Taken from a interview held by Yann in april 2009 for the french website "aux portes du métal" :

Yann : "You're a Frank Zappa fan. You like creative things. What do you think of the creativity of new metal artists ? What are you listening these times ?

Devin : I love bands like Opeth, Gojira, Messhugah, they're very creative, brilliant. But honestly, I never listen to it, never. Because it's too heavy. I listen to a lot of new age music, like the french band Air, Enya, Paul Horn, then again Stravinski. I love dance music, I love that. The only metal song I remember recently was the second song from "From Mars To Sirius" by Gojira. That's the only song I remember that made me bang my head. I really respect Messhugah, I really respect Opeth but I don't listen to much metal. I listen to music for production, I listen to Nickelback for production and the mix (I don't like the music !), I listen to classical music, I listen to the Young Gods. When I first listened to "Second Nature" by the Young Gods, it didn't affect me at all, it's so minimal. But after a while, I loved it.           "

Maybe he doesn't listen to metal now, but he must have been some kind of fan when he was younger.

Apparently Ihsahn doesn't listen to metal anymore either. They could listen exclusively to show tunes as long as they keep pumping out high quality music as they have been.

I was thinking the exact thing when I read it.

Honestly, I think that he is missing out on a looooot of really good metal that isn't quite as heavy as Gojira or Opeth... I can't see myself ever not at least checking out other music within the genre of music that I actually write. Ha

Well, the Metal he listens to is certainly awesome! Yeah, really interesting guy. One of those musician I hope to have the chance of meeting someday in person. He's got some pretty eclectic influences and inspiration to say the least - Ghost was definitely a transition.

In an articale in classic rock presents prog Devin says he listens to country because if he listens to something closer to his own genre he'll start analysing it.

He used to be a big Fear Factory fan. I remember him saying that in an interview back in the day. I think it´s pretty obvious when you listen to the early SYL albums.

April 2009? Not exactly "news".
I also remember an interview for the French magazine Hard-Rock Magazine in 1998 or 1999, in which he explained he was rather entertained by the ridiculous aspects of metal music.

He has to take a break after listening and playing to his own music. It's understandable.

Clearly, he has to at least check out the music to know anything about it, but just as clearly he does not listen to it for his own enjoyment.  He can listen to whatever he wants, but as a man in the biz he has to know what is going on.  This is not much different from Barry Manilow saying he was a huge Deep Purple fan.

Is quoting a video over and over bad for PA server space?

He listens to Nickelback? Not for the music but for the production? weird.

I'm not a big fan of his Devins music at all really, I can see now where our tastes differ

DT knows exactly what he's doing... he's been using protools for what, 15 years?  the thing that always amazes me about his records is the production... it's tight without seeming overcompressed.. in a different world he would be bob F****** rock...in the sense that he would be a 'sought after producer' of metal & mainstream rock albums.. but i think he has found a better way to make a 'living' for himself and his family... he's not greedy/desperate and it shows... i think he's accepted his life without becoming desperate... hopefully, he'll avoid mid-life crisis.. but it's unpredictable and could be very 'entertaining' ... ;P

Count me among Voivod fans, all eras melted. Rooaaarrr (sorry, don't remember the number of o, a and r) was one of the first thrash metal CDs I bought.

I'm new to Devin Townsend's music, and from what I've heard from Addicted and Deconstuction I would have thought that metal was HIS music. I think that there's a lot of softer-edged metal bands that Devin doesn't know about (Porcupine Tree, Fates Warning, Pain of Salvation, Threshold), bands that might be more suited to him. Devin seems like a genius though, so I won't tell him what to listen to Smile

Haha, reminds me very much of an interview with Ron Jarzombek around 1990 where he said that he doesn't listen to Metal at all but to music like Janet Jackson, only because of the mix and production and Allan Holdsworth of course...

Devin's music is great, the only issue I have sometimes is the similarity of the sounds and synths.

I am surprised that Devin Townsend doesn't listen to metal!
This is like telling Mike Portnoy doesnt listen to progressive rock!

I'm the same way.

My own music is prog/metal/experimental - and most of my daily listening is punk and indie!

Its weird - sometimes a composer doesn't produce the kind of music he listens to. Its a weird phenomenon, but its the way I've been since I got out of grad school.
