I've been getting into Marillion lately. I'm a big fan of Hogarth's vocals - but not so much of the Fish-era. I've been planning to get the 2CD version of Marbles and their latest - Sounds That Can't Be Made. What do you think?

I think those two are very good choices. The 2CD version of Marbles has quite a bit of filler, IMO, but also some amazing tracks not on the regular version.

I'm very fond of Anoraknophobia myself.

And of course Brave is almost mandatory if you like H-era Marillion.

Yep, if you're after the Hogarth-led Marillion stuff, you can't go wrong with `Marbles' - `The Invisble Man' and `Angelica' on it are worth it alone!

Kotro is right, too, `Anoraknophobia' is pretty damn good too, `Quartz', `When I Met God', etc, lots of great tracks on that one!

Happy hunting!

Yeah - I'd like to get the 2CD Deluxe Digibook thingy of Marbles, just because I'm a fan of having deluxe editions and nice packages.

I downloaded the "Crash Course CD" that the band offers for free on their website, and I'm very fond of tracks like "Hard As Love", "Neverland", "Estonia", "Afraid of Sunlight" and "Interior Lulu".

Can't help you then.  Get all Fish-era Marillion - from the EP "Grendel" to "Clutching at Straws."  Then, get Marillion.com, just because "Interior Lulu" is one of the best Fish-wanna-be songs under Hogarth-led Marillion...

^But he started out saying that he didn't like Fish eraConfused

If I come to you and say that I don't particularly like chocolate and fish, but would like some recommendations to go with my chocolate, would you still recommend me fish?

All the Fish era albums are a must. For Hogarth I'd recommend Seasons End, Brave, and Afraid of Sunlight.

Brave and Marbles are essential. Afraid of Sunlight, This Strange Engine, and Radiation almost so, and the new album is a stunner.

Get those and follow on from there, and also join us on the Marillion Round Table in the Appreciation section.

Seasons End and the latest. Not a fan of Brave at all.

Also the Hogarth/ Barbieri side project Not The Weapon But The Hand is bit underappreciated imo.

'Season's End' is worth it for 'Hooks In You' alone
and 'Brave' is essential........on double grooved vinyl!!!

THE FISH era is essential. All albums are great, so basically their first 4 albums is a must.

Hogarth era. Not as good; in fact not even close, but their are 3 good albums you could get once you are done with the fish era. MARBLES BRAVE and SEASONS END are excellent editions to any prog rock collection.

I'd probably avoid all of them. I haven't been impressed at all by any song I've heard. Alot of it sounds like bad mid 80s hair music with bad drums

I enjoy both eras, but since you want h-era only, I'll tell you my favorites.

This Strange Engine is a masterpiece imo.  Following that, Marbles is a very good choice, and I would also add Afraid of Sunlight and Season's End.  While Brave is highly rated, it's never been a favorite of mine.  And stay away from Radiation.  LOL

Ah dont worry - its cos I copied each album from the PA site and you cant recopy material back that has been encoded or all the codes will show up. Pretty complicated programming though.

Anyhoo... i am going to listen to some Marillion I aint heard before

Think I will go for Anoraknophobia or Radiation on Spotify

^ well I hope that will be enjoyable for you. Do you appreciate the Hogarth era more? Just curious. Anyway, I'm gonna grab a tea and have a SAVIOUR MACHINE moment. Legend pt2 for this morning will kick off the day well for me. Lol. Then, cause of this awesome thread, I will listen to MISPLACED CHILDHOOD when I get home. Blasting that album is always very satisfying. ;)

Clutching at Straws (1987).  Sorry, that's a Fish album, not Hogarth.  Listening to it just now made me want to change my PR avatar again...

Great idea!  Will do that after Clutching at Straws is over (just 5 minutes from now...)

I put on FUGAZI last night and that album I feel really typlifies Marillions sound of the Fish era. A terrific album indeed and a great album to start with. INCUBIS is my favourite track on that album. Classic Marillion!!!

Hi,

I just got FUGAZI, and I have to admit it was not as nice and hit me as well as the 1st album!

