Naw, it all went down the toilet way before that, when Chris Stuart left. Wink

1980 is the cut off point for me.Duke and And Then There Were Three are well up there in my estimations. Abacab was a marked change of direction. I still havn't bought any of the studio albums from Abacab to We Can't Dance and CAS was deadly boring.

If you are not rigorous about making those two lists, then:

1. Nursery Cryme
2. Trespass
3. FGTR (go on, sue me; I'm a lame-and-outdated-pop lover)
4. SEBTP

Using the same date split as the OP...

1969-1976

Bear in mind the degrees of favourtism here are very small

1 - Nursery Cryme
2 - Foxtrot
3 - Live
4 - Selling England By The Pound
4 - Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

1978-1997

1 - Seconds Out
2 - Three Sides Live
3 - Duke
4 - And Then There Were 3
5 - Abacab

[edit]

Although I'm a huge fan of Genesis, I really wish they'd called it a day after 3 Sides Live.

Sounds good to me. Better than all that boom booming when a car drive past. So loud you can here it in your house as someone drives past with there windows shut.

How can you not listen to Dance On A Volcano/Los Endos from that album at anything other than high volume - it's one of the gtreatest endings to a live album, ever.

Especially when compared to the 'Rome' version

I first heard Selling England by the Pound when I was about 12 and have loved it since, it really shaped my love for progressive music though I also love the era when Peter Gabriel just left and Steve Hackett still was in Genesis.

Ripples has to be one of my favourite Genesis songs ever.

Actually, I did my top 100 list on another thread but the post 1978 ones didn't even make my list. The Lamb and Nursery, though, were at the top. I find it intriguing to see how people are ranking the old Genesis albums in different ways.

Surprised Nursery Cryme didn't make it higher on a lot of lists.  Then I really thought about it and it was only 3rd on mine, too.  Kinda sad, though.  That's the album I started my Genesis career with.

It's been a while since my last list and after extensively familiarizing myself with Wind And Wuthering and Trespass over the past few months, specifically those two, the list would probably look more like this now:

1. Selling England By The Pound
2. Foxtrot
3. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
4. Nursery Cryme
5. Wind And Wuthering

I'd say for the most part, in order.

1. Foxtrot-contains the defining Supper's Ready
2. A Trick of the Tail-finely crafted rise from the ashes
3. Selling England By the Pound-magnificent in its execution; contains
   one clunker
4. Nursery Cryme-good start right out of the gate with the new line-up
5. Wind and Wuthering-ever maturing ability after the Gabe-Meister but
with growing tension within the band (Sorry, Steve.)

I think preferences fluctuate over the years plus Genesis lost consistency as they went on - 'Selling England' remains the pinnacle with any of the albums between 'Trespass' and 'Wind and Wuthering' forming the rest.

1. Selling England
2. Foxtrot
3. Nursery Cryme
4. The Lamb
5. Trick of the Tail

Though I love Wind and Wuthering and enjoy Trespass. I haven't heard much of their later stuff, as most of the bits I did hear were bad.

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Foxtrot
Nursery Cryme
Duke
Abacab

The others have some great stuff but not enough. Firth of Forth, Dancing With The Moonlight Knight and The Battle Of Epping Forest but the rest of that album is a lot lower in standard.
And yes I realise I wrote standard and included Abacab, but I was in a really happy place when I heard that one! Yes, even Whodunit!
