Quicksilver Messenger Service, Steve Miller Band, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Moby Grape, It's A Beautiful Day, Santana, Country Joe and the Fish... some of these are on PA while others aren't but they are all surely better known than Mad River. Mad River are described as a little-documented cult band: ''By the spring of 1969 bookings were harder to find than ever and the band was reduced to playing High School dances much of the time.''

According to the PA guidelines for Proto-Prog submissions:

''... the category is primarily intended for those artists who were pivotal in the formation of the Progressive Rock subgenre... if an artist is obscure and unknown it is unlikely that they are relevant to the formation of Progressive Rock.''

By all accounts this band was more innovative than many of its peers but was simply too little-known. Interesting suggestion but I can't see this getting approved.

The debut is a bit of a forgotten classic psych-rock album, not too far away from QMS's early sound...

A bit of a stretch for PA (unless QMS would be in >> and there are some good arguments for it), IMHO

the second is more of an insipid country rock thing, best forgotten...
