" rel="nofollow">
