Very sad news. We have lost a true elder statesman of music.

The website says "It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Jon Lord, who suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism today, Monday 16th July at the London Clinic, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jon was surrounded by his loving family."

Broken Heart
Saw the man play back in 1998. He was a true force of nature. I've honestly never heard anything like it in my life - and that Hammond organ... man that Hammond organ.
I'll pop on one of the first Deep Purple albums in his honour tonight. Rest in peace Jon - and my heart goes out to your family.

Just saw this on another site. RIP Jon. Though he as well as many others of his time had some classical aspirations and/or pretentions, no one else, not Emerson, not Wakeman, could flat out play heavy rock quite like Jon. The sound is well preserved on DP In Rock.

He came across well in interviews as a genuine nice bloke. He admitted he couldn't have been like Keith Emerson and saw himself as a supporting player rather than a 'lead'. Child In Time amongst many great tracks is the one I like best for his playing. The best pure rock organist that ever lived. RIP Jon.

A very underrated one, if you ask me. His "Concerto for Group and Orchestra" is reasonably well known, but the superior (IMO) "Gemini Suite" is rarely mentioned. I used to have it on vinyl and played the hell out of it as a teenager. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXiY1Up2bT0" rel="nofollow - Worth checking out , if you've yet to do so.

Jon Lord, a man I did not know personally.

Jon Lord, a man who would have walked past me in the street without recognition.

Jon Lord, a man whose playing introduced me to how rock organ could sound.

Jon Lord, a man whose playing introduced me to an entire genre.

Jon Lord, a man whose legacy can and will be heard in virtually every rock Hammond player.

Jon Lord, a man for whose passing I unashamedly shed a tear this evening.

Jon Lord, a true icon of Rock music.

Jon Lord.

Rest In Peace.

I never heard a progrock band before the Spring of 73.
A friend of mine gave two tapes to hear:
1- Dark side of the moon
2- Machine head

I never forgot that moment and I have all Deep Purple's cds until Stormbringer. Why?
For the keyboards, you can substitute Ian Gilan or Ritchie Backmore, but without JON LORD there is no Deep Purple at all.

Thank you for your music Jon, specialy the "Concerto for Group and Orchestra".

His Music is in my heart and in my head - always.

Deep Purple was the first band I ever got into, and it actually took me a while to realize that the guitar was one of the things they were most famous for, but that is because my first stereo system had a short on one of the speakers - the one that always featured Blackers.  So I got a good dose of Jon Lord during that very early time.  There was a period where I disparaged his playing, but I have long since learned the error of that attitude.  Jon could rock.  Jon could roll.  Jon helped to save my soul.  I mourn his passing yet celebrate his music.  Rock on Jon, rock on. May your (highway) star never be forgotten. Star

What an imposing legacy Jon leaves behind!  I fell in love with the Hammond B3 at a very early age and he was one of the first to make it sound like an uncaged behemoth on a rampage so I gravitated to Deep Purple without resistance and became one of their biggest fans.  He didn't let his classical upbringing interfere with his urge to rock & roll but allowed the two influences to mingle and produce sounds previously unheard.  When he took a solo it was no step down from what Blackmore was shredding on the other side of the stage and that's saying a lot right there.  Thank you, Jon Lord, for being a magnificent musician, a progressive pioneer and for showing us all how it's done.  Rest in Peace.

I've been away up in the mtns for a number of days and just now got home, cking into the news Sad sad indeed. Aurora CO theatre shooting, Jon Lord passing last week
I will just sit tight today and regroup.

Jon's Hammond was distinctive for DP and his playing style was unequaled, the swells and Leslie technique -superb.

Being a huge fan of orchestral pieces with rock etc.
I am listening to the 1999 DP & LSO concert and am blown away by it.
Not sure why I never listened to it previously but it's nice to discover these gems !

God Speed Jon Lord....

God bless Jon Lord. It was sad to see him go. Death is not the end but a glorious transition. Spirit lives on beyond this human vessel. May he rock the heavens with his musical fingers!
