With apologies for the belated nature of this announcement, Guigo (Atkingani) and Tony (Tony R) have stepped down as admins, and rejoined the ranks of special collaborators. Guigo has been a member of the site since 2005, and has been on the admin team for several years. His calm and friendly demeanour has resulted in him making many friends around the site. He was in many ways the perfect admin, resolving issues through negotiation rather than confrontation. I had the pleasure of meeting Guigo a few years ago with his lovely wife. I can assure you he is even nicer in real life! Tony joined the site as “Reed Lover”in the very early days of the site. Many of us recall his informed debating style, especially those epic debates with Maani, and how he later reinvented himself as Tony R. In my personal opinion, Tony has done more than anyone else to make the site what it is today. When tempers got frayed Tony was always on hand to step in and resolve matters, sometimes even resorting to telephone calls to other members of the site. Much of what Tony has done for the site has been transparent to the members, but please be assured, he has dedicated an incredible amount of time and effort and we are all the beneficiaries of his work. I am sure you will join me in wishing Guigo and Tony well, and thank them for their major contribution to Progarchives. I am pleased to say that both remain regular visitors and contributors to the site. On the other hand, Andy Webb joined the Admin team a few months ago, and has quickly established himself as a fine member of the team. Andy brings with him a youthful enthusiasm which bodes well for the future of the site. |

I hope Guigi and Tony enjoy their "retirement" as they've both earned it, two of the most important contributors to this site .

I'm a little burnt out and thought it was time to put an end to the "should I stay or should I go" torment by just demoting myself. I've heaps of exciting stuff on at work and an expanded role so I only really have the energy to "pratt about" on the Internet and being an Admin here was causing me problems as I got suspended from other forums  It's nice not to feel the obligation to log on here and hopefully I can return to just posting for fun at Progarchives. I don't think my Special Collaborator is appropriate really, I just clicked on that to exclude myself from the Admin Zone. I've met and "worked" alongside some wonderful people here, Admin, Collabs and members. It's nice that people like "The Doctor" bear no grudges and disappointing that some still do. I did what I had to do... I hope that this site continues to grow, and that decisions made are transparent and for the good of the site and the members, not just change for change's sake. Hopefully I will finally get to meet up with some here at some point, until then, see you around. |

He must make a better admin than a site monitor (what ever happened to that latter unfulfilled appointment?) I was an admin for circa 12 months and had no direct dealings with Guigo (Atkingani) so cannot comment further but he seemed like a perfectly fine and reasonable chap who clearly was pivotal in the present shape of the site By his own documented admission Tony R could be a 'pompous arse' but certainly was the closest thing we have here to the "last word' before you were perma-banned. Despite his life-long allegiance to the reviled Man Ure, I have a grudging and sneaking respect for this elevated troll. I'm just being honest, it's a two way street -------------

Update. Jody (TheProgologist) has also stepped down from the admin team. Jody has been a fine contributor to the site over many years, both through his specialist knowledge of Prog metal and his role as an admin. We thank Jody for all his work for the site. I'm delighted to say that Jody will also be sticking around.

I stopped sacrificing virgins to all the metal gods and it has been nothing but downhill form there. Seriously though,I came back to help but I am just too busy and it's not fair to someone who is motivated and can dedicate time to the site. Weird,I never thought my life would get more hectic when my kids got older.It's not supposed to be like this! Thanks guys -------------  |

I really don't understand what has happened with the site over the years. In the beginning it was fun and exciting. Now it is a political conflagration with too many admirals and not enough ordinary seamen. Everyone is a know-it-all. It's just a freaking music site for Christ sake not a military formation or a Forbes 100 company. I dunno. I guess the world is a different place every day when you wake up in the morning.

Case in point. The site has just gone to the dogs and nobody seems to care anymore. I've committed a lot of my time in the past writing reviews, updating biographies and contacting artists for information that otherwise would not be available. I just think it was a freaking waste. There are tenths or even hundreds of people committing a lot of time on this website. Maybe some of them feel they are wasting/have wasted their time, some not. Rather than expressing your concerns (which can be valid if you could really explain what you are talking about) how about suggesting what needs to be changed, if you care of course. If not, why bother making the statement at all? |

Your initial comment basically attacks the structure and intent of the site without offering any specifics as you complain about the rigid political 'military foundation' of the current management team. I figured that a comment showing that we don't all take ourselves as seriously as you imply was in order, in effect, I was attempting to show that 'fun' can still be had on the site. Your answer to that was effectively that I'm too flippant? I mean at this point, it seems that you're trying to start a flame war here. If I can make an honest suggestion here, if you really want to enact some kind of change, give specifics rather than a general rant. From your initial post, I can't tell what you're really angry about. I can attest that many of us do in fact care about the site. Many of us have committed time on reviews and contacting artists as well. Personally I've had artists give me excessive grief about the genre that they were assigned. A lot of us have and continue to put a lot of effort into the site. Trust me Ian, you've done a heck of a lot more reviews than I have, I don't want to take anything away from that, I just really don't understand why you think it was a waste. We're pretty much the premier prog site on the web, we have a huge amount of information available, new members arrive daily . . . You rant on Ian, it is your given right. I do believe there a lot of new /newer people putting heaps of effort into the site for Max's bank account and let's face it for our pleasure. One thing this site has mostly tolerated is the freedom to rant and come and go as we please. It is almost 10 years for me being a member here and and I welcome change with new faces. I was referring to the guy who misspelled the word " semen". My point is that this ranking system has just got out of control. It's confusing and misleading at the same time. Same goes for all the made up genres. I've had quite a few people have a look at the site over the years &monthsincluding musicians and a cousin who was involved in the music industry back in the seventies & eighties. He just said that it was a cheesy site. Not much else. Guys & gals it's just a music site not repairing the optics on the curiousity Mars lander from 62 million km away. I wish we could just get back to basics here. Right now I have to get back to my aeroplane! ------------- |

And frankly, the view from 5-stars isn't that great, and certainly is a long way from premier cru and caviar. Normally voluntary work has it's own reward, the self-recognition of a job well-done even if no one else notices (if you're looking for a pat on the back for every little thing you do around here then you've come to the wrong place). But speaking as an Admin, apart from handing out an extra star to someone who has yet to become cynical and jaded, there is no pleasure to be had in any of the tasks we undertake.
Sure this site is a cheesy little site, I for one would not want it any other way, and I certainly wouldn't work for free on a site that was more professional and less cheesy. That's what makes it a fan site (even if someone is profiting from the advertising revenue), that fact that all contributions are welcome, regardless of how well written they are.
Hell, I'd much rather read about what a fan thought of the music he was actually listening to than read some by-the-numbers review on a more polished site that is more interested in how smart the reviewer can present himself and his shallow opinion in prosaic cursive script than they are in the actual substance of the music. I've lost count of how many "professional" reviews I've read that look more like paid advertising copy, or worse still, barely mention the album at all in seveal paragraphs of text.
As you say, it's just a music site and I'll add that it is one where in the music the substance is more important than the style.
