They may have a similar sound at times, but the compositions of Pawn Hearts are overall too dissonant and disorderly.  There's too much shrieking and howling.

The magnificent Godbluff, although Still Life and World Record (sadly maligned by many) aren't too far behind. I vastly prefer their 1975-1976 period to the other stuff.

I don't think they're that similar. Nothing on H to He gets as blatantly noisy and discordant as "Lemmings", and even that album's exercise in patchwork songwriting ("Pioneers over C") doesn't hold a candle to the structural mess that is "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers". "Man-Erg" could have been on H to He though, I give you that.

My point is: Even though the albums share obvious similarities, they're different enough that I can easily see somebody liking one and not the other. I too prefer H to He to Pawn Hearts for reasons I partially outlined above. And even if they were extremely similar, that still doesn't mean much. I like A Trick of the Trail a lot more than Wind & Wuthering, for example, because I happen to like most of the songs on the former and dislike most of the songs on the latter.

I would have voted Godbluff second, by the way.

Yeah, it's been a while for a VDGG album poll, hasn't it? I remember making one a while back, but that must have been more than a year ago now. Great to see another one up and running. Thumbs Up
My preference usually switches between Godbluff and Still Life. Every time I listen to the respected other my opinion changes, but then I'll put on the other one and it'll change again. LOL In the long run though, Godbluff has probably kept the most fire power, and most plays!

I'm going with Godbluff.  Reminds me the most of Hammill's solo stuff, which I generally prefer to VdGG.

I'm currently extremely into Pawn Hearts, I listen to the album at least once per day (listening to it right now actually... Lemmings just ended). Anyway, I'm going to save my vote for later as I really only have given H to He, Pawn Hearts and Godbluff decent chances, I have much yet to explore and it will take time. I guess this poll will be around for a while though :D

I am going to purchase their last three 70s albums soon.
And I already have in mind to listen to Pawn Hearts tomorrow; haven't done so in a while.

My favourite VdGG album has changed a lot over the years. Now it's Pawn Hearts. Could be Godbluff tomorrow for all I know, though.

That's a tough one. I think anything from The Aerosol Grey Machine to Godbluff is a worthy candidate. I'm not too fond of "Childlike Faith In Childhood's End" from Still Life, but the other tracks from that are great.

"Pawn Hearts", as it has the best Hugh Banton organ parts, though "The Least We Can Do..." comes in a close 2nd.  White Hammer is very moving, the subject matter is so sad and the distorted organ section at the end is so demonic.
