I'm thinking of buying one of the box sets of Weather Reports career and I'm curious to know which era, do you think, is better for exploring, being a first time listener of Weather Report -------------   MY IDOLS |

What do you normally listen to fusion wise? If you dig the more melodic stuff, largely built up around structures like Brand X, Jean Luc Ponty, Al di Meola and the likes - then you should probably go for the latter day box set. If you, like me, prefer your fusion to be up front in your face, wild and somewhat improvised like Miles, Hancock's Mwandishi period and the solo projects that came from this, then go for the early years. My favourites are 'Sweetnighter' and 'Mysterious Traveller' ... that makes it easy to choose option 1

I agree with this. Their earlier stuff is more of an ambient freestyle jazz fusion like bitches brew, and the later stuff became more structured and funky (when pastorius got on board, arguably one of the best bassists that ever lived). I wont choose a period for you, but this is pretty much how it differs. You being a drummer, I would be careful following top advice. Think twice. |

The first four albums are their best (IMO) and the ones most intriguing to prog fans. If you go for latter day stuff aim for live albums. ------------- Dig me...But don't...Bury me I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect. |

As much as I enjoy the playing of Jaco Pastorius, I prefer the earlier Weather Report before he joined the band. Jaco Pastorius is one of the most inspiring bassists for me, but Weather Report (besides a few tracks) got really boring once he joined.