In my opinion, Misplaced Childhood and Clutching At Straws showed the band at their best and most progressive. Of the Hogarth years, I like, and still enjoy, Brave and Season's End.

I loved both Script and Misplaced Childhood, but what I've heard from Fugazi, which are only songs from a couple of live albums (but I believe I must have heard over half the songs), I wouldn't like that album nearly as much as the other 2. The only song I have liked from that album is the title one.

You don't like Clutching At Straws? Their pinnacle, IMHO.

Has been said already but to hammer it : Not the weapon but the hand is a very good record if you (like me) are a fan of H's voice.

I'd just say for now stay away from Somewhere Else

Happiness is the Road is (to me) a masterpiece of atmosphere and while it's not the best Marillion record, it hits grace pretty often (especially the first record). It is often overlooked given the other Marillion+H gems but definitely worth some time !

Has got to be Marbles for me. I can't see them ever making an album as good as this again.

You can't go wrong with Brave, Afraid of Sunlight, This Strange Engine, Anoraknophobia, Marbles, or Sounds That Can't Be Made. But, honestly, Seasons End, marillion.com, and Somewhere Else contain some amazing music. The title track alone on Somewhere Else is quintessential Marillion IMHO.

I think the LIVE AT LORELY in 1987 was pretty good. Its still available on Amazon for quite cheap, but Canada Amazon only. Maybe give that a watch?

In terms of live albums (rather than live DVDs):

For Fish-era live stuff:
- Live at Loreley is an excellent Clutching at Straws-era show; Recital of the Script is from the Script For a Jester's Tear era. If you like those albums they're great companions to the studio albums in question. They're the first I'd recommend for sure.

- Early Stages, if you can acquire it, is an *incredible* boxed set of Fish-era shows from before the band's studio career even began to the end of the Fish era. Its original selling price was very reasonable too.

- Other live stuff from Fish period: The Thieving Magpie is decent but the flow for the most part isn't what it could be because it's compiled from a bunch of different shows. Still, it's got a complete performance of Misplaced Childhood, so if you really dig that album it's worth getting for that. Curtain Call is a boxed set similar to Early Stages but with rougher recordings. Real to Real is a decent live release from the Fugazi era but is another one cobbled together from different shows so again, it doesn't flow as nicely as Live From Loreley or Recital.

H-era:

- Holy, there's so much to choose from. The gang have put out a truly nutty amount of live material from this era. The most interesting ones tend to be those from the Marillion weekends because they tend to give those concerts special themes, but there's so many they've put out from those that it's hard to pick.

- I have to give props to Live From Cadogan Hall though, it's an all-acoustic set so it's sort of a live and greatly expanded take on Less Is More, except I think it's easily superior to that album; the intimacy of the live setting lends a warmth to the acoustic adaptations that the studio takes didn't quite capture.

[QUOTE=lazland]Brave and Marbles are essential. Afraid of Sunlight, This Strange Engine, and Radiation almost so, and the new album is a stunner.Get those and follow on from there, and also join us on the Marillion Round Table in the Appreciation section.

Ditto. The man said it all.

I think you should give another listen to Fish-era Marillion....They were really the only classic progrock band doing much of anything in the early 80s that was popular. So, for the historical context alone -- worth checking out.

I think Misplaced Childhood was their most "mature" effort as far as songwriting....but the first one "Script for a Jester's Tear"  has a lot of really good material.

Here would be my top 5(6) choices:

1. Clutching At Straws
2. Marbles
3. Script for a Jester's Tear
4. This Strange Engine
5. Afraid of Sunlight or Seasons End

Don't think you can really go wrong with any of these albums and it gives you the best of both versions of the band.

Brave is to me the Hogarth masterpiece, Script is the Fish masterpiece. Seasons End has lots of good moments, Childhood as well if you like a poppier approach.

I think Sounds is quite beautiful for any h aficionado. Radiation is a worthy effort as well, an underrated rock record. This Strange engine was a bit disappointing to me.
