Larks' Tongues In Aspic Boxset
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Mon., Aug 13, 2012

The long-awaited 40th anniversary edition of the legendary Larks’ Tongues In Aspic quintet  will be released on October 15th.

One of the key recordings in the King Crimson canon, and the only formal studio recording by the LTIA quintet, the 40th Anniversary Edition will be released in three separate editions to satisfy the merely curious and the expectant collector.

1. CD/DVD-A: CD: New stereo mix + selected audio extras – all new content.
DVD-A featuring 5.1 new surround mix, original & new stereo mixes in hi-res stereo, a full album of alt mixes by Steven Wilson & more than 30 minutes of unseen footage of the band live in the studio.

2. Limited edition Boxed Set:13CDs, 1DVD-A, 1Blu-Ray in 12” box with booklet & memorabilia. DVD-A content as above, Blu-Ray content as per DVD-A with further hi-res stereo material – all presented in DTS Master audio, 4CDs of studio content including CD of session reels featuring the first recorded takes of all pieces on the album, 1CD live in the studio, 8CDs of live audio restored bootlegs & soundboard recordings + 36 page booklet with an extensive new interview with Robert Fripp, notes by King Crimson biographer Sid Smith, album sleeve print, concert ticket replica (with code for further concert download) & band photo postcards – limited to initial orders, one pressing only to a worldwide maximum limit of 7,000 units.

3. 2CD: Complete original & new mixes with selected audio extras.
Whilst the clip of the quintet performing LTIA pt1 during the Bremen Beat Club recording has been available on the internet for several years in varying degrees of quality, there has been some fevered speculation as to whether the full concert would ever see the light of day.

Though it's been a long time coming, the full video of David Cross, Robert Fripp, John Wetton, Bill Bruford and Jamie Muir will now be seen in full. We hope all Crimheads agree that the waiting to get this in the best possible quality will have been worth while.

Pre-ordering details will appear soon.

Surely this is a bit... excessive?

Yikes I can't imagine what the pricetag on the 13 CD one will be! Wacko

Yes' In a Word 5-CD set was $70 some dollars so I wouldn't be surprised if this is somewhere in the $200s.

I can't help but feel that a 13 edition reissue of a single album is just too much. How much material can there be from the same band from the same album, it's studio sessions, and live material to fill up so many CD's? Now, if there was a full concert DVD from that era (and if the line-up included Muir, it would be much better) that would be more than enough for me, and I would rather they would release it separatley. However, as far as I understood, they won't even have a full concert on video, only one song.

I saw this band live (without Muir), the free-form jamming was remarkable!  David Cross playing dueling Mellotrons with Bob Fripp etc.   Peter Frampton was the warmup band!!  A good time was had by all!

Oh, I wish that concert was fully available on DVD, it sounds really great. Unfortunatley this is not among my favourite songs from them... but if only "Easy Money", "Exiles", "The Talking Drum / Larks part 2" were available in video, with just this line-up, it would be amazing. Don't know what else they could have been playing, I don't know if Starless was aready in their set-list so early, or if they were still playing something from the previous albums... perhaps Schizoid Mand at least?

Yeah, I remember them doing "Schizoid Man" in the encore at the Chicago show (Kinetic Playground, 1972, without Muir).  Wetton was just amazing!!

The band jammed a LOT as I recall, they were young, strong and very much into the band chemistry!!  This was a powerful ensemble.....I think that some marvelous sounds will be found in this collection.

The two "Midnight Special" performances used to be up on Youtube, I can't find them.  However, this is representative of the band I saw.... I was 18 years old back then, these guys were really just kids!!

2. Exiles
3. Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Part One

Certainly got me interested even though we all probably have the last track.

I'm trying to figure out the audio quality of the recordings out as well. $140 is a major investment! Here's what I know so far. I'll try to keep this updated. Anything quoted is what I was told by someone - as of now, it's from the user "jeffo" when I asked this question on Progressive Ears. Unfortunately he was the only one to respond to my question.

Any links to dgmlive.com lead to 30-second audio samples of each track. Of course, these samples are frequently in a section of the song of little interest.

CD 1&2: "Zoom Club (2 discs). B/B- quality audience recording. Vocals are kinda muffled, but that's okay since there are only a couple of vocal tracks, with very incomplete lyrics that Wetton clearly hasn't learned yet. Jamie is tough to pick out in the mix at times."

CD 4&5: Hull, Technical College. http://www.dgmlive.com/archive.htm?show=238" rel="nofollow - DGM gives it 3/5 stars for audio quality. "B quality audience. Better quality than Zoom."

CD6: Guildford Hall.

