I don't have any Tool albums and i'm searching for one. What album should I buy. Undertow, AEniema, Lateralus or 10 000 Days

Lateralus has been the only one I've been able to stand.  Haven't heard 10,000 Days, but I've heard the other three.  Not really a fan, but Lateralus had some neat Crimson-like music on it.

Lateralus should do the trick, it's the definitive Tool album. Then proceed to Ænima and 10,000 Days. Undertow and Opiate are not essential but interesting enough for fans.

Lateralus is my favorite, with Ænima a VERY close second.

I agree, Lat is their most consistant work, impressive. The rest of the albums in order as above Smile

All of their albums are really good, quite consistent too actually. Lateralus is their celebrated masterpiece, so I'd say go for that one first; 10000 Days would be my second choice. Excellent Art, Experimental Metal. Thumbs Up Danny Carey is a beast on drums.

Tool is just SOOOOOO monotonous. So i really don't listen to them much, besides some stuff off of 10,000. Maybe some of Lateralus here and there. The Patient is my favorite song off of the album, and Rosetta Stoned on 10,000 Days.

The Patient is awesome, definitely a stand out. Reminds me of 'H' from Aenima in some ways

I say it doesn't matter which one you get. Except for Opiate. Don't get Opiate. With any of thier other albums you will be able to tell if you like the band or not. Get the one with the coolest cover... that should work fine for your purposes. My fav is 10,000 Days if it really matters to you.

For me, Lateralus has more peaks but 10000 Days is more consistant. I'd go reverse chronological order.

I hate them all apart from half of Lateralus, but I think I might be in the minority. Judging by my music taste I should love them but there's something that just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe the overhype, poor production; something like that.

At least try Lateralus, but don't expect to like any other albums.

Aenima definitely; listened to it long time ago and to this day, I never got bored with it. Now that's what i call a great album, something that never gets old.

My fave TOOL album is 10,000 DAYS.  From Vicarious to The Pot to Right In Two --- you will find primal, profound music and lyrics throughout the album.

ALL!  (Yes, even Opiate and Undertow)

But, to start?  I'd go with Aenima.  THEN Lateralus.  You might appreciate Lateralus more that way.

my prob was gettin into Lateralus first, Aenima sounded weak in comparison and 10,00 days just sounded like a retread

I would say Lateralus after that 10'000 days and if you must Aenima which is not as good as the others IMO.

I´m not much of a fan of their later material so I´d recommend Undertow and then AEniema.

Miss Aenima as its inferior to these other albums.

Lateralus is their finest album, Aenima is pretty good. 10,000 Days didn't click with me after a handful of listens, but it's been a few years so I should probably give it another shot.

Many opinions here, for very few albums... Tongue
I suggest Lateralus and 10.000 days as first ones. If you like their style, continue to the others...

Yeah, and also there is a kind of rambling quality in their tracks.  At least that's what I feel when I listen to them, like I have to wrap my ears around the song rather than the other way round.

Looking at all the above posts it seems that t the best thing to do would be to write each album title on a separate piece of paper.  Put them in a hat and pull one out with your eyes shut.  Buy that one!
