This is too hard. The top two are solid in their places, the rest pretty much move around, but Giant For a Day is bottom.

1. Free Hand
2. In a Glass House
3. Interview
4. Acquiring The Taste
5. The Missing Piece
6. The Power And The Glory
7. Civilian
8. Octopus
9. Gentle Giant
10. Three Friends
11. Giant For a Day

Oooh, some controversial placings there!

So I'm a huge Gentle Giant fan, and I find them very creative and talented. It's a shame that they broke up too early, because I like them so much. But at the time of their break-up, they created the opposite of what they used to compose, and the two last albums are very far from the six masterpieces and the two great albums they created.

Do yourself a favor and feast your ears on Interview and The Missing Piece my friend, they are well worth it and fit in with the rest of their classic period.  Giant For A Day you can easily do without, and Civilian, though poppier and more straight ahead rock than any other thing they released, remains a good album too.

I haven't heard all of the albums, but I have all their albums up to Octopus, plus Playing the Fool. By far the ones I liked the best are their first two, and Playing the fool I rather disliked a lot (except for "Strange Ways", from their first album). As for 3 friends and Octopus, they were rather good, but I don't enjoy then nearly as much as the first two ones. Given this experience, I don't expect I'll buy the rest of their albums, I don't think I'll get much enjoyment out of them.

I might try it, at least on Youtube (though that usually only gives me an idea of what to expect, but might not be enough). However, I'm not sure how likely is it that I might like it. As far as I remember, "Playing the Fool" has several pieces from Free Hand, and I didn't like any of them. Though I also found that I liked their sound less live than studio (except for "Strange Ways", which I found much better live).

Indeed I have gotten into them only recently (this year), though I have given a fair listen to most of the albums I bought. By now I'm loosing hope that I might aquire the taste for the sound of them that I didn't like. But indeed, I found some awsome music on the songs I actually liked (as I said, most of it from their first two albums). Still, I'll listen to them some more.

I can't stand the 1st three(before Kerry Minnear took over song arranging duties).   My top:

1.Free Hand
2.Power & The Glory
3.Octopus
4.Giant For A Day(its OK to have fun, people...everything doesn't have to be 20 minutes of disjointed & non-harmonic
thumpings & screaching vocals)

The above first three CDs are some of the best ever by any band and should be required prog, IMHO.Embarrassed

Free Hand is in my Top 5 recordings of all time.  What a masterpiece!

Giant for a Day just reminds me of the "sell-out" Captain Beefheart albums. I actually do sort of like them, but they tend to feel kinda sad when you compare them to their really brilliant albums.

Come on though, Rock Climber, you all love that song, deep down inside, don't you?

Please name the Gentle Giant song that is 20 minutes of disjointed and non-harmonic thumpings and screaching vocals?  I must have missed that one.  Confused

I really like Spookie Boogie off of Giant for a Day. There are a couple of other decent enough songs, including the aforementioned Rock Climber, but it doesn't come close to any of their first 8 albums.

Giant for a Day was startling in its mediocrity.... I had to check the cover to see if it was GG I was listening to. However my double CD pack came with The Missing Piece and that was quite enjoyable making up for GFAD. Rock Climber is perhaps the best thing on it, or the first track whatever that was - I thought it had a great riff and rocked nicely.

Just going with what I've heard so far.

1. Free Hand (5/5)
2. Acquiring the Taste (these first two are so close) (5/5)
3. Gentle Giant (4.5/5)
4. In a Glass House (4.5/5)
5. Three Friends (3/5)

Three Friends is nice throughout and I really quite like School Days, but overall I surprisingly didn't find it very interesting.

I didn't know it had that kind of reputation. I've always thought it was considered good, but not their very best. And well, that's my opinion of it, too.

It definitely has some high points - I think "Cogs In Cogs" is one of GG's best songs. "Proclamation" is also a stunning track but I really hate the way it ends, it builds up so well and then the change to double time + fade out are a bit anti-climactic.

"So Sincere" is also another good track. But the other songs are merely ok.

I have yet to listen to The Power and the Glory and Acquiring the Taste, but I would say that Octopus and In A Glass House are the best I've heard. Aside from "Peel the Paint", I would say Three Friends is my least favorite.

I've never been able to get into GG all that much though I respect what they were trying to do.

Anyway, I went through the first 8 albums again with this thread in mind and came up with this order.

Octopus
Power and the Glory
Three Friends
Acquiring the Taste
Gentle Giant
Free Hand
Glass House
Interview

Free Hand (5/5)
Acquiring the Taste (5/5)
Giant (4.5/5)
In a Glass House (4/5)
Three Friends (3/5)

-still judging The Power & the Glory and I haven't heard the rest.
I tried to keep it simple. It's sort of difficult doing these ratings without being like (4.3587/5).

For me, GG's best period was with this three album stretch:
The Power And The Glory
Free Hand
Interview
Topped off by the live album Playing The Fool which showed them at their best. That period represents for me the most mature and sophisticated period for them.

Just my top 5:

1. The Power And The Glory
2. Octopus
3. Three Friends
4. Gentle Giant
5. In A Glass House

I only own "The Power And The Glory", but it's one of my favourites now - nothing quite like it, and I love the obscurity! Smile

My top 3 would be:

In a Glass House
The Power and the Glory
Octopus

But really all of those 7 or so from the classic era have something good to offer