CD7: New Theater, Oxford. http://www.dgmlive.com/archive.htm?show=248" rel="nofollow - DGM gives it 3/5 stars for audio quality. "I seem to recall the quality of this one to be very [high] quality (the band's performance was top notch too)" http://www.dgmlive.com/archive.htm?show=248

CD8&9: Previously unreleased, so quality is unknown.

One member suggests that "if you have to ask about audio quality, you probably don't want it."

Ooh, this one's going to be good. Larks' is one of those albums that requires and demands excellent sound, due to all the musical congestion and little subtleties that must be heard, so I'm really looking forward to this one. The 30th Anniversary Edition sounds decent, but I feel that the album is definitely getting what it deserves with a package of this size.

I still find it odd to buy a boxset for only one album that contains just about as many CD's as if one were buying their complete discography. Plus paying just as much too. I would very much rather complete my KC discography than buy this. I believe they should just have released the remasters, plus perhaps some bonus tracks, and then release the best performance (or a 1 or 2 CD compilation of the best performances) as a separate live album. That's just about the same I thought about the Pink Floyd re-releases.

I wish I could justify spending $130 for this.  Lark's is my favorite KC album of them all, and my copy has been missing for years.  I just simply don't have that kind of money to spend, especially since I need to re-purchase everything from Lark's onward.  This sounds like a great box though, so my interest may yet get the better of my pocketbook.......

What's crazy is that I saw this video on MTV back in probably 1985 or so.  I had no idea what to make of it since I had never heard of King Crimson back then.  Needless to say, it didn't cause me to go out and look for their stuff (I was into Cheap Trick and the Scorpions back then, with Led Zeppelin being the closest thing to prog I liked) LOL

It does demonstrate just how far that channel has fallen over the years though...............

I agree.  Why do I need 15 different copies of the same 6 songs and live video footage of Robert Fripp brushing his teeth, along with a special replica of the toothbrush he used on the tour?  Of course, there's an extra improv on each disc, but still.  I'll save my $120 for the BOC box set which includes all their albums up through Imaginos plus some rarities.  I was also thinking this about Peter Gabriel's So, which is getting a similar treatment, except that his has CDs of him constructing the songs.  Do I really want to hear Peter Gabriel humming the first strains of the newborn Sledgehammer while taking a bath?  I think not.

I wonder if the release date was changed earlier by agreement, or the some stocks started distributing them to local vendors too early?
The gig on Zoom club was 13th Oct 1972, so I think the earlier distribution does not ruin the 40th anniversary celebration however.

I will get it. I'm a sucker for big music purchases. Quite simply, I can't put a price on great music. 100$? So be it. I'll get the remastered cd set.

I wonder if the release date was changed earlier by agreement, or the some stocks started distributing them to local vendors too early?

Smile Thank you Scott, I was sensing some sort of "pics or did not happen" effect, and had to proof the early purchase. Party
I also enjoyed the youtube viedo you sent, and have carefully unwrapped the box.
Beat Club video is inserting, giving visual presence to the KCCC CD. I also enjoy the aggressive Zoom club +40 min improvs, which I had already heard from evil bootleg (tm), now this crime solved by paying Fripp & the co. justifiyingly from their great work.

I say it's worth of the money if one is into this stuff, and I wonder will there be something similar out from the "Red" in 2014?

EDIT: watching the youtubefellow cut the box open in 00:22-00:25 made me think how many times he has cut to his hand earlier, if not learned (or being very lucky?)

^^ I spent 112$ on the GENESIS LIVE BOX SET 1973-2007 and I found it extreamly worth it except their was no 2007 live over Europe included which makes no sense at all, but I already have it; in fact I bought it the year it came out so no big there. Anyway, if that was 07 live album was included I'd give it a 5/5. On the other hand, THE LARKS TONGUE looks like a 6/5!!!!! That's an amazing set, so my point is its worth the money. :)

Yeah. Still, I think the Genesis box-sets (specially the live one) are really worth getting, because you're getting many albums in one box-set, plus rarities and so. However, with this Larks box-set, you're getting only one album, and for me it's too much money for just one album. I would sooner have bought the Pink Floyd ones, but in the end it was the same story, too much money for just one album, while there are so many other albums I haven't heard yet that I want to buy. I mean, I could get something between 5 and 15 new albums for the price of this box-set. Now, about the 2007 concert missing from the Genesis live box-set, I think I read that they reasoned that since that album had just been released, many people would already have it, so they just left it out of the box-set (even though they left the space so you can place the 2007 album that you "already" had in it). As a matter of fact, it was just the case with me, I had just bought the 2007 album when I learned about the box-sets, and I would have given it more thought about buying the box-set if I had already gotten an album from it (but in the end I guess I would have bought it anyway because of the extra album that you can't buy separatley).

