Minor quibble. If you include Floyd as Psych/ Space you should really choose a Psych/ Space album. neither of you have. This is true for any genre choice. Made In Japan is not proto Prog for example.

How long do you spend coming up with a list like this? I like albums from each category, except Indo/Raga I am not familiar with. But I really can't come up with a favorite from each. Or at least I don't want to take the time to make the attempt! But I am enjoying reading yours, so carry on!!

As for me, I just went with my gut reaction for most of the genres. RIO/Avant was particularly tough, though, because I'd say 90% of my favorite prog comes from that genre nowadays.

Honestly, It didn't take me all that long, I'm already pretty certain what my absolute favourite albums are in each genre, though some of them it was pretty close decision.

i just went to my reviews and looked at which ones per category were given 5 stars and went from there.
or you can just go for a gut reaction which usually is good enough as music is about the gut reaction. If its in your mind as soon as you see the sub you know its the one.
I wish I knew more zeuhl, Indo and RIO besides the obvious suspects.
Shakti is getting full exposure here cos we perhaps have no idea of others. i know I dont. But this thread may help me and others understand more about the sub genres and hear something, a choice from someone, that we actually like.
Space rock is always a hard one as we tend to pick Pink Floyd but thats not true space as Snow Dog has already pointed out. So its not an easy thing to choose an album from every genre, but it is fun and quite refreshing to branch out into other sub genres that we have not heard a lot of.

Angherr Shisspa by Koenjihyakkei is getting a few mentions here, which is nice, but I prefer 'Hundred Sights of Koenji' because of the atmosphere generated by the wall of sound made by vocals. Sounds more like a choir wailing than just one person.
That being said I did put Potemkine before Koenjihyakkei purely on the basis that it's very accessible.
I took ages compiling my list. I went to each subsection and looked through all the bands that qualify for that section (Most of which I've never heard of) and then sorta debated between a few frontrunners which I really do make sex piss for.

Don't know any Indo/Raga.
Personally, while we're on the subject, I think that the "scene" genres should not exist as independent genres here, but rather as perhaps sub-genres of other genres. I mean, Indo/Raga? Really? And Canterbury? The bands are all so different they wouldn't even end up in the same genre otherwise. Krautrock is just a type of Psyche, is it not? And Zeuhl is a form of Avant (RIO need not exist either). And of course most Neo-prog is just a form of Symphonic! Probably RPI is as well, for the most part.

Terrific list
i like the sound of
Crossover Prog: SingularityOf All The Mysteries Eclectic Prog: Il BerlioneIl Berlione
Zeuhl: Happy FamilyToscco
Those scene genres were painstakingly chosen and if any are removed a lot of tea collabs will be a little grumpy.. seriously they are a good indication of what to expect for the artists in each.
today i listened to another RIO album, Henry Cow, IPOL, and once again it was challenging but it has its place.

Thanks. Funny thing is, I think that Singularity should be in Symphonic, not Crossover. But since it is where it is, I decided to pick it!
Kind of same thing with Happy Family. Should be in Heavy Prog; or maybe Avant. But since it is where it is...!
For Eclectic and Symphonic I decided not to go with one of the obvious bands from the 70s. Just to be different? Maybe!
As for the scene genres, I don't have any expectation that they'll be merged. Just making a bit of conversation!

Just a little story about this cd, by Volaré. I was listening in the 90's to this cd at my father's home and let it there in the cd player. And when this cd player went broken, my father put it in the garbage without knowing that the cd was still in it. He made me a cheque for compensation, so i have bought this cd twice.

Sticking with ones in PA categories, and without worrying about how well the albums fit their category, but simply basing it on my tastes.
Canterbury Scene: John Greaves et al - Kew Rhone
Crossover Prog: The Advancement - The Advancement
Eclectic Prog: Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant assassin des mouches
Experimental/Post Metal: Maudlin of the Well - Leaving Your Body Map (but I have limited experience with this category)
Heavy Prog: High Tide - Sea Shanties
Indo Prog/Raga: Clivage - Mixtus Orbis
Jazz Fusion: Herbie Hancock - Crossings
Krautrock: Yatha Sidhra - A Meditation Mass
Neo Prog: Marc Ceccotti - Sometimes Around Saturn (I haven't heard many full albums from this category as most of what I have heard is not my cup of tea, but SAS is an album that I find enjoyable)
Post/ Math Rock: Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die
Prog Folk: Comus - First Utterance
Prog Electronic: Igor Wakhevitch - Logos
Prog Metal: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Swing Along Songs for the Damned and Delirious (but I have very limited full-album experience with this category)
Psych Space: Fifty Foot Hose - Cauldron
RIO/ Avant: Art Zoyd - Generation Sans Futur
RPI: Area - Caution Radiation Area
Symphonic: Clearlight - Clearlight Symphony
Tech/Extreme Metal: undecided and limited experience with the category since my preferences commonly run towards the pastoral.
Zeuhl: Magma - Kobaia
Various: Zodiac - Cosmic Sounds
Prog Related: Gerard Manset - La mort d'Orion
Proto Prog: The United States of America - The United States of America

Very good album. If I had added several albums that I've considred adding to that cartegory, my choice would have been different though.

