Assume reasonable prices throughout. No $25 pints of some insane stout, and no $300 bottles of whisky.

Also, "Everything but gin" is a valid (the most valid, in fact) answer.

Aww shame. I suppose it could be rice wine, but to be honest the only sake I've had was Gekkeikan sake and it almost burned my throat off. :(

Gonna go with ale/porter/etc, honourable mention to stouts and IPAs (though I resent them being lumped with wheat beer), as well as every kind of whisky.  And dark rum.  And absinthe.

Vodka for me. My favorite drink many years now.
After that, wine or beer. But vodka gets my vote. Smile

I have heard white wine described as dry  or sweet  but not red wine. I love red wine but neither dry nor sweet. It isn't in the description on the bottle. So  lets say I probably prefer a soft  fruity wine. Merlot possibly but not averse to a cabernet

Your categorizations of beer are rather insufficient. I prefer German pilsner, and I guess "ale, porter etc." comes closest to that.

I agree.  I love wheat beers but I'm not crazy about IPAs.  And I'm not sure what "etc." means.

(Personally, I think "beer" should have just been a single choice, and that's what I would have voted).

What category does Busch Light fall under?

I haven't. I'm a big lover of beer, and I like trying out different kinds of beer, but I do it all too seldom, for some reason. Will try out Lervig the next time I get the chance.

Really good vodka does have a distinct flavor, it's just that I have never cared for it. For me all vodka is just unfinished gin.

I could make a dozen categories for beer (probably 30 more like) but in my mind I approximate it as stout, ales, and lighter beers. Of course, there's the bitterness factor, and that skews things a bit.

I have certainly had some sweet red wines. Certainly not as sweet as Moscato or Reisling, but not overly dry. Perhaps they were blends.

Where does lager, the most common beer of all, fit in?

Eh, probably under the vague"lighter" beers. I'm not too picky with categorizing beers.

I think the categorisation for beers is fine, except I'd put IPA's in with ales. At least you did split beers into categories.

Personally, I'm a real ale drinker; current favorites:

I am a real ale drinker, (draft not keg or bottle) those that fall under the category of "bitter" are the ones I prefer - porters and stouts are not my thing - but thery're not as bad as the p-awful larger and other such fizzy pops.
But the drink I drink the most now is Gin - and that is generally Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray with a splash of tonic (unless I'm out then I'll take cheap Gordons with a whole bottle of tonic)

Dry red wine would be my favourite, but I also like some beers (preferrably stronger ones, 6.5% and up, or old Gueuze and some Kriek). Whisky (single malt or blended), Cognac, Gin and Vodka are fine as well.

Cheers Beer!

A proper Englishman's answer. I like British beers a lot, particularly ESBs and agree with you about lager. I'm glad to find such common ground, even though my preferred gin's are not the same as yours (I think Bombay Sapphire is only popular because of the blue bottle and media hype,) preferring Beefeater and Broker's myself. I also love stouts and porters (and find it odd they are not grouped together in this poll.)

Sapphire is probably over-hyped now but I first drank it about 25 years ago when it was far from popular. That's when I discovered that less tonic is better.

Stouts & porters are fine in moderation and great in winter, but I find them too filling to drink during "a session".

I will drink bottled ale (at a push), and those from this brewer are rather fine ( http://www.triplefff.com/beers.html" rel="nofollow - Tripple fff ) - (their ales have classic rock & prog rock names, which is nice)

In the States, red wine is usually either described as fruity (shiraz, merlot) or dry (cabernet). I have had some fruity reds that were very sweet, but they usually do not advertise this on the bottle.

After watching some of the debate, I felt I needed to chime in on this thread.  Being mostly a red wine drinker, I prefer Pinot Noir but do enjoy the other reds as well, espicially from the South of France and Italy.  I have noticed in some of the stores (US), that a few bottles are beginning to put "sweet" into the label, not many though.

Here in the Carolinas, there is a native grape, Muscadine, which has a rough and tough skin but the meat of the grape is very sweet.  There are many Muscadine wineries here, as it has sort of replaced the cotton fields, and they produce a sweet wine, but still has the bite of some of the dry ones (usually around 12% alcohol).  The most well known around here is Duplin Winery.

My vote is for dry red since that is closest category for my choice.

As a rule I don't drink, because of acid reflux and the fact the alcohol tastes like sh*t, but on the rare occassion I have something it's schnapps.  Cinnamon and mints are about the only flavors not completely ruined by alcohol.