hey man. Great point. It is just one album, but if you really love it you would get it. I personally don't adore it enough to buy it, so I'll probably pass. As for the Genesis Box set it is worth every penny for me. I think SECONDS OUT LIVE IN 5.1 is worth it on its own it's so good , but yeah I felt exactly like you did where by if I already had one of the albums in the box set would I buy it? Maybe buy them all seperately? It's possible. Anyway, it worked out perfectly and I'm glad it did so for not just me, but you as well. Enjoy my friend! Also, what's your favourite disc out of the 11? Mine is the SECONDS OUT in 5.1. Geez that's sounds bloody awesome !!

If the Crims bring out a RED box set I am in it. I like Larks Tongue but not sure if i want heaps of versions of it - tho this is a magnificent box set. they should pay that guy on youtube as he sold it to me easily.

I have a box set of the Crims they I adore here

and here

They are awesome boxsets with 4 discs in each and massive booklets compiling the history of the band. Both have live 2 live CDs that interested me and lots of snippets from their collection, there are previously unreleased things but its all good.

^ now that type of box set I'm more into cause it's not an over saturating the material on just one album. I really like King Crimson, but I don't love them. Still would consider the 21st century Guide 4 discer. Sounds great. Love Massive, big colorful books containing lots of reading material. Reminds me of IQ's 25th anniversary box set of the WAKE album. Great set as well. 4 disc with a 65 page booklet. Another one is JUDAS PRIEST''s METALOGY. Excellent sets.

I guess my favourite album on the set would be Live at the Rainbow. The 5.1 I guess, for it has more songs (though I'm afraid to say I haven't gotten an audio sistem to hear the 5.1 mix . Or else, I might consider both Live at the Rainbow and Genesis Live as one same double album, for they don't repeat songs. The thing is, I liked most of the songs better on this live versions because of the power of the playing (specially Collins drumming) and because I didn't find Gabriel as annoying. Though I really hate that Firth of Fifth doesn't have the piano intro, and the mid "funny" section of Supper's Ready was rather ruined (otherwise, I also like this version of Supper's Ready better).

I personally did not felt this box oversaturating the album, as the majority of contents are from live gigs containg much improvisations, not relating to the album compositions.
However I agree the question of "loving" this group or more specifically this line-up is essential when considering spending the money.
I didn't like so much the albums before 72-74 line-up, but spent my first decade of adulthood after military service listening intensively to these fellows and the 80's Levin/Belew productionline. Smile

You know, I think what I said may have been a bit unfair and unreasonable to say where I commented on the LARKS 40th box set being an overly saturated. I mean if someone really LOVES the LARKS album so much, then of course this box set is worth it. I also, for example, bought the 25th anniversary THE WAKE album as I mentioned above and that album box set had a ton of material of live recordings, studio vocal/instrumental outtakes and demos. I loved it all. I guess I'm being a bit hypocritical. Anyway, above all you should buy this box set if you LOVE the album, not just like it or your $$ goes down the toilet.

I would love to have a copy of SIGNALS in 5.1!!! If the sectors box set had 5.1 recordings for all albums that would be a dream come true. Unfortunately these rush sets might. It be worth it for me considering I have high quality digital copies of all the albums. Those booklets look great!! Geez. I'm torn!!

The thing is, I'm not too fond of improvs either. They may be interesting for listening once, or as back layer music, but not really much to enjoy. I think improvisations may be good as a means to composing music, or sometimes adding a different touch to an already existing song (which KC did often, actually).

Posted By: Eetu Pellonpaa
Date Posted: November 11 2012 at 04:45
^ Yeah, I understand that the improvs might not be most interesting for listening, though admit I got immersed to them personally quite strongly. "That feeling when you realize you like listening Providence more than Starless on Red's b-side" Wacko

If not charmed by the non-rational curls of musical interaction locks flowing on the aether, there would be left of finding out how the compositions were borne from some of these jam, how the composed songs developed, and which might have been best version. For most of the 72-74 compositions, I think the best live versions were on 73-74 era after Muir, allowing some nice variations to the arrangements and melting open blows as part of the written material, like you stated.
This kind of anecdotes however I believe would not justify the purchase of the 15 disc box.

I wonder if Snow Dog looking for the album data standards should be consulted, would any information of the 40th anniversary releases be mentioned in the archives album page?
Adding all material possibly would mess the page, but mentioning release codes in the album release information might be one solution?