I decided not to worry about how well an album fits its category when making my list. CRA is a RIO/Avant category oriented album to my ears too, and I love the RIO/Avant category. I wouldn't have chosen a few albums on my list if I'd worried about how representative they are. For instance, Wakhevitch's Logos is more of an "avant" album, and Manset's La mort d'Orion is more of an Eclectic category album than Prog Related, and I don't think that Neo Prog album i chose very representative of its category, which is probably why I enjoy it.

My initial original post took about an hour to collate - but its worth it as now I have so many more I can check up on that I had not heard of. i trust the choices here as they were the one album that stands out among the thousands per subgenre. I still have not much experience with Indo Raga so I have to look into those. I also got hold of a lot of Australian prog lately from the 70s such as Rainbow Theatre, Tully , Spectrum, Daevid Allen and Mario Millo so looking forward to hearing them soon and reviewing.
Keep listing people and dont worry if the album doesnt fit neatly in to the sub - if its listed in there that's good enough - it takes long enough as it is and I appreciate the trouble you guys have gone to as it is helpful!

IMO regardless of some other zappa's albums, this one is totally RIO/Avant.
Any thoughts guys?
Nah, Jazz Rock/Fusion. Weasels Ripped My Flesh is much closer to RIO/Avant.

At least it is a jazzy RIO/Avant.
I brought that up for the sake of thread, however even Zappa himself doesn't care about that

Its a bit like all the people picking Part the Second as their favourite Exp/Post album, despite the fact its not remotely metal (same goes for Opeths Damnation/Heritage for Tech/Extreme).
I think its a case of, its in the genre so I'll vote for it. Heck, I almost went for Blood Inside and I know its not Post or Math.

Now if I could just convince someone that we should also be able to review Blue, Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejeira, and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter on this site....Vashti is great but it's remarkable that Diamond Day , a wonderful little folkie album, flies here while JM has like dozens of albums just as remarkable, more complex, and site-worthy.
Vashti? I will check her out soon as I had not heard of the artist but sounds promising.
Just Another Diamond Day is a wonderful album, and I enjoy her much more recent one, Lookaftering, too, though not as much. Nice to see that she's been included in PA.
Incidentally, this is the song that made me fall in love with Vashti -- so simple and beautiful.

Sure, I'll play this game.
Canterbury Scene - Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt. It's got some stiff competition in the subgenre but on the whole nothing else moves me to quite the same extent as it does.
Crossover Prog - Pampered Menial by Pavlov's Dog. Such an overlooked gem!
Eclectic Prog - Godbluff by Van der Graaf Generator.
Experimental/Post Metal - I will need to explore this genre more before giving a definitive answer.
Heavy Prog - Moving Pictures by Rush, no contest.
Indo Prog/Raga - I don't really like anything in this subgenre.
Jazz Fusion - In A Silent Way by Miles Davis.
Krautrock - Tanz der Lemminge by Amon Duul II.
Neo Prog - Script for a Jester's Tear by Marillion. Not the first neo-prog album, there's numerous releases preceding it, but it was the first neo-prog masterpiece and it's so, so influential on the subgenre.
Post/ Math Rock - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven by Godspeed You Black Emperor.
Prog Folk - Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull.
Prog Electronic - Another Green World by Brian Eno
Prog Metal - Another one I'm having trouble with - not least because so many of the "greats" of the subgenre leave me cold. No Exit by Fates Warning, maybe?
Psych Space - Space Ritual by Hawkwind
RIO/ Avant - Hot Rats by Frank Zappa
RPI - Wow, this is a tough one because there's so many good choices. But Forse Le Lucciole No Si Amano Piu by Locanda Delle Fate is the one which always haunts me so let's go with that.
Symphonic - Selling England By the Pound by Genesis.
Tech/Extreme Metal - Another "ask me later" subgenre. Probably Below the Lights by Enslaved since that's the one which opened by eyes to extreme metal.
Zeuhl - Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh by Magma.
Various - Skipping this one, don't really go for multi-artist compilations.
Prog Related - Scary Monsters by David Bowie
Proto Prog - LA Woman by The Doors.
To chart my picks (counting down for maximum drama):
19 Tanz der Lemminge
18 No Exit
17 LA Woman
16 Below the Lights
15 Another Green World
14 Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh
13 Pampered Menial
12 Selling England By the Pound
11 Scary Monsters
10 Forse Le Lucciole...
9 Hot Rats
8 Space Ritual
7 Lift Your Skinny Fists...
6 In a Silent Way
5 Moving Pictures
4 Thick as a Brick
3 Script for a Jester's Tear
2 Godbluff
And the number one spot goes to...
1 Rock Bottom

