Over the history of King Crimson, there have been 18 musicians and 2 lyricists considered "official" members of the band.  This poll is to determine the most highly regarded members of King Crimson in the PA community.  This is a multiple vote poll, so choose members you think made the most important contributions to the worldwide phenomenon we all know, love, and occasionally fear, the band called, "King Crimson".

Why so little love for Adrian Belew so far. Great guitarist, vocalist and lyricist and primarily responsible for their resurgence in the 80's and beyond.

You forgot "a knowledgeable experimenter/on-spot 'sound engineer' ". Check out this amazing instructional video featuring him:

I vote for him---overall like 80's KC more than 70's know I am in minority. That live 80's concert of them is amazing.

Just curious but am I the only one who finds Belew's vocals and guitar playing annoying at times...?

No...you're not the only one...though I can't say I ever find his guitar playing annoying, just his vocals.  I remember reading a KC review in the mid 80's and the reviewer hit it on the head for me.  He said AB was a poor man's David Byrne and that he tries too hard to be "weird".

Michael Giles; absolutely underrated and totally essential to that crucial band. No version after that was ever the same.

Michael Giles - a hugely musical drummer.  I can spend hours just concentrating on his playing, always finding some new facets and flourishes throughout.

Great point...after giving it some thought I had to add him as well.  Funny, I wonder how many of us voted for the entire original lineup?

I gave my votes to Fripp, Bruford, and Belew.  To me, they're the three members who have contributed the most to making King Crimson what it is/was.

Bruford's probably my favourite musician ever, so that's an easy vote for me. I just love his drum style, it's very inspiring.

What! No votes for Andy?!? Man I love his loose drumming on Lizard. So hard to duplicate, it's insane.

^ ... over Robert by seven votes, which is also interesting, ... which I can understand. I mean, people by now may be tired of voting for him.

Levin over Wetton by 14 ... hm ... . Ermm

Based on the votes received there are a couple of interesting facts:

1)  Bill Bruford received the most votes, even more than RF!  I think they would both find that amusing for very different reasons Wink

2)  Based on the 6 highest vote receivers, it seems that PA members would be happy if RF reunited a "double trio - three bassist" lineup consisting of:

RF - Guitar
Adrian Belew - Guitar/Vox
Greg Lake - Bass/Vox
Bill Bruford - Drums
Tony Levin - Bass/Stick
John Wetton - Bass/Vox

What do you think of this new "double trio"?

I think the line-up of Fripp, Wetton, Cross, & Bruford was the best. The live USA album is proof of that. Just my opinion, mind you.

Yeah, but Cross's violin parts on USA are overdubbed by one Jobson, who later played on UK with Wetton and Bruford. The version I have of that concert features the original parts by David Cross... though someone just mentioned on another thread that Jobson's overdubs are suposed to be somewhat better.

Well, Fripp easily gets my vote for being the man who has kept KC going throughout it's over 40 year history. Ian McDonald, Bill Bruford, Jamie Muir, Mel Collins, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto also receive honourable mentions
