Floyd are one of those bands to not only have a catalog of wonderful music, but to also have some pretty amazing album covers as well. Which is your favourite and which is your least favourite?

Favorite: 'Relics'. 'More' would be my favorite image-wise, but it's hindered by the "soundtrack to the film etc." words and the EMI logo.

Least favorite: 'Delicate Sound Of Thunder'. The whole "ponder the meaning of this image" thing was getting out of hand at this point. That Masters Of Rock one is brutal, but in a craptastic sort of way. DSOT was just plain silly.

I've seen it. It's pretty shallow in my opinion. It's about a loser who loses it and eventually just loses. It's got an original plot, but no true aim, from where I'm standing. A lot of drugs in there.

On the topic:

For the most favorite: I'm stumped a bit. Can't choose (unless I really have to choose if this is not a democratic regime we have here) between "Obscured by Clouds" and "A Saucerful of Secrets".

Looks like God is planting the seeds of the planets in the universe (those orange round symbols), as the group sails away on the boat. And then there are bottles (of alcohol, I suppose) ... and the figures on the upper left corner and on the right side:

And then there is this blurry image of the silhouette of a tree against the background of the vanilla sky and orange sun. Very folky, somewhat atmospheric:

Least favorite:

It fits the concept, but it looks just as cold as the concept is. My least favorite, but still a favorite.

For my favourite
1/ DSOTM is beautifully simple.
2/ Saucerful is beautifully complicated
=3/ Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother are amusing

Least favourite is
Wish You Were Here which I find totally boring and cannot understand why people like it.
Meddle is the other Floyd cover I don't like.  It is unpleasant (slightly preferable to boring in this context).

That cover was for the the the most recent Floyd remasters campaign - Why Pink Floyd? Some covers were slightly modified such as this one and The Wall. The text on the cover of The Wall was changed to red from black and as for this cover, the text was completely taken out and there is obviously no black border surrounding.

Still sounds interesting though. Do you have a physical copy of the film or did you just watch it online? I think I'll do that, since it isn't exactly a movie you'd commonly find in stores. Smile

Released in 1974, I assume this is well before the days when the Floyd (or Waters) had absolute control over what was released in their name.

It really is rather awful, isn't it?

It was released on EMI/Columbia when Floyd were signed to EMI/Harvest and consists of Syd Barrett era stuff - I don't think Floyd had any control over Syd era material at that time.

The really horrible bit (aside from the dayglo t-shirts and sub-Warhole colourisation) is the awful superimposing of Syd's face on David's body:

Not that I'm against your perception, but I read it on the official Pink Floyd facebook page recently. However, I would rather like if it was sunlight, but yeah, it's a man.

No "What-ev-er" - it's a man in a tree - Wikipedia says it's a man in a tree, most PF websites say it's a man in a tree and most importantly Storm Thorgerson says it's a man in a tree in his book 'Mind Over Matter - The Images of Pink Floyd' - in fact that's the exact bloody phrase he uses: 'The slide in question - a man in a tree - soon came up and the defocused lens caused the little chinks of sunlight between the leaves to expand and transmute into incandescent hovering spheres, reminiscent of the old bubble slides of early Pink Floyd concerts'. (page 46).

So no "What-ev-er" - it's a man in a tree - you can see "what-ev-er" you sodding well like, you can see pink pigs flying over the surface of Cirus Minor for all I care, but it's still a man in a tree.

No need to appologise - it doesn't matter whether you can see it or not - it doesn't matter whether what you can see is a man or just random patterns in the image - that's kind of the beauty of imagery, you can see what you like in any image and make you own interpretation - however that does not change the fact that the original photograph is of a man in a tree. That's all I'm saying really.

Wiki is a place where anyone can write anything about anything, although I see a lot of citing, and that's good ... which is not to say that those articles are written by professionals.

PF websites? Depends, really. There may be official and unofficial ones. Depends on who is writing and what source he is using as his reference. Until I don't find out where the info comes from, I won't seriously consider it unless it's something I already know.

^ Yes, exactly. The picture of those military uniform shoulder pads on the cover of a war-themed album - very appropriate.

How do you? Man, it's all blurry.
Simple - you squint.

Maybe it's not a tree. Maybe it's night sky with some sparks in the foreground. S#$%w it. LOL Whatever.

I cant believe people cant see that its a man in a tree!!!!

I dont own the album, but As soon as I read about it on my iphone official Pink Floyd application I searched it and checked it out. The man is there as plain as day. And Gilmour quotes that the slide was put in incorrectly and was too blurry but it was just what they needed to add a mystery to the cover. It also looked psychedelic so it was fate really and they went for it. Interesting cover though pretty bad.

After owning the album for 20 years, I had a revelation last night: Yes, there is definitely a man in a tree on the cover of Obscured by Clouds.

This thread is not a great place to have this conversation. I can't believe I fell into this trap.

The original black and white photo appears on the inner cover to Meddle:

They've superimposed Barrett's head on Gilmour's body from this photo:

et viola! Pure adulterated crap:

Maybe it looks better in vinyl format and quality of sleeve for somebody with special psychedelic feeling.

You don't get irony and sarcasm do you? Wink
"I have the quadraphonic version, of course." - there was no quadraphonic version... it's a joke.

"The original release came with a strobe light, a liquid light projector and dry ice." - now, think about it... it's a joke.

"Storm's greatest album cover ever!" - it wasn't by Storm it was by Herman Baas... it's a joke.

"It's so mysterious and cool to look at." - no it isn't... it's a joke;

"This is pink floyd's second greatest album after Collection Of Great Dance Songs." - Collection of Great Dance Songs is their worse compilation... it's a joke

"All songs written by Roger Waters except for tracks 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 &10 which were written by either Syd Barrett or Rick Wright." - there are only ten tracks, Waters wrote only one of them, track 9... it's a joke

"5 Stars!"... it's a joke.

...actually it is an okay compilation because of the inclusion of Candy And A Current Bun, Apples and Oranges and It Would Be So Nice which weren't available on LP at that time.

Back on topic:
I want to say The Wall or The Final Cut is my least favorite cover, but both say so much about the music inside the album.  I also want to say Momentary Lapse or Division Bell, but I know that it's the music on both that I find lacking.....in fact, the cover may be the best thing about Momentary (though I have been softening on both albums over the years).  You see - these are my four least favorite Floyd albums, and I've been throwing out the baby with the bathwater....dismissing the covers 'cause I don't dig the music.

When being more objective, I find that the Ummagumma cover - though I like both the studio and live sides - leaves a lot to be desired.  And it's the only one besides Piper that features the band members on the cover.  The more the members of the band got out of the way of the music, the better both music and cover became.

Having said that, my fave cover:  Animals.....also my favorite Floyd music.  See - it's tough to separate the cover from the sounds.
