I'm interested in checking out Magma, as they seem to be an influence on my favourite band, Guapo.
I must confess I had always been put off by the vocal element, a made up language?  But I feel I'd like to investigate them more thoroughly. Which album or albums do you think it would be best to look into?

Thanks for any recommendations!

I'm a fanatical Magma fan and like Guapo a lot too, so I would recommend their double live "Live/Hhai" album.  The centerpiece is the 32 minute "Kohntarkosz", in my opinion their best piece.  It has plenty of vocals, but they're used mainly for establishing repeated melodic motifs, as well as harmonies, and not so much emphasis on the made up language.  The rest of the album is similar.  And in my opinion, the band always sounded best in a live setting.

Thanks! The live one I can find has 5 pieces on, none with that one though??? (Unless it is Kohntark?)

Yeah, he means this one

which is a good recommendation.  Kohntarkohz is probably their best composition for a Guapo fan, and this is possibly the best version of the piece

A much better attempt at chant, bass, drums and piano than MDK
A funky one. Although a bit more Blasquiz would have made it even better
 My fave live Magma
My very fave Magma album. Amazing sound and melodies

MDK is my favorite, with Kohntarkosz close behind. Live is a great suggestion. Kohntarkosz would probably be your best bet for a studio album.

I know three albums of Guapo : Great Sage, FiveSuns and Black Oni

Magma : I own all the 70s and some of their more recents albums.

My suggestions are :

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3315" rel="nofollow - Live/Hhaï (Köhntark)  and/or  http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3307" rel="nofollow - Köhntarkösz  = similar to FiveSuns because of the dark and intense progression

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=6928" rel="nofollow - Theusz Hamtaahk - Trilogie Au Trianon  = First section "TH" is a tad similar to Kohntarkosz, the two others are MDK and Wurdha Itah so 3 albums in one really well done and well recorded live album

- maybe some parts in  http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=25584" rel="nofollow - Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré  will also fit your taste

Some other Zeuhl bands and albums that could fit your tastes, the less jazzier more darker tension builders side of the Zeuhl music : Weidorje, Eskaton - 4Visions, Eider Stellaire - 1, Potemkin - Triton, Shub-Niggurath - Introduction, Jannick Top - Infernal Machina, Neom - Arkana Temporis, Xing Sa - Création de l'Univers, Setna - Cycle 1 ... some songs on Great Sage could sound similar to Bondage Fruits - I and II

Have a good time discovering that great band !!! and Zeuhl music

Don't understand the love for MDK. The second half is boring and repetitive. Not a great recording either. At least Wurdah Itah has variety and melody with the chants and piano

MDK and K.A. would both be good places to start.

It has the best recording and production of any of their early albums. Vocals at their best, horn parts, etc. For me, at least, the album doesn't need more variety. And if I remember correctly, Guapo's newest was pretty repetitive. Both good albums, despite or even because.

I bought my first Magma (MDK) just before Christmas. I've not listened to anything else since!

I personally recommend  the three cd set trilogy, not to be confused with the theusz hamtaahk trilogy or kohntarkosz trilogys it contains Live/hhai, udu wudu, and Attahk, three of their most acessible albums at under $30 it
s bargain considering how much magma albums can go for.
Udu Wudu contains de futura, which is a big influence on 5 suns era guapo.
This is probably no longer relevant, just my 2 cents.

Get the Theusz Hamtahk DVD. Worth the price.

For albums the Rheims live 1976 disk has the heaviest version of MDK. I got lucky when I caught Amazon having the songs on the album for $0.89. Album was $4, currently $65 on CD.

UPDATE:

Kroikey! Its still there.

It's been that way for a while.  The Amazon mp3 pricing strategy didn't really take bands like Magma into account, because a lot of their albums have only 2 or 3 tracks and they're not "album only" deals.  So I've filled in a few holes in my collection, things I hadn't gotten on CD yet, by buying mp3s there extremely cheap.

Considering Magma is hands down the most financially draining band in my collection (some CD's easily exceeding $1/minute of playtime) I am pretty comfortable being a beneficiary of this pricing.

This one:  http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3325" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3325

Best version of Kohntarkosz I've heard, plus that Theusz Hamtaahk is pretty epic.