I'll add one sentence to explain why I opted for these choices.
Canterbury Scene - Caravan - "For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night" - A classic Caravan album with more emphasis on the guitar, plus it boasts a song about Cthulhu, which is a huge plus.
Crossover Prog - Bjork - "Vespertine" - It's like roaming through ice palaces but without freezing to death.
Eclectic Prog - VdGG - "The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other" - I love this release because the band still has some cool space rock attitude here that would be nixed for jazzier explorations in subsequent albums.
Experimental/Post Metal - Anathema - "We're Here Because We're Here" - Not really metal at all, but since 'post metal' seems to encompass a lot of variations in its sound, I'm choosing this gorgeous release.
Heavy Prog - Black Widow - "Sacrifice" - Not very heavy at all musically, but the combination of fun proggy rock with blatantly over-the-top devilish lyrics makes this one enjoyable (and sometimes hilarious) listen.
Indo Prog/Raga - Sheila Chandra - "Weaving My Ancester's Voices" - Maybe I'm cheating here (she's unfortunately not listed in the archives), but the meshing of such different traditional genres combined with an incredible vocalist with a couple of truly bizarre avant garde tracks in the mix makes this a winner.
Jazz Fusion - Hiromi Uehara - "Time Control" - Lately, whenever I'm in the mood to be blown away by sheer musicianship, I put this puppy on.
Krautrock - Amon Duul II - "Yeti" - Dark and freaky with one baddass album cover.
Neo Prog - Frost* - "Experiments In Mass Appeal" - I like this one the most since it veers away from the typical neo-prog sound, which is a style I'm not too engrossed with.
Post/ Math Rock - Flying Saucer Attack - "Further" - My best definition would be 'pastoral music to blow your ears off'.
Prog Folk - The Decemberists - "Picaresque" - My fav Jethro Tull albums can hardly be considered folk, so I went with The Decemberists and this folksy release with fantastic lyrics and a great opener.
Prog Electronic - Brian Eno - "Another Green World" - I know so little of this genre to the point where I chose this release because I've actually heard it.
Prog Metal - Nightwish - "Century Child" - They certainly don't hold back the bombast, but somehow they make this ridiculous 'metal meets opera' thing work.
Psych Space - Nektar - "Journey To The Centre Of The Eye" - I'm not sure if this is the soundtrack to a good trip or a bad trip, but man WHAT A TRIP.
RIO/ Avant - OOIOO - "Taiga" - From OOIOO to SCANDAL, there can never be enough all female Japanese bands.
RPI - PFM - "L'Isola di Niente" - Not too familiar with this genre at all, but this is my fav by this band and power of the opening track can not be denied.
Symphonic - Genesis - "Nursery Cryme" - I'm not going for a radical choice here, because sometimes the more popular ones really are the cream of the crop.
Tech/Extreme Metal - Madder Mortem - "All Flesh Is Grass" - If early Jefferson Airplane decided to play pulverizing metal, they may have sounded like this.
Zeuhl - Shub Niggurath - "Les Morts Vont Vite" - One of those albums to put on loudly when you see Jehovah's Witnesses heading towards your front door.
Various - "Jesus Christ Superstar" - Wins be default, but it does have some really good tunes in it, plus those godly vocals.
Prog Related - Blue Oyster Cult - "Tyranny And Mutation" - Very raw, mean and sometimes pretty weird, this was the BOC era I dug most.
Proto Prog - The Beatles - "The Beatles" - AKA The White Album, the diversity is vast yet the whole album works as a singular whole as a document to the year it was made.
A decent portion of my choices will probably change in a couple of months, that's music for ya.

^Nice choices, particularly with Madder Mortem (love that band). One thing though that bugs me, Anthema arent Post Metal, they're there under Experimental, as are most bands in that genre which probably should be renamed to Eclectic Prog Metal just to avoid the confusion.

I have to agree in that Anathema sort of went from growling doom metal to a heavy prog(in a Porcupine Tree sense) band. The experimental/post metal tag seems to branch from symphonic black metal acts like Darkestrah to bands like Tool that don't even remotely sound similar. If I had to choose a strictly post metal band I suppose I'd go with Isis' "Oceanic", although I'm not all that familiar with the genre.
Posted By: AtomicCrimsonRush

^^^ its interesting with Anathema that i have never heard the darker growling years and still have no problems with their more recent material. A wonderful album too (4)
