The Rite of the Workday

At present we are working on a large scale piece of music. Back in 2006 plans for the Tangent's full version of "The Rite Of Spring" by Igor Strawinsky were thwarted by Boosey & Hawkes publishers who forbade the release of our version, having the sole rights to this work for many years to come.  In the end only the first two sections (constituting half of the original piece) have ever been made available to the public via a rebellious self manufactured fan release "A Place On The Shelf"

Our failure to see this project through has continually rankled, and now with fresh thinking we have decided to write a brand new piece of music that will fulfil the same goals as our original idea. Although Strawinsky's music will certainly be influential within the piece, this will be our own composition throughout.

The lyrical concept will be slightly shifted. In our original piece we used the premise of the "Rite Of Spring" in the lyrics to look at some views of "Spring" in the modern world, updating Strawinsky's peasant dances and country traditions into observations about streams of traffic into the countryside on a UK bank holiday... and other typically cynical  viewpoints

The new piece will focus on a typical English workday and reflect on what many of us do on those days, the frustrations, the triumphs, the drudges and the moments of reward. It will include true stories,  asides and the usual political sideswiping.

At present, four movement are planned, of which two have been commenced. The piece will feature a large virtual ensemble. Rather than being a "Rock Band With Orchestra" type affair we want to try to make the modern and older instruments mix together in a more cohesive way than some earlier attempts at this genre. That's the aim, whether we succeed or not is of course an entirely different thing.

At this stage it has not been decided whether this will be the next "insideout" album release or whether it will form an intermediate release between COMM and our next "songs" album.

We intend to offer early listenings to work in progress, video diaries and general background to the project from April this year when it is expected that the first movement will have reached a suitable stage. For information about this service, please send a mail to: [email protected]

As yet we have no date for completion or release, rest assured that this site will stay informed of progress

I like the idea of it being Influenced by Stravinsky. Don't know if the concept is my favorite though...

But cool idea at least on paper.

Sounds interesting. I'll check it out.

So this would be a new studio release by The Tangent? Andy makes it sound like it would be of an EP status, and be an in-between albums release. Sounds to me like it would be a "true" album, but I guess we'll see.

I am quite excited for anything The Tangent does. Hopefully Luke Machin will add to the writing process.

Andy is currently not sure whether it will be an "in-between" or an album.  I think they are leaning towards album.  In any case I think it sounds very promising.  Nice to hear that it's a collaboration with Machin, and not just solely Andy (like all their other stuff).
