Hello all! I am fairly new to progressive rock, and would like some advice on what to listen (or not) listen to. About a year ago I got into rush a little (thanks to my dad), and they have now become my favorite band. Seemingly all at once I discovered yes, genesis, pink floyd (I had already listened to some of this), jethro tull (Second favorite band), and a little elp. Listened to a little progressive metal, didn't get into that too much. My favorite song of all time is thick as a brick. So, any advice on what I should listen to? There's so much music I am not sure where to turn first! Besides being into prog I also like good acoustic guitar pieces a lot, as I play the guitar. Unfortunately no one I know has the same taste in music as me that I know among my age. I am 14. ------- Thanks!

Anthony Phillips has some good acoustical guitar stuff. The Geese And The Ghost is properly regarded as one of his best. Also, Private Parts And Pieces III was very inspirational to me. It's a an acoustical duet.

The seed has been planted so now it's just a matter awaiting time for growth. I would strongly suggest checking out Marillion (Misplaced Childhood, Clutching At Straws), Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant. although you might not be ready for these bands just yet. I would explore ELP more in-depth since you mentioned you've very little from them. Good luck! You sound a lot like me at that age, though I didn't really get into Tull until several years later. I'd say Camel and Caravan would be up your alley. Both classic bands on a par with the biggies you already know. Just look at their discographies in ProgArchives, read some reviews, see what strikes your fancy. Both bands are part of a large family tree of bands (mostly known as "Canterbury bands"), so if you like this stuff, there's lots of related stuff to try too. ------------- My other avatar is a Porsche It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle if it is lightly greased. -Kehlog Albran |

Check out the top albums in each sub genre on the site (maybe leave out those you already know you won´t enjoy). You might like Mike Oldfield quite a bit, if you like 70's prog and acoustic guitar thingies. I'd recommend Ommadawn for starters, and then maybe Incantations. The most obvious choice is Tubular Bells, of course, but I'm not a very big fan of that album even though I am a fan of his.

Hi, you also might like Wishbone Ash - classic 70s sound, some nice acoustic but the real attraction is the twin lead guitar - there's not aggressive, just great stuff. Start with Argus if you don't already know em

My advice is to stay away for the moment from the 'Heavy' Prog-Rock bands. Means ELP, Yes, Van Der Graaf etc.. You are still very young, you will have the time to explore them later on. Try 'Argus' from Wishbone Ash, try 'Script for a jester's Tear' and 'Mısplaced Childhood' from Marillion, maybe '2112' from Rush, Jethro Tull (Aqualung, Benefit, Songs from the wood), and if you are in the mood for something different, I strongly recommed you 'Power & the Passion + Dawn' from Eloy. I discovered them when I was 17, and still are some of my most favorite albums. An interesting artist for fans of acoustic guitar is one-man band Matt Stevens. A literal one-man band, as everything you hear him play he can (and has) performed on stage, all by himself.
