You should compare them not just as singers, but as musicians in general (which should include lyric writing too Wink).

Peter for me.

I think Jon Anderson doesn't have even the slightest chance here! LOL
Peter Gabriel for me as well...

I hope not. I'm not a Yes fan (I'm not a Genesis fan yet, I've yet to hear most of their discography, but I love what I've heard), but I hope Jon will get some votes.

Peter Gabriel, no contest at all. Jon Anderson can be pleasant, but he can't compete at all with Peter Gabriel in any important area.

First vote for Jon! I like his voice better, I like his songs better, and I like his fascination with spiritual themes. I have nver been a big Gabriel or Genesis fan.

I would have voted for Gabriel even if the poll had only pitted them as singers.  Once I consider Gabriel's solo career, it's not even close for me.  Gabriel.

Gabriel. I prefer his lyrics far more than Anderson's esoteric blandities, and Gabriel's body of work has been far more consistent over the years (and at times extraordinary).

While I love Anderson's voice, his lyrics throw me off.  I enjoy both immensely but much prefer Gabriel's work - both with Genesis and solo efforts.  The only thing I really liked by Anderson as a solo artist was Olias of Sunhillow.  Even his works with various other artists aren't as impressive.

Jon Anderson rocks, but Peter Gabriel

I have almost the whole Anderson's discography and just a couple of Gabriel's issues. As musician in general I should say Gabriel, but taking into account that Olias is totally written and performed by Jon I think he is a bit underrated as musician. Third vote for Jon

4th vote for Jon. Hey, we are more outspoken LOL
As much as I like Gabriel's lyrics for Genesis and his stage performance, I must say that I prefer Anderson's compository qualities and his groundbreaking creativity in the mid - seventies especially for Yes and solo.

PG by a wide margin. His solo albums have been much more consistently good.

I told you...  LOL
I'm not so long in this forums, but I have noticed that are some artists and/or bands here that are something like a Totem! (You know, the Indian's wooden statues that were representing their Gods)...
Eh, I think Peter Gabriel might be one of these Totems... Big smile
(The others I have noticed are for sure Genesis, VDGG, and King Crimson)...

Jon writes lyrics not by they make sense, but that they 'sound' good! So the obvious choice is Peter. Real unique voice on top of great imagery lyrics.

Peter Gabriel. I like Jon's singing at least equally, but I have a severe allergy to spiritual crap, so I discard him as a lyricist.
Both are archetypical prog vocalists.

Jon's singing is a lot better than Gabriel's, but in general, yes, Gabriel.

One vote for Jon's lyrical melodies and positive attitudes.

I really hate this polls between Gabriel and Anderson, because I really dislike Gabriel's singing; for me, it doesn't sound beautiful, and it seems to me he is not a good singer technically either (as, for example, James LaBrie, whom I might recognize that technically he is a great singer, but rather dislike his singing anyway). On the other side, Jon Anderson is one of the singers I enjoy the most, I find his voice really beautiful, and I believe technically he is among the better singers in rock too, something really unique. On the other hand, I don't really enjoy either's lyric writing, but I find Gabriel's weird "humor" rather unenjoyable, and sometimes gives something not to like from a song I actually like. On the other hand, even though the meaning of Anderson's lyrics may be somewhat... meaningless, I often find myself enjoying the way the words sound (just as Anderson is suposed to want to do). So, as I wrote in the beginning, I hate this Gabriel-Anderson polls, because of how much I like Anderson better than Gabriel, and Gabriel always beats Anderson by a wide margin... and that's somewhat frustrating.

^ Sorry to hear that. The opinion of the majority does not necessarily have to be taken into account seriously by any individual when it comes to music, ... but you probably already know that.

I think Jon's voice is more like a gentle, creamy voice of an old man. Gabriel sounds like a sheep with chainsaw overtones (well, maybe that's not a very accurate description anyway). On the other hand, Jon's lyrics just don't do jack. They are overly cryptic. Those of Peter ... well, Peter can convey a lot to the listener with his lyrics.

I would probably have to go with Peter, though. Sorry, Dell. I can put up with his voice. I can put up with Jon's lyrics, but they just don't do anything.

I don't think either Jon or LaBrie are technically GREAT.  Loads of singers can hit really high notes, especially in metal.  To me, no singer who does not utilize accent and dynamics well in his vocal portions is a great singer, just a good or very good one at the most.   THAT is something Gabriel is excellent with, in spite of his many limitations.

Peter Gabriel have more MTV awards which tilts it for me to vote in favour for him, Thumbs Up, so interesting music viedos, and forwardthinking music full of freshness and gravety, it pulls you to the music like a sponge atracting water

13 votes for Jon are not bad considering how much Genesis are rewarded on this site

PG, by a million miles, Jon is pleasent sometimes, Gabriel is pure genius. And not specialy his Genesis era, as much what he has done after, as a solo artist, and with Laurie, Fripp, The Call, Robbie Robertson, Artists united against apartheid, ect. Ect.

Certainly Jon. His spiritual aproach is kind of fascinating as for his lyrics and the musical direction of the band itself.

For the voice, Peter for sure !
For the lyrics, I don't understand much the meaning of what both sing...
Maybe there are different meanings ...

I can understand you not understanding much of Jon's lyrics. He doesn't!!

However, Gabriel's lyrics, certainly in his solo output, has always been very direct and easily deciphered.

Voice, depends really. Jon Anderson's voice is absolutely perfect for Yes's spiritual, uplifting music. I couldn't imagine anyone else up there with such a distinctive, distinguishable voice that's so associated with Yes's sound and Prog Rock in general. I've always enjoyed Yes's lyrics more as well for the optimistic vibes, though sometimes it can be a bit out there. LOL As an artist, as a whole, Peter Gabriel is obviously much more prolific and acclaimed. Always rewriting himself and breaking conventions of modern pop music. My vote goes to Gabriel.

Both have voices that annoy me no end these days. Both write rather obscure lyrics.
But when it comes to melodies, Genesis is the winner. Although, that may not be due to Gabriel's abilities, probably more Banks/Rutherford, don't know actually.
Can't vote.
