As a fond follower of the drone pioneers Earth, I was ecstatic to see them featured in the Archives! However, browsing around the forums here... I don't see too much love for them. I personally enjoy Earth's recent material (The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull, Angels of Darkness/Demons of Light I & II). So any Earth fans out here?

I consider drone metal to be progressive...

I have only AoDDoL1&2.  They are both good, if perhaps too repetitive.  I like 2 better than 1 if only because it's a little more "trim", you might say.
What do their earlier albums sound like compared to these?

Their stuff from the 1990s is a lot more electric. Pentastar: In the Style of Demons (1996) was more distorted, and had a very metallic feel to it, save for one track that consists of two piano chords (Sonar and Depth Charge, I believe). Earth 2 (1992) is definitely their heaviest, and really inspired the "wall of sound" drone music is known for. Hex; or Printing in the Infernal Method was released ten years after Pentastar. That album was the new sound that Earth is currently using on AoDDoL.

I thought this was gonna be about the pre-Sabbath band.   Carry on.

This Earth did take their name from the pre-Sabbath band, so...

I have The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull...not bad but a little too samey throughout. The drumming in particulat is underwhelming. But the opening two songs are great.

Well, this type of music IS called drone... so I'd expect to be a little samey LOL Anyways. TBMHITLS is definitely my favorite Earth record, and it ranks in the top 100 for experimental/post-metal here in the Archives. To be fully honest, I really do enjoy the title track the most.

I once played "Earth 2" while lying in bed with a high fever caused by chickenpox and heard all sorts of weird sounds but it never sounded quite the same afterwards so I sold it in the end.

I'd listen to Earth 2: Special Low Frequency Version, and The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull. They are both VERY VERY different, but both show how different and varied drone music can be.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just listened to "The Bees" and found it quite mellow and atmospheric compared to the ambient metal of "Earth 2". Repetitive loops can be very hypnotic.
