A good poll is when it's hard to pick, this is one of those cases. The End and When The Music's Over are both classic epics. L.A Woman is fantastic and has such a driving energy. Riders on the Storm is essential and one of the band's best songs. I'll have to sleep on it for now. |

I would have gone with "The Celebration of the Lizard" had it been included (more of a suite of song poems than an epic, and they didn't record it for a studio album as they had wanted to, so I wouldn't expect it) But I voted for The Soft Parade. | I just watched When You're Strange, a documentary about them. It's excellent but depressing as hell. It shows The Doors, especially Morrison, as vulnerable and "caught between heaven and hell" (William Blake reference), not just as the arena rock stars most people remember them as. |

Love the electric piano and jazzy drumming on "Riders"....was never a big Doors fan but that break and restart slays me. On a related note, how about Sweet Smoke incorporating "Soft Parade" on their first album....great stuff. ------------- I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there..... |

I'm surprised there's so little love for The Soft Parade. It's probably the most experimental track The Doors ever recorded - easy vote there. Jimbo's lyrics on that one are amazing.

I don't find Soft Parade that experimental but rather under developed. I think the band self destructed around the time they made Waiting For The Sun. They wrote good songs after Strange Days but their subsequent albums never reached the same heights as their first two albums.

Going for the underdog here. I've always loved The Soft Parade, and especially the live version of it they did, one night after a night spent in the whiskey parlour down the road from the studio, - that one is downright genius. It's included in the box set with live and studio rarities. YouTube's got the whole thang with eyes on as well. Love this one, and for once Jim's voice doesn't hurt from the fact that he's karate-drunk and ready to dive into the nearest hedge screaming non-sensical things: ------------- “The Guide says there is an art to flying or rather a knack. HI, It is really sad, that this band is not given more credit as a bonafide major progressive band ... they almost were, by themselves, the type that was copied that made sense of the long cuts, and unlike many people that depended on repetition and duplication of a theme, the veritable sonata format, and create some exciting stuff that is still fresh sounding today and makes many "progressive" bands look, and sound, like the amateur bands and players that they really are. ------------- Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! I was once hanging out at the Fatburger on the Strip in Las Vegas with some friends after a Grateful Dead concert at the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl. We were all coming down from all kinds of substances and I got up to throw some money in the jukebox. One of the albums in their jukebox was the first Doors album. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed this super straight looking midwest type family - father, mother, son, and daughter - sitting down to eat.. I couldn't help myself. I had to do it. I selected The End just so I could watch them squirm. And squirm they did! I choose The End!  Also, the Doors got banned from the Whiskey A Go Go for performing The End! I've read that after being fired "forever" the Doors played at the Whisky. Some confirmations: May 16-21, 1967 The Doors, The Byrds Two of the most famous bands to graduate from the Whisky herald the return of rock to the club. According to Chris Hjort’s chronology, due to an illness to Jim McGuinn, the Byrds do not play on the first night (May 16), and possibly not the next night either. Yes, I agree and always felt they were a very progressive band from the get-go. I also believe the combination of Ray Manzerak's organ/keyboard style against Robbie Krieger's subtle, soft lead guitar were a big influence on many bands later on and certainly progressive rock bands. I dare say I might even have heard some Doors influence on the Banks/Hackett combination in Genesis. The haunting Riders On The Storm is my choice. Morrison's ever esoteric/cryptic lyrics once again at his best on this track. ------------- - Music is Life, that's why our hearts have beats - |
