Chicago VII without doubt although I like both the first two as well. Don't own anything else by them so quite interested to see how this poll goes.

Chicago II for me. Not sure people really get how different these guys were for 1970.

For me it's a toss-up between 2 and 3.  I'll give a slight edge to 3 for its more experimental tracks.  I enjoy most of what this group's put out.

I played "Devil's Sweet" from VII for a friend and he thought it was early Magma!
Interesting thought since the drummer wrote it.

Hi,

I voted 2, because both 1 and 2, are massively important for the time, the place, and its work.

I've often said that Chicago didn't make it to "Woodstock" because the folks that put it on didn't want bands that really meant it, and didn't have to flaunt it!

The 2nd one for me. It has two of my favourite Chicago tracks on it; 25 or 6 to 4 and Colour My World.

A GREAT YEAR FOR PROG!!!

I voted 2 on the strength of the composition, particularly the blazing vocals and guitar on "25 or 6 to 4"!!

Chicago was a band that was highly admired by the "jock" element at my high school, whereas I hung with the freaks & weirdos who were playing King Crimson covers in amateur bands in 1971.  It took me years to overcome my prejudices and listen to this band closely.

In fact, only two days ago I bought a "greatest hits" CD just to listen to while driving, I'm very impressed and plan on mining into their material further!

Many bands from those days didn't get the appreciation they deserved including Spirit, Blood/Sweat/Tears etc.  It's fun to dig around in the 1969-1972 era and see what we missed or don't listen to as much as we should.

CTA is the only one I own.  Definitely have to get 2 and 3, at least, some day.

The short answer is a definite yes.  They've been around a very long time so I don't know what you've heard buit if you like phenomenal guitar playing the late Terry Kath is a must.  Check this out (guitar solo stars around 4:25):

Then there's the killer solo on "25 or 6 to 4"

The early stuff (up through Chicago VII, in my opinion) is absolutely worth it - just such a fine collection of musicians.

I'm giving Chicago V the nod for now. That opening cut has a real prog vibe to it, and Saturday is just a great pop song..."Can you dig it? Yes I can". Good stuff.

God, I love Chicago.

I - III : Absolutely Essential
V - VII:  Extremely highly recommended
VIII - XI:  Good albums with great highlights
After XI:  Proceed with extreme caution.
13:  If you like disco...

I'm with you on that....as much as I like the first CTA one the second is better over all. The 3rd is very good also.
I was lucky enough to have seen these guys in early 1970 for $3.50 at college......they were excellent .
Cool

So do I. CTA, ll & lll are great compositional albums. But my overall favorite is Chicago V. Pete Cetera is one of Rock music's greatest vocalists! The gem track in Chicago V is "Good-Bye." One of their best songs.

How did I miss this poll ??
Definitely have to go with 'VII' - lots of variety and some complex fusion tracks really stand out for me. Some of the band's most creative and intricate playing is found on this album (IMHO).

Haven't listened to Vll in years......after 5 I stopped buying their lp's......I always felt they could never top the first 3.
I need to listen to 7 and see what I've missed all these years.

I bought that 10 CD box of the first 10 studio albums and it's amazing.

A loose ranking and rating of the ones I've heard:

8/10
V
VIII
CTA

7/10
VII (Used to be my favourite until recently. So close to an 8/10; just has about one too many skippers)
II
III

6/10
VI = XI

5/10
X = Hot Streets (These two still have their highlights)

Not heard all of their albums, but hard to believe any of their albums could get over their first, so that got my vote.

^Their first was the most bluesy rocky one...they smoothed down quite a bit in the later ones.
I think the first 7 are all good...no 4 being a live one At Carnegie Hall.

I haven't listened to these guys in a really long time, but I will, since I like their music before they went into cheesy pop in the 80s.

I liked their second album, but it wasn´t that good I really have got any interest to listen them more. My brother had that seventies compilation, used to listen that, but really remembered it nothing else than 25 or 6 to 4.

For me, still remains VII - it has EVERYTHING Chicago were reknowned for. And each and every member giving their all on their respective instruments (yes, even Pete Cetera ; he CAN play the bass quite exquisitely).
I think highly (some more than others of course) of the debut, up to, and including X. Their tenth was a turning point, but many of the songs here are tight and somewhat complex. From XI on, they all have some great tunes (as well as commercial claptrap). My favourite from this later period will always be 16. Great album.

From what I understand they put out some really horrible albums in the late seventies and early 80's.
