Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez have left American Idol as judges, opening up two new positions?  Which two prog singers/musicians would you like to see replace them in order to make the show more interesting and worth watching for you?

Great thread.  Just going with vocalists, I think it would be hillarious to have Geddy Lee or James Labrie on the judging panel.  Toby Driver and Peter Hammil would also be interesting.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez
Peter Gabriel
Rich Balling (Rx bandits/TSOAF)
Me because I'd be the cynical a****le that hates everyone, even the other judges, that this show needs. (Although Omar could be just as big of one probably. Actually, probably moreso)

Oh shoot yea Peter Hammil or Toby Driver good too- I second those.

King Crimson went through a number of vocalists throughout the years.  Could you see Mr. Fripp playing the Simon Cowell role?

If Omar was on the show, it would be the greatest season of American Idol ever, and I would watch it despite my hate for reality television and all that it stands for.  I say they should replace J-Lo and Steven Tyler with Omar and Cedric.

Could have Mikael Akerfeldt as a judge and have him make the contestants give their best growls.

Jon Anderson and Steven Wilson would definitely spice things up!

I'd love to see Christian Vander give some coaching on falsetto singing.

Realistically, though, for some reason Peter Hammill came to mind.  I really think he'd be an appropriate choice.

From the younger generation, the Mars Volta guy would be pretty choice too.

I suspect that the only way it would actually happen was if they were to select someone famous like Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins or Greg Lake.

I could see Rick Wakeman doing it, with his Grumpy Old Men program and all.  He could probably add a lot of humour to the program.

Actually, the obvious choice would be Chris Squire, with the winner becoming the newest Jon Anderson replacement for their next album and tour.

Yep.  They also had the one with Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters.  Rockstar Supernova, or whatever it was called. I think that the INXS one may have been the 2nd season.

Ian Anderson would provide quite a bit of acerbic wit, I would think.  Brian Eno might provide an intriguing perspective.

Bill Bruford---he's smart, cutting, sarcastic and a musical snob---perfect.

Another thought.  Gentle Giant's Derek Shulman.  He has made a living out of signing musical talent.

I'd rather they spurned it like the garbage it is and got on with making great music.

Somehow resurrect Frank Zappa, then I would watch.

Thinking realistically, Peter Hammill, Ian Anderson, and Fish were mentioned above, and would probably have interesting things to say.

The show is so antithetical to prog that none is the right answer.

That is kind of the point of the thread though.  Personally, I really can't stomach the show, and I like some popular music.  The idea being, that if x prog vocalist/musician were added, it would make the show more interesting.  Obviously, this is making the bold assumption that by having that musician as a judge, the music that is performed would also be more progressive.  I agree that progressive rock is more about the music than the vocals, but there are certainly progressive songs that have great vocals, or great sounding vocals, even if the lyrics are about the Lord of the Rings and pink fairies floating in purple mountains.

Make Fripp and Hammill the judges.  Or anybody else who will blast the hell out of these contestants and scare them off stage for good.

I could totally see the boys from TMV being judges, and Omar criticizing singers in his typical philosophical, intellectual way. LOL Maybe Jonsi from Sigur Ros and Geddy Lee as well.

I would like to see Fred Firth hammering every single one of the contestants for being unoriginal, tedious and for lacking "artsmanship". Toby would just be there being depressed, I think.

Apparently, Mariah Carey will be one of the new judges.  That should make a certain segment of PA old-timers quite happy.
