| Fanbloodytastic. I downloaded a show of them and they do a medley of classic prog tunes, one of them's a Yes one but I can't remember the others. |

Got into them while I was living in Japan, amazing stuff. Yoshida Tatsuya is pretty much solely responsible for the existence of a very healthy Zeuhl/fusion scene over there, while somehow manages to find the time to play in most of the bands, to say nothing of drumming for Sammla Mammas Manna, collaborating with visiting western musos, working as a jazz musician and being a pretty good photographer to boot! The prog rock medley is a hoot, they also do hard rock and classical medleys (you can find all 3 on the Japanese version of the excellent Pallaschtom CD, not sure if they're on any other versions.) ------------- 'Like so many of you I've got my doubts about how much to contribute to the already rich among us...' Have you heard any Koenjihyakkei? Another of Yoshida's many bands - much more overtly zeuhl than Ruins is. Three albums, but unfortunately only the latest Nivraym is still in print, I think. However, there's a new one coming out in October!! Did anyone catch Yoshida on his very recent US tour? (I missed the Baltimore show on Monday  ) He was playing as Ruins but with guest bassists from each city he visited...------------- http://www.progreviews.com/">

They are really crazy. Superb band. I think that Happy Family( another Zeuhl band from Japan) can be equally good. I've pretty liked Guapo's 'Five Suns', a kind of Crimson\Magma hybrid. |

I only know Koenjihyakkei from Nivram - the problem with a lot of Yoshida's work is that it seems to go out of print almost immediately. Fine stuff, Symphonica is kind of a meeting point between the two projects. I haven't seen Ruins live, though I saw the ad requesting bassists on the Magaibutsu site. Does this mean that Hisaki has left? It would be a shame if he and Yoshida didn't make at least one more album together, the interplay between those two is almost unnatural. Incidentally, I had GAS bookmarked a couple of years before getting involved with this site - that was how I discovered Guapo and where I first read about Ruins. ------------- 'Like so many of you I've got my doubts about how much to contribute to the already rich among us...' I think Eskaton is just as good as Magma, dare i say even better perhaps. Koenjihyakkei and Ruins are great though. |

According to the website for Skin Graft Records (who are issuing the new Koenjihyakkei album, Angherr Shisspa, in October), Hisashi did leave, so it looks like Yoshida's in need of a bassist for Ruins.

You know, I never really got much into Eskaton. I have 4 Visions and Ardeur and neither of them really grab me the way Magma does. I'm not really sure why - I guess I should give them another shot sometime. Other zeuhl bands of note: Weidorje Zao (though I've only heard Z=7L and don't like it that much) Universal Totem Orchestra The Flying Luttenbachers (only Infection and Decline is zeuhlish, but that album has a monstrously awesome cover of "De Futura"!!)
That makes sense, they're pretty different. Guapo likes to hammer on the repetition in a way that Yoshida has never really tried to do - he's much more spastic I'm kind of the opposite - I love Guapo, but I can only take most of Yoshida's projects, Ruins and Koenjihyakkei included, in relatively small doses. The one exception is his work with Satoko Fujii (in duo form and with the Satoko Fujii Quartet), but that's a totally different beast, much more avant-jazz than it is rock.------------- http://www.progreviews.com/">

Progreviews - you might like to try Guapo offshoot Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses (assuming you haven't already heard them, of course). They recently released their debut album. Their bassist has also replaced Matt Smith in Guapo (an amicable split - he may well return in the future).
